- I get asked very often about my negative rake scrapers. You can buy them here and there, but it's easy to turn a single bevel scraper into negative rake. I also include a short segment on sharpening carbide cutters used in woodturning.

Thanks Phil for going over the sharpening of the tools. I like the diamond card nice tool. I remember my Grandpa would always use honing oil on his sharping stone when he sharpened his pocket knives. He would get them razor sharp.

Im kinda new to turning lathe. I picked up some antique tools. 1 was a old craftsman. But these are very interesting an much better. I got about a dozen. Gotta work a fixture so l can properly sharpen them. Hey lm use to carving tools an a maple mallet to make my cups bowls and spoons. But l do have a big cherry tree cup up. Cause l figure there will be much damage while learning lol. Thanks for all your info. You have a gift thanks for sharing.

Did the same thing with the Benjamin's Best scrapers. Absolutely love them. A nice fine shaving comes off the burr. Not self feeding like regular scrapers.

I started turning last Fall and have heard quite a bit about the advantages of negative rake scrapers. I just purchased larger sized one and want to turn my small round scraper into a negative rake scraper. Your video is just what I needed. Thanks.

Hi 👋 Phil from Phil, Great tutorial on explaining your negative rake scrapers, I have been doing some Woodturning yesterday and today, for the first time in awhile. And I have been thinking about making a negative rake scraper as I have a large piece of tool steel which in some respects is no good for man or beast, It is part of a cup of soup that I had made nearly 40 years ago so I am thinking of cutting a segment of it, Great tutorial on your negative rake scrapers, and on the cutting angle 📐, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.

I am slowly turning my regular scrapers into negative rakes by simply working on the top. But I like to maintain the steep angle on the lower bevel. I’ve also experimented with sharpening so that the grinder wheel is going towards the edge. It feels awkward the have handle lifted up but it produces a bigger burr.

I know you don’t have to but I sharpen my carbide tips about every other time I use them. Makes them last longer and your cuts are so much cleaner.

As far as sharpening a carbide cutter....The dulling of a carbide cutter is due to the wearing down of the beveled edge where it meets the larger diameter (top) face creating a 90º face to the top face on the beveled diameter. It may be ever so small (.010" or so) and can be seen if held under a light at the correct angle. Lapping the top edge needs to be done enough to get below (remove) that 90º worn face or the cutter will still have issues cutting. A magniying device makes seeing this very easy to see such as a headstrap magnifier or a microscope (if one is available).

If I was showing a new person how to turn, the first thing we would do it spend a week or more learning how to sharpen your tools. Nothing does more to discourage new turners than not using a sharp tool and they assume they have to spend a lot more money for better tools or that they just can't do it. Sharp tools make the hobby so much more enjoyable but I don't think enough people stress sharpening first.

You should stick your negative rake scrapers in the freezer before using them, when you take them out to use them you'll get an even bigger brrrrr!! 😆 🤣 😂

I'm so glad you did a vid on sharpening carbide! I'm new to lathe turning. Got my JET 1221 in November. All I have are cheap WEN chisels / carbide cutters at the moment.
Two questions: Q #1 can please you give a link or brand name for the diamond sharpeners and oil? Also, could you please do a complete bowl sometime only using carbide tips?
I'd like to see how you do it and if you get smoother cuts then I. I've had a few nasty catches and a couple bowls fly off the lathe. My last bowl actually blew up and I ended up going from a good size bowl to a salad bowl with what was left over. Thank you so much Phil!
F.Y.I. I do want to get regular lathe chisels but will have to save money for them, the grinder, CBN wheels, guides....etc I didn't realize this was going to be such an expensive hobby! lol

For me to do a bowl using only carbide would be torture for me and probably all the viewers. I don't like using carbide tools and only use them when nothing else will do. I feel like it takes the "Art" out of turning. I can't feel the wood in the same way I can with high speed steel tools. I feel like I'm just steering the tool around and that takes the fun out of turning, sorry.
Yes, sharpening is expensive and I will discuss that in an upcoming video. I probably have about $800 into my sharpening setup.
If it makes you feel any better, in the beginning I couldn't turn worth a darn with HSS and I had bowls flying left and right! I switched to carbide just so I could turn "something!" Still had wood flying everywhere! After awhile I learned how to use conventional tools. Now it is very rare for me to even come close to getting a catch. You need to practice using a light touch, that's the best advice I could give anyone. Hope all this helps! 😊

It'll be at least a year before I can afford lathe chisels and a sharpening system. Until then, I'm going to get diamond cards for the carbide tips.
I'm disabled and was looking for something to help get me off the couch after gardening season is over. So, after watching countless lath videos from great turners and teaches like yourself, I knew I had to try it for myself.
Like you, I love live edge and when possible, with bark :) I've mostly been using wood from a massive 200 yr old Hackberry tree that came down on my property last year. (2 tree companies told me they thought the tree was about 200 yrs old) The main trunk was wider than my truck hood!
The color, patterns and spalting in this Hackberry wood amazes me every time I work with it! Absolutely stunning! Sad thing is, before I thought about getting a lathe, I burned most of the tree. Now I wish I would've known what was hiding behind that bark and that I'd get a lathe!!

Yes and I should have pointed that out, Lori. Any carbide that has the flat top (all of them?) can be sharpened in the same manner. 😊

Ah, Sand O Flex, Phillip. The metal ones that I use are no longer made. You can find them on eBay along with the newer, lighter versions which I think I prefer. But, watch pricing on eBay, people seem to think these things are collectibles and they are not. Hey Phil. Quick question, what CBN wheels do you use for your grinder? I have the same grinder as you but I’ve been using the stock wheels that it came with. Awesome video as always!
I have 80 grit for shaping and 180 grit for sharpening, Robert. If I were buying them again, I would get 1 1/2" wide instead of these 1" wide ones. Easier to keep the tool on the wheel. I've adapted and don't usually have a problem with it but would still get the wider wheels given the choice. I do like the square edges on my wheels rather than the radiused ones you can get. 😊

Thanks for video. One question. Can I change the shape on my scrapers. I have an extra 1/2" square scraper and a round nose scraper. Can I change them into a shear scraper and a bowl scraper? Want to make both negative rake.
Sure you can! Just don't overheat the edges. Take your time, you will get it right! 😊
