I have 2013 tahoe and everything works except the instrument panel backlighting at night time. It works during the day but off at night. Everything else works normally. Could this be an issue with the mosfet?
The cluster will still continue to count and keep track of miles while the display isn't working. The vehicle will still start and drive without the cluster, it just isn't street legal to do so.
Hey awesome video this one and all the rest you have are very informative. I was wondering if you have schematics for the boards on gm instrument clusters? I can't find them anywhere or do you just look at a working board and trace things down that way. Also I could hook up my scanner to the 03-06 clusters and get it to do a gauge sweep but it won't work on the 07 and up it just says no communication. I tied into pin 6 the low speed gmlan serial data line to the scanner. I would even paypal you some $ for you time and info. Thanks
The 07-14 use pin 1 on the OBD port for communication, the 03-06 are not the same. GM has not released or leaked schematics for clusters that I have found. I have reversed engineered enough of the 03-04 and 05's to get what I need most of the time. I have my own sketches. Fun to do when some of the chips and components are propitiatory.
What Temp do you set your hot air? I want to run hot air over my whole board to re-solder everything... Every Time I use hot air I'm nervous I'm going to damage something...
I normally start around 350ºc and go up from there if the parts are larger or heat sunk. Reflowing the entire board should be a last ditch effort out of desperation.
ok yeah that exactly where I started 350 with low air. I added solider where it was large enough for me to do so...but did not on any of the IC's. ohh my unit is out of a 2003 Chevy Tahoe btw. I seem to have fixed most of the problems except I will lose complete power and have to bang on the dash to get it back. still not sure what that is...
Thanks i appreciate it. How much do you charge? I think i may have accidentally fixed my issues, so far everything's working fine now. But if i had to do it again, I send it out!
If you don't have the equipment to bench test, you need to mark the home location before removing the needles. It's my experience the plug connector doesn't fail under normal conditions.
I'd start with confirming what the voltage is actually doing with a voltage meter before replacing anything else. Run a gauge sweep test, might need a scan tool.

jeffescortlx Thanks for the quick response. Since I had nothing to loose I took my dash apart to get to the cluster. I pulled the cluster out so I could get to the wire harness. I turned the ignition on and no function to the gauges and nothing to the panels. I carefully disconnected the wire harness and then plugged it back in. I made an effort to not move anything but the harness. I turned the ignition on and it powered up. Everything functioning correctly. I then tapped, banged and even moved the the wire harness around and could not make it fail. I assume oxidation? Is there any other explanation for it to work after unplugging and plugging back in?
