Any idea why the mosfet fails? It does bother me if that's all that was changed unless the replacement has better specs that addresses the failure. Perhaps whatever is supposed to suppress kickback from the transformer has gone bad.
The easy assumption is that the engineers under spec'd the part. But I've noticed a pattern with terrible solder joints. If you look closely the MOSFET heat sink tab solder joint it fractured and comes right off the board.
@@jeffescortlx Which raises the question if the solder joint is the cause it or is the solder joint the result of the mosfet overheating. Really enjoy your videos and I might have to see about sending a cluster out of my 2001 silverado to you sometime. For some reason it will be working fine then will suddenly go back into power up like it does when you first cycle the key on. I suspect probably a broken solder joint just from learning from your videos. Two questions, is there any way that you could do a video on how the displays work on the GM products? I think it would be a neat thing to find out how they work, and could you recommend to me a good blue LED replacement for my dash backlighting? After seeing this backlighting I might like to do a blue backlighting on my truck as well. I understand that on the 01 truck that the backlighting is just plug and play but I would really like to have your opinion on which LED upgrade bulb to use.
I'm trying to power up a cluster out if the truck, to check mileage. What wires do I need for ground a what wires do I add power to? I have the original plug cut out of the truck.
I was wondering if it’s possible to change the digital displays on the bottom , I was wanting to go to purple I saw another comment where you said to get one that has the color you want already built in, but all my research just leads to the background overlays not the digital part with different colors any idea how to find them online?
You have to use color transparency film. Some aftermarket faces have the color transparency film built in. For example since the display is green, and let's say you wanted to make it white, you have to use a red color transparency to make it look white.
this seems pretty common with several makes and models. I repaired many but never really had time to trace down what was causing them to fail so often. I repaired some that were only 15-18 months old, but had over 100k miles so it wasnt covered under warranty. i do like the VFD displays tho.
My Cadillac Escalade ESV, after a full battery drain and a jump, now has no backlight whatsoever in cluster panel. Instead the four needles are constantly flashing blue, on and off at 1/sec rate! Some one told me to remove fuse 46, run the engine and put it back. It worked and I got my cluster backlight. But unfortunately, one a subsequent battery drainage, I Have the same problem and that procedure does not work anymore. Do you know what has happened and Do you think there is anything blown on the motherboard or still a relay or fuse or bad connection or an unsync cycle? PLEASE Help if you can.
@Jeff awhile back I commented in a video and asked about what kind of LED bulbs you used for the 04 Chevy Tahoe Dash Cluster assemblies. You replied but I forgot to write it down but the history in TH-cam won't let me go back that far. Also if you have the manual control knobs for the dial climate which were manual what bulbs can one use for those or would the same one work? Also where do you get the servo motors or stepper motors as I believe their called? Thanks for the great Vids and good narration. If you have time sometime maybe if you could create a smaller length video describing your procedures doing your soldering, equipment, parts used and why (quality/etc) vs other brands. Also some of the tools you use such as the solder sucker and the good types ajd types to stay away from. Keep up the great Vids!
I order my stepper motors from a supplier located in Shen Zhen. But if you only need enough to do one cluster they wouldn't work for you as they deal in large quantities by the rack. Most of my videos list my tools in the video description. But not this video, because this video is for a different cluster generation.
@@jeffescortlx Hey, Jeff thanks for that. I'll probably have to find some good stepper motors off eBay or something. I get Leary but if it does what it should then I'd be fine. Browsing the Mouser site I've come to realize it's a very large website. Is there a certain link or part number you have for the led lights that you use for replacement? Hopefully the ones in the dash cluster, the headlight switch and HVAC control board in the manual dual zone HVAC. That would be helpful to find a part number for the LED chips/bulbs? I may or may have not mentioned but before I repair mine I plan on getting a used board from the junkyard to practice my skills. I don't have the automatic solder sucker but have a manual one which should be enough I think for doing my LED bulbs in my various switches, cluster, etc
@@dtnel yes I saw you mentioned that you were buying a practice board. I am curious of what they will charge you. Junk yards are good at knowing what parts are valuable and high in demand. GM clusters are one of those things. My local junk yard gets $175 for them. Sorry I don't have a mouser link for you, I buy my parts at high volume directly from the manufacturer over seas.
jeffescortlx Maybe a dead board would be the way to go because as you stated used boards are expensive. I found these bulbs in this generation of board you’re working on as there’s about 40 that mouser lists when I searched 604-AA3528... It shows some as cut tape but if I want to buy a lot then I could go with the reel but that’s to many lights. I need to do some more searching in your videos and see if you listed the part number as you did in this video. Picked up a scope a couple weeks ago. Need to change some things around in garage to make room for it and have workspace. I’ll go poke around your 04 style videos to see if I can find the bulb type. It’s the breaks of being new to this part of stuff in automotive repair. Funny thing is my 06 impala has no backlight issues (knock on wood) but the Tahoe has plenty in the dash cluster, light switch, 4wd switch, manual heat backlighting. They must’ve used some bad suppliers at that time, tech changed in 2 years obviously.
The surface tension of the melted solder helps hold the parts in place even when the solder is melted. They will normally stay put as long as the airflow isn't too much or bumped into too hard.

