      so those of us who don't have that version, then what? Something in the upgrade of 3.1.4 fixes or automatically configures something right? If we knew what it did, could do manually in other versions I assume

      This is great to hear. I appear to be one step behind you new with my build and the CD was my next step. Are you using it with the Buddha and which IDE to SATA do you recommend or does it not make much difference?

    • @RMCRetro
      @RMCRetro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jakedeeboy I'm using it with the final adapter shown (with the two black capacitors on it) and the jumper set to slave. This is then on a two channel cable direct to the Vampire IDE port. In the longer term I might experiment with the Buddha as you can get more speed out of your CF or SD card if it's the only thing on the channel, but it's plenty fast enough for me as is for now.

    Around 1990 my father wanted to buy me my first computer so he could not decide what to do: Buy me a cheaper Amiga or to go the more expensive PC route. At the end the PC won but I always asked myself what it would happen if he bought me an Amiga instead 😀 And now after watching your videos I decided to build my first Amiga almost 30 years later! Great video series by the way.

    I had the same problem with IDE to Sata boards with my Amiga 2000, Buddha IDE and a SSD drive. I got it all to work using AmigaOS 3.1.4 (ROM + OS). You can also write the AmigaOS 3.1.4 ROM into the Vampire using tools available on their web-site. Use the A500 version of the "unsplit_unswapped" ROM available with your 3.1.4 licence from the Hyperion web-site. I would try that first to get the CD drive to work.

    What I did differantly is that my vampire is inside a real Amiga 600 case with real Amiga 600 motherboard/floppy/tank mouse/PCMCIA network card. Therefore anyone who sees it beleaves it's an amiga 600 in it cause that's what it is. A boring Amiga 600. The looser of the family.

    Neil, I'm really enjoying this series you've got going here! I never had any of the Amiga line of computers, but I did have a 68k Mac (a Mac II ci) that did use a similar chip as the Vampire FPGA board there tries and succeeds at simulating. Did I read the sysinfo output right? Was that running at over 100 MHz? Holy crap. The Mac II ci I had back in the day I think only ran at like 20-30 MHz at best, and the triple digits were reserved for the PowerPC machines released later on. I'm sure you'll show this working in Part 4, but I'm sort of not surprised that you're able to emulate an era Mac with the Vampire, since it's basically the same chipset as what the Amigas had at around the same time. I can't wait for part 4. Keep up the great work overall on everything you post as well!

    I have had issues with drives and drivers in my 500-desktop convertion. I have noticed that it will give issues, if I set the master slave drives attached on the wrong spot on the ribbon cable. And most of the times, I can not boot with the use of specific CF card dongles or DOM modules. I personally think it is a drive speed timing issue. I have seen it on 486 VLB class computers as well, back in 1995. If you can boot yet can not get it to work with IDE-Fix, then try the AmiCD driver. (I think it is named that on Aminet). As far as I remember, then it is version 1.15 that I am using.

  • @cromulence
    @cromulence 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding your CD drive issue, a couple of things:
    - Those adapters adapt to IDE, but do they adapt to PATA? Or is the Amiga even PATA compliant?
    - Instead of using an adapter, have you considered a used native 2.5" IDE/PATA DVD drive? They do exist, and aren't that expensive!

I was HUGE Amiga fan over many years back in the days, my last one was quite decent A1200 config in tower case with Blizzard IV card, multiple HDDs, genlock, sampler, ISDN modem with Internet, but that was looong time ago and I'm certainly not up to date with the latest stuff despite taking occasional look at Amiga news (when I'm bored). Ah, ISDN, and how the Baby Bells totally screwed it up over here in 'Murica. To think my Atari 1040STf was compatible with ISDN in 1986 - and was even a selectable option for configuring the RS232 port - but PacBell didn't even start getting serious with rolling out residential ISDN service until about 1998 when most of the industry was already promoting DSL and cable modem services as superior - and cheaper - successors arriving "shortly".

      I get your point but there's plenty of classic software and games that can make use of the performance and Neil did select the older firmware without the FPGA AGA chipset etc - so it's pretty much just a fast CPU. Make sure to join in all of the Atari ST groups on Facebook and over at AtariAge proper and then voice your support for Vampire options. Hardcore ST fans from old are starting to return to the platform as a hobby. More rabid Amigans never let go of their platform so a lot of these continuation projects are far more mature in Amigaland in comparison. A lot of the existing ST projects have to do with using faster ROM chips for TOS to work better with modern 68020 accelerator boards with TOS 2.06 - and TOS switcher ROM boards - for maximum compatibility, although a lot of software has been patched for better compatibility since the 90s. OS ROM switcher boards are also popular amongst C64 and Atari 8-bit enthusiasts.

    • @DukeDudeston
      @DukeDudeston 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry what?
      They solder them on to protect the chip and to keep it secure. And on most modern motherboards the only chip really soldered on is the chipset, and the board us designed with that chip only, replacing it with rev 2, might not work as the "traces" may not match up.
      The BIOS is mostly eeprom these days, and all other chips soldered on can be replaced with a PCI/PCIe card if you so wish.. so really dont understand the problem.
      Unless you mean laptops, but again thats to make sure things dont come loose when its being moved.

    • @DukeDudeston
