@@angelamacchi977 C'mon that's not true at all. Considering that Tadej Pogačar is a serial winner of the races where he appears, this would be completely normal.
But on Wedu they are actually very anti-Pogi, especially George Hincapie, sometimes Armstrong too.

It's true. But Wedu JB2, with Johan Bruynel is a super podcast as well. Johan is an incredible connoisseur of cycling and a very interesting conversationalist.
Lance A. and George H. can hide from the interestingness of the show because they are much much more boring on their Wedu podcast.

Pogacar was perfect this year because he avoided crashes and avoided illness through the Tour and when Pogacar doesn't crash or get sick or takes all his calories he's on the form he was this year and it was clearly shown this year as he never dropped.
And 2023 Stage 5 Pogacar's girlfriend Urska crashed hard that day and Pogacar was worried and just didn't feel like fighting or attacking that day that's why he didn't try that stage and Vingegaard gained all that time.

Perfect means 100% A+. Pogacar’s performance this year deserves a 96% - clearly top of the class, but still some areas to improve if you want to be called “perfect.”
I know many commentators would ding Pogacar for not riding defensively once he had a sizable lead, but I strongly disagree with that sentiment. Pogacar is an aggressive racer who is always looking for the next win and is not willing to rest on his laurels. Pogacar dominated this Tour with his style of racing, so I would give him maximum points on that front.

They also showed gear he was using earlier and it just seemed too easy of a gear for the flat terrain. middle of the cassette. When they sprinted head up he was spinning A LOT. maybe he was bonking like you said.
As far as stage 14 and beyond? It is week 3 and he was danged determined to disprove that "he fades in week 3" myth. He faded Jonas AND won stages.

Really respect your expertise, and I've learned a ton about tactics through your channel. How can you tell when it's a calories issue vs just having a bad day? In hindsight it seems like in this year's stage 11 it might have also been a calories issue for Pogs, because clearly he was riding better than Vingegaard and recovering better throughout the tour. But in the moment I couldn't tell if Vingegaard just recovered much better on the prior descent and out-climbed Pogacar, while Johan Bruyneel said in one of their podcasts that day that he felt it was a calories issue.

Chris I'd like your input on this idea: What if the reason Pogacar was so aggressive all the time in the early days of the Tour this year was because the Tour was backloaded in terms of climbing and he was just trying to put as much CTL on Vingegaard as he could before the mountains, hoping for a 2023-pog-style blow up from him in the 3rd week?

Preperation. He was 6 weeks on hometrainer only and was racing in Flanders. This year he just raced the strade, volta a Catalunya, LBL, Giro and Tour. That's a lot less than previous years as preperation. Exept the Giro then. Without it it would've been 15minutes between him and Jonas.

The "problem" for cycling analysts and experts and arm-chair commentators is that strategy and tactics kind of go out the window when you're looking at a rider with seemingly infinite matches, all strengths and no weaknesses, and who's solution to every stage and moment is to just power through and dominate with sheer force.
That doesn't leave much room for analyzing, because you end up simply concluding that the guy wins because he's the fastest on the bike, and that's all there is to it.

He's never going to invest the energy he needs to in reading the race ahead of him. And he's never going to invest time in developing better bike handling skills. This year's 2nd crash -- the one that took him out of the race -- is a perfect example. He was poorly positioned (too far back). He was not reading the road ahead of him -- there were 8 guys between him and the initial guy who went down, ALL of whom took evasive action and either avoided the crash or cushioned their falls. And, he took literally no evasive action, while every other rider around him did. He literally just plowed full-speed into the back -- and wound up taking down at least 4 other guys in front of and around him that otherwise wouldn't have gone down, not to mention all the guys behind.

He is the best rider in the world at this point and as the captain, he is supposed to win.