Just a quick question, I just done this to my gauge cluster and I can’t get my needles set properly, they seem to be set good and I drive it once and they go below 0 and I have to try and set them, how do I set them properly?
If you don't mark the starting position before dissembly I would recommend to power the cluster up without any signals coming in to find the home start position and seat the needles then.
If your not setup for electric calibration (seating needles at powered up zero state) you need to mark the starting location and re-seat the needles at that point.

I guess you could if you really tried. They won't fit very well, you'll have to bend the lead straight out and make it as flat as possible. And then I hope that it clears the middle white reflector layer. But usually 5 mm LEDs focus a light forward in a beam rather than spread it out like a surface mount, so you might get really bright spots directly underneath the LEDs.
I agree the blue looks better than the aqua but not something I would bother with unless the cluster needed other work. My spare car has red back lighting and on a long drive at night it really gets bothersome on the eyes. Honestly, why would anyone think bright red instruments in your face at night is a good idea ? At least the aqua is easy on the eyes.
@@jeffescortlx I can't speak for the logic in submarines for red ambient lighting, perhaps it's different when the whole room is lit with red ambient light. Imagine if the entire control room was dark except for one bright red light source. For me at least, the red cluster being the only source of red light in the car just seems annoying especially if you're driving for hours. My daily has blue and it's quite comfortable. Unfortunately, in the spare car, the back lighting is incandescent with red filters which would mean removing the filters leaving the lighting white and probably uneven. I'd certainly change to blue if I could find good led replacements for the incandescent lamps. As you've said, there are many replacement leds on ebay but all cheap unrefined Chinesium. Hello, I have contacted you before about replacing the cluster lights in 2005 Chevy trailblazer to blue. I can't seem to find that conversation. Please let me know again how to reach you. Thank you
My email address is available under the "about" tab on my channel page.
GM boring? You don't say. Good video.
Question; my check engine light is out but the obd ll is saying bulb is out and I was wondering how can I change it to make it come on I have 07 Chevy impala
Has the check engine light been out ever since you bought the car?
@@jeffescortlx yea I just bought it last week and I need the light to be on to pass the smog test
@@dare2bdifferentkustomz The previous owner didn't want to fix whatever was wrong with the car to cause the check engine light to come on. So they may have covered up the light or they could have smashed it off the circuit board, we won't know until the clusters is taken apart to see how it was damaged.
@@jeffescortlx ok so the best thing to do is take cluster off and look at it, then go from there?
@@dare2bdifferentkustomz you have three options. Attempt to repair it yourself. Or if you're not comfortable with this sort of repair you can send it out for repair, or you can find a used junkyard replacement and just deal with whatever the odometer reading change says.
Where can I get those Led's in purple>>>>>>>>>>>>
EBay, mouser, digi-key, element, same places that sell other colors.
Great job👍🏻
Where can i get the white needle for the cluster?
US Speedo probably has them.
Great video bro 👍👍 But do you work on Chrysler 300m clusters ?
Not much. What do you need done to yours.
@@jeffescortlx My clusters works great, i just want to install blue LED's . Thanks for the reply👍
@@Mr_57ChargerRT some Chrysler clusters use electroluminescence backlighting. If yours does changing colors can get tricky.
What is everything else works but the back lights on my cluster the LEDs on a 07 Chevy Silverado new body style
I'm guessing dimmer switch issues or blown fuse.
I have checked every fuse I can possibly I don't understand it to be honest I can turn my dimmer switch down end up in the mileage per hour gets brighter and dimmer but my back lights that show how fast flicker on and off but thank you for replying
@@andreaburch8173 you could have a defective LED in the cluster. Does the rest of the dashboard behave? Climate control and radio light up correctly?
Yes everything else works except the back lights to the LEDs
I have emailed you. I have a 2005 cluster 1500 chevy never been repaired to my knowledge. Cluster has all bad stepper motors lights are burned out oil stepper doesnt work. It's a nightmare. Would be a good video to demonstrate how to tell good from bad and do a full build. Thanks for your videos I just purchased a solder sucker it works great.
Excuse me sir I wanted to ask you a question I haven’t figured it out in months or online, I can’t find the data line for this year cluster can you please help me?
Pin 6, green wire if I remember correctly.
jeffescortlx thank you
What’s is the think you use to glue the Leds and to remove the old ones call
No glue. They removed with a soldering iron and installed with solder and a soldering iron with flux.
Thank you ima look in to it looks badass tbh
Any idea on how to change th VFD color? Thanks
Transparency color film.
@jeffescortlx but the overlay still has the greenish filter on it how i get rid of it? Any idea
@@osvaldoNTC buy an aftermarket third party face that has the color transparency film you want already built in.
Can you change the led's too blue on my 08 cluster? Looks like this one. And how much would it cost?
Yes. 100 plus shipping.
@@jeffescortlx how long does it take?
@@jacobpowers8958 1-4 days.
I tried doing this myself and I got about half the lights to work, I keep trying to get the others to work and sometimes I can fix it but a few are giving me a really hard time. What could I be doing wrong? Or did I possibly break the board?
You could have the polarity wrong, using the wrong pads, causing a short across the pads, or you damaged the board. All just speculating without seeing it.
@@jeffescortlx one of the spots for the leds does seem burnt out, my iron is a bit too hot but I didn't even think of polarities. So if I flip the ones that aren't working around, could that solve it? Since I've posted the comment I've gotten two more to work
@@Locustkill3r yes LED's are polarity sensitive. They are doides.
@@jeffescortlx ok thank you you make it look so easy but it's a huge headache for me😅
What do you charge for this exact issue...I would like the same LEDs as well as fix the display
Around 150 plus shipping
If i do not have a pc. How can i reach you. I have a 2006Chevy silverado. With error message on the odometer. I cannot fix it
If you can leave your email I can get in touch and send you information.
Could I send you my gage cluster? I have a 97 mercury and all I want is different light idk if 97 had a curvature bird or not
Circuit
Somthing that old will probably have user serviceable bulbs.
cool what kind of led should I use for it
Why do you twist the needles before removing them?
To break them free. Otherwise you end up breaking stems or pulling the shafts right out of the motors of you just try to pull straight up.
So what would it take to change the color of the two displays??
To lay a colored film transparency over it.
@@jeffescortlx so no way to make black background with white letters/numbers??
@@nickb4237 no, I don't believe VFD have even been able to do that. They typically emit green.
Is there any way to contact you i have got some question to ask maybe you you can help ty
How would you change it to white and bright?
Same process, but with white LED's.
How do you make the obd2 work to read the cluster
Connect the serial bus wire.
How do I get in touch for a quote for my cluster on a 03 Tahoe
My email is listed under my channel about tab.
Do you still do these...?
Yes I just posted a new video with a similar modification last month th-cam.com/video/0N1c2I2uUQM/w-d-xo.html
Hi how can I send you mine is for 07 Tahoe I need to upgrade with blue led and the RPM is not working

