    Just a note: the machine is no longer in use as it is. It went though several upgrade stages since this video was made and it is now pretty different, MUCH better.

    I made a video of a Happy Ester sign with LED light under. Please watch that one as well.

    Thanks for the video. I'm wanting to do some work with acrylic. But mainly started out with the idea of cutting faceplate panels for electronic projects. But the idea of doing engraving as well is a great added extra.

    What do you program the machine to do after the second and third pass? Does it go deeper or make it wider?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for not answering before. I don't remember in this specific test, but generally I make two runs, both with the same parameters to get rid of uneven edges and possible other tiny defects after the first run. Rarely I just set the second pass a tiny bit deeper, but keep the same X and Y positions, since the with will also change a tiny bit when the Z depth is increased. Remember that I am using V-bit.

    Great stuff...luv your machine...Do you air condition your stepper motors?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I don't know what you mean by air conditioning the steppers. No, the steppers are not cooled, they are well below the maximum temperature. I am monitoring the temperatures and know that for fact.
      In the meantime, I have upgraded my CNC, so what you see here is no longer existing. The upgraded version has much better rigidity, all liner slides are fully supported and the mass is increased as well. I will also upgrade the power supply, the control box and the spindle, so basically a new machine.

    Could a thick side glow fibre optic strand light this up instead of leds?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, it depends on the intensity of the light as well as the fibre optic used. I think that the problem is that fibre otics concentrate light to a spot and here you need some spreading to look evenly lit.

    Do you make small signs for customers?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question. No, I am not making it commercially, at least not until now. I have however upgraded my machine several years ago, so this might change when I have more time. The results with my upgraded machine is MILES better in many ways, as you can see in my other videos.

    Great job BUT yes there is one lol. Whilst watching this video I thought to myself if he was to reverse the pic and graphics then he could inlay it with colour paint or similar and the when viewed from the front it would have a smooth surface so if you made drawer or room plaque it would look and feel better. imho

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. This was just a sort of test of my first DIY CNC. It is OK, but not good enough for what I wanted it for, so I modified and basically build a completely new one after this. So regard this video as a CNC test, nothing else.

    At the very end, why not show the finished sign illuminated in all it's glory?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe next time. This was just a test, the sign was never used.

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simply because it never got any any illumination. This was just a test job.

    wow less than 9 inch a min speed rate paint drys faster than that

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't care if you prefer watching paint dry or grass grow, but since you commented, I guess you know that it was the milling speed, and that with the slow and weak DC motor I used six years ago with that tiny V bit, which easily breaks, that was a very good speed for engraving acrylic. Also, that was my first experimental CNC, which I designed and built on my own to see if it is something I want to have. So, shortly after, I rebuilt it, and my current one is CONSIDERABLY faster in every aspect. Here is some noise which won't let you fall asleep: th-cam.com/video/m1zxi-BjIhc/w-d-xo.html It is quite a bit faster, but for all I know, it may still be too slow for your taste. Then again, you are just someone with a strong opinion and nothing to show... 😂 In the meantime, here is more you can drool over: th-cam.com/video/LFFyb2XtpkE/w-d-xo.html There I am milling aluminium with a speed of 2700 mm/min (106 in/min) but I understand if a guy like you think that's patheticly slow also... 😂😂😂

    Just seen this video in my feed. The best part about V bits and acrylic is taking a torch and quickly hitting up the engraved areas. Cleans it right up!
    I like to engrave in reverse image on the back. Really makes the image pop!

    Thanks for giving the tech info, nice video. :)
    Even after 3 passes you could see that there was stuff still being chunked away.
    ~~Is your machine bit shank 1/8th or 1/4?

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My spindle motor has ER11 collet and the bit I am using here has a 1/8" shank.
      BTW, I have upgraded my CNC, a major upgrade was done. So far I only have one video about the upgrade, but more is coming. Here is a link to the upgrade work, have a look if you are interested:
      th-cam.com/video/1le6lA_0Ckg/w-d-xo.html

    • @AdaptingCamera
      @AdaptingCamera  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, what you see in the third pass is that the Z is lowered a little more, so of course you see more cuts. The last, finishing pass is made a bit slower so it is cleaning what was left to get a nice and even surface. Note that my DIY CNC has gone through a major upgrade since this video was taken, so now it is considerably improved and can do the same job much faster and even better, I can do the same job in just two passes with my new machine.
      The bit I am using is a 30 degree, 0.3mm V-bit with 1/8 shank.

      Details are in the video. 10k rpm at 220mm/min using 30 degree 0.3mm engraving bit. I no longer use this machine, upgraded with a real brushless and more powerful spindle. I have also upgraded almost everything else, so now I can use it much faster and with better results.
