    "Carrie" is not only an effective horror film, it's a heartbreaking tragedy. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie are simply magnificent as plaintive, victimized daughter and violently disturbed mother. Hollywood should take note: In order to understand a film, we have to feel something towards the characters(sadness, anger, fear, respect, as examples), not just watch people read lines like they have nothing better to do.

    • @dancepiglover
      @dancepiglover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      And to really understand what led up to the ending. You can’t truly appreciate her tragedy from this review; one needs to watch the movie. I really love that “Carrie” shows the psychological aspects of the character, and with the way things went, it was almost inevitable that she would snap.

      @@dancepiglover Agreed, the deck was fatally stacked against her, and there was no help to be found. As a therapist, I think they did an excellent job portraying the torment abused and bullied teens experience in their daily lives, and how dangerous even parents can be.

      @AnInsideJoke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@dancepiglover The book goes even deeper (as well as hints about the psychic powers being genetic, and going hand-to-hand in madness), you really see all of her thoughts and the breakdown is even more brutal (and consists of her wrecking a significant portion of the town too, not just burning the school gym and killing her insane mother), it honestly legitimately made me ugly cry reading it.

      Generally I think that one of King's best abilities is his ability to channel childhood and teenage years extremely well, and one of the side effects of that is the ability to both channel some kids' innocence and some kids' maliciousness.

    15:18 I’m surprised you didn’t include the _xtremely creepy_ scene where Carrie first walks into the bathroom, turns on the light... and then you notice _her mom was standing behind the door the whole time!_
    15:55 _actually_ Snob, the statue in the closet is not Jesus but a saint who was murdered by Roman archers (hence the arrows). I think it is St. Sebastian (?).
    Also note how she orgasms at the pain.
    16:06 you can see glimpses of that original ending with the “rocks from heaven” crashing through the ceiling. I think the reason they ditched it is you couldn’t really _see_ what was happening, especially at night.
    16:36 fun story: when Steven King went to watch the film, he sat in the very back row. According to him, 2 of the biggest, baddest black dudes came in and sat in front of him. When the movie started with the shower room, they were laughing and King thought “how in the hell are these guys going to get scared?”
    ... _but_ ... as the movie went on, they got quieter and quieter. When the movie got to this part, both of those guys _jumped in the air screaming_ when Carrie’s arm grabbed Amy.
    And King sat behind them... smiling 😁

      Were I to have directed the remake, I should have determined to somehow follow the basic structure of the novel itself; perhaps something involving a list of entries in a search engine on the subject of her (with the title being her name typed onto the screen). If done capably, it could become not just a superior horror story but an excellent satire on the media as well. 🤔 🤨