I have a 2013 avalanche, you can do this for my truck?
Yes
@@jeffescortlx
Nice, can you make it even brighter than your video? I would want the brightest possible.
So I ship you mine and you ship it back? What's the turn around time?
Thanks!

I've got an 07 dodge magnum sxt that has gone dim and lost a light in the display below the tach ,could you please send me a link i need it gone through
If it's not the electroluminescent version it might have user serviceable bulbs. I'm not that familiar with dodge.
@@jeffescortlx all my research says it is the electric version as far as the display goes I'm not sure if the bulbs can be user replaced I've gotten answers saying both and i haven't opened it up to see
@@danereynolds2338 are you having problems with the back lighting or the display?
@@jeffescortlx the display has gone out injust the area below the tachometer
@@danereynolds2338 ok. I believe they use a VFD. They are not back lit. Could be board issues.
What wires do you connect to the multimeter
The meter test leads.
Can i use 5mm leds instead
I guess you could if you really tried. They won't fit very well, you'll have to bend the lead straight out and make it as flat as possible. And then I hope that it clears the middle white reflector layer. But usually 5 mm LEDs focus a light forward in a beam rather than spread it out like a surface mount, so you might get really bright spots directly underneath the LEDs.
What u charge to change the led lights to white color
It would depend on the make/model/year of vehicle.
@@jeffescortlx I have a 2008 Silverado one

What kind I do if I cant see the mileage and my gear selector
A: repair it yourself.
B: have someone else repair it.
Technically I thought red was supposed to be the easiest in the eyes, and that is why submarines use red for lighting.
BTW, I love the microscope and it's not as expensive as I thought it would be.
How can I get a hold of you? I got on a desktop computer and it still doesn’t show your email.
There should be a captcha on the about page to answer.
jeffescortlx just tried on IE and Chrome, nothing. Wondering how much Odometer Error and a few burned out lights would be when you have time.
