One you missed was the Ram-Line combo mag sold in the 1980s. It was a 30-round, translucent plastic mag designed to fit both the Mini-14 and the AR-15. However it was so flimsy and the plastic so brittle that it really didn't work well in either platform, thus the reason why many of us called the company "Jam-Line" instead. The one I had quickly ended up in the junk box after only a couple of uses.

Back in the mid-late '80's the only USGI mags you could find were from Cooper Industries, CAGE Code 30389. I tried ordering USGI mags from 4 or 5 sources, and all sources shipped me Coopers. Every one would misfeed in the last 5-6 rounds, always with the bolt riding over the tail of the cartridge. You could not buy any others at that time, and I found out the military dumped all the Coopers due to this problem, and Cooper lost their mil contract. The mags made their way into the surplus market. Experimenting, I put wood spacers between the floorplates and springs to take up the space of 6 rounds. Every round, all 24, would feed perfectly. This told me the real problem with these mags was weak springs. I was able to replace the springs with good springs from other damaged non-Cooper mags and they would then work fine. This was before the "green follower".

Truly fantastic video.... May I offer a hope/suggestion for a Part 3. "Feeding the Black Rifle with 300BLK".
I do a lot with 300BLK, how well a magazine works with 300BLK largely comes down to the size and placement of the rib that on a 5.56 rides the side of the case neck or bullet. Also how much the magazine tappers at the front and feed angles can be an issue. Many mags will do fine with small bullets very few will handle monsters like the 205gr Gorilla copper hollow point. The Pmag for example though won't handle any 300BLK well, unless of course one buys their 300BLK specific magazine.
What happens most often is that rib pushes the bullet in causing the rounds to stack pigeon toed. This makes the stack taller at the front nosing down the follower and causing it to jamb. On some, the D60 as a bad example the magazine is itself physically shaped to only handle 5.56, the opening just isn't large enough. On still others a high front edge of the magazine and shallow feed angle combine to jamb the bullet into the front edge of the magazine.
Unfortunately information on that rib and the inner shape of the various magazines is limited on the net and largely comes down to trial and error followed by opinion on the forums. You however have this huge reference collection of magazines. Probably you alone can provide the definitive reference to what magazines are shaped internally large enough to properly stack large 300BLK loadings.

It would be nice to have a video dedicated to the history of steel AR magazines such as the H&K and "FN" (D&H) ones.

Thank you for all the work! I'm glad to see you test magazines with a full-auto rifle; a much harder test than semi.
I've seen Toolman mags for sale, but hesitated. After your report, I may pick one up for my 'collection' and as a range mag.
The ASC mags I own have orange followers. I had not heard of them until I bought a couple in a pawnshop, so I was a bit leery of them. They did feed a friend's M16A1 in happy mode, though.
I've also come across a ROK mag by Kyung Chang with a CAGE code of 3N829. It looks good and ran fine through my semi-auto AR
Regarding Tapco, I have had complete range success with AK 7.62x39 mags and the ones I have fit my WASR 10 perfectly.

Thank you for another informative video Chris. Your experience with the ATI-Schmeisser 60 round mags reflects mine which I was happy to see. On another subject, Magpul and Lancer have started offering mags specific to .300 BLK. Historically I never had any issues with using the 556 mags with .300 BLK, except with rounds over 150 grains where a few feeding issues did happen. I tried the same rounds with both the .300 BLK specific mags from Magpul and Lancer with zero FTF's. Any experience you may have on this subject would be appreciated.

Okay industries are definitely the best usgi alum mag made imo as well. I tend to stray away from C-products aluminum mags as I've had waaay too many qc problems with them; particularly with the front wall where the two halves overlap. They tend to not be welded flush and hang up on the nose of bullets so they won't rise up the mag smoothly, especially with heavier/longer bullets. Though I've had good luck with their steel mags and those are gtg imo.

I was checking out your Amazon Store book section. Great reading list of books and reference material. I would just add one book to it "The World's Assault Rifles" by Gary Paul Johnston and Thomas B. Nelson. It follows the assault rifle from the STG-44 in 1944 up to 2010, and everything design in between. The hardcover has been out of print for awhile, but the kindle version is every affordable at $14.99 and lighter. The hardcover book weighs in at close to 10 pounds!

They do fine with longer bullets but with shorter 90gn bullets the bullets nose dive and hit the front of the mag. Just trimmed some material with my pocket knife and they seem ok now at least for the range and possibly hunting. I also just got in 3 of the utg 30rd 223 mags with the windows. So far so good on those just figured I’d give them a try but when it comes down to it, my go to will always be Magpul either gen 1 2 or 3

Try shooting the Surefeed E2’s in a rifle that doesn’t have M4 feed ramps. Lots of internet chatter about issues in those rifles due to the presentation angle. I have some but haven’t had a chance to test.

Use tan okay surefeed e2 in my rra a2 standard, which i believe has standard rifle feed ramps and ran without a hitch, locking on last round, no problem inserting full ona closed bolt etc

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Steel are most durable and not prone to problems with environmental changes. Proper finish magazines that are steel do well with sand. Not proper will corrode. Polymer has no memory if dropped, they dont bend. They often break when compromised. Many polymer mags mar work better with faster cyclic actions.

@@SmallArmsSolutions Some trivia referring to your comment about mag finish and sand: I think the parkerized finish of the Beretta M9 mags caused problems when interacting with the sand of the Middle East. I think they switched to non-parked mags. I don't know how much of a difference the non-parked mags made in the Middle East. I'm pretty sure the parked M9 mags were made by Checkmate.

He also says Okay Surefeed if you don't want polymer for some reason (often save a little weight with aluminum, but you have to worry about bent feed lips). For hi-capacity, recommends the Magpul D60 though in his own experience the Surefire also works well (it's just more expensive, less compatible, and doesn't have last shot hold open, the feed lips may bend affecting reliability if you drop it while loaded, and I don't recall if it's heavier). He recommends a particular modern steel magazine as the best steel magazine (although you're generally better off with a Pmag or Lancer), the name of which I can't remember exactly (sorry, I don't want to say the wrong one), though he says the cheaper steel E-Landers are also good (but only their 5.56 mags).
He also says to keep an eye on the new competitor to the Pmag just introduced by the engineer who finalized the Lancer magazine. It has a blaze orange follower and I forget the name again. But he's currently testing it and will do a video on it. I'm sure we'll hear more about it. I doubt many people are excited to be a magazine early adopter when it's just an alternative to a proven design with at most minor advantages. But still, it would be a major accomplishment for a competitor to Magpul to even slightly improve upon the Pmag.
The most exciting magazines for further testing and development are the Torkmags. If their winding spring proves reliable and they perfect it, the potential is higher capacity in a magazine no bigger than a standard 30rd STANAG magazine (by replacing the conventional follower and spring with something that takes up less space in the mag, leaving more space for ammo). Potentially, they could make every other magazine design obsolete. If so, they could end up licensing their spring and follower to everyone, including Magpul. Honorable mention to the Magpul D60 for being the first drum magazine for for combat use since it's as reliable as a box magazine and it's height is so low that it doesn't hinder going prone. Makes a good "first mag", especially in a lightweight gun. Perhaps that design with also be significantly improved with further development, but it's good already.
