  • How long does it take for the 2023 Chevy Silverado 3.0L LZO Duramax diesel to start in below freezing temps? We put the truck to the test to see just how hard it is to start as well as how long it takes to warm up.

    My experiences
Ecm controls idle at 1000rpm until reaches 80°
    Kicks to 900-950rpm until 95-100°.
Auto climate control starts to flow warm coolant to cabin heater core at around 80°
700-750RPM at 120-165° coolant valve directs more warm coolant inside, noticeably warmer
180-220° peak ideal operating temp engine really smooths out and full range of hot/cool interior temps.
2022.5 and newer there is no longer an option in the menus to increase idle. It’s all ECM.

I have a 2022 with a 3.0 lm2. I live in central Alberta Canada and it gets cold. I'm just discovering how these diesels handle these temperatures. The last couple days have been -25 C or -13 F and this morning started up with no issues. Tonight as I speak it is -32 c and yes tonight I plugged it in for the first time. I have owned Ram (Cummins) for several years. While I don’t live in an area where the block heater is normally “required”, I still use it at home on a timer. I have it set to come on for 2-3 hours before I leave for work every day when overnight temps are in the 20’s.
As far as this truck not having fuel gelling issues as you mentioned, that would be more a function of the fuel suppliers vs the truck features or capabilities.

    • @gill998
      @gill998 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fuel heaters maybe? It's surprisingly difficult to find info on if the trucks have them, but they would be an example of a truck specific system that would reduce gelling.
I only use the block heater on my 6.6l duramax below -20c, but it has started fine at -25c without it and I've never used a fuel additive. The block heater on the truck supposedly will only run if the temp is under -18c.

Although I am a big Toyota fan and I own a 21 Tundra, I regard the Chevy/GMC 1500 trucks with the 3.0L Diesel to be the best overall half ton pickup trucks. The one thing I do not like about GM trucks is the pricing of the additional features you have to pay for. I think Tim mentioned that he does not have an adaptive cruise control and he has the highest trim - that does not make sense to me - it should come with the adaptive cruise.

Tim my Colorado diesel has an electric grid heater built into the heating system that turns on when you set the heat to max. I set it to max when I get home and auto start the truck in the morning. The electric heater clears the windshield as it’s warming up. Then as I drive to work the diesel starts to warm up and I turn the heat down and the electric heat turns off and the engine provides heat like a gas vehicle. Yours probably has it to. GM builds this electric grid into the heater system so you don’t have to wait to get heat from the engine. That’s why you felt warm air on the windshield before there was any real heat in the engine.
You also have a valve that directs all engine coolant from the engine head to the heater core not the rad until the engine gets warm.

    1. Your engine was already high idling at 1k rpm where normal idle is just 600-700rpm because diesels don’t normal idle high on start up like a gas engine does, they just start and idle at the lowest rpm possible.

Was just looking at the 2023 manual to find the Engine Heater. It states If equipped, the engine heater can provide easier starting and better fuel economy during engine warm-up in cold weather conditions at or below -18 degree C (0 degree F) . Vehicles with an engine heater should be plugged in at least four hours before starting. An internal thermostat in the plug-end of the cord may exist, which will prevent engine heater operation at temperatures above -18 degree C (0 degree F).

The block heater in new gmc trucks (my 21 3500 specifically) doesn’t kick in until -15c. Plugged in -40c the truck has no issues starting, but it also has 2 battery warmers. The truck will high idle on its own but I can manually set the high idle by engaging the park brake then hit the cruise control toggle on the wheel and it will kick into high idle manually.

    • @R3lyc

@@samgford my opinion is it absolutely helps. In -35 city driving the truck has a hard time keeping the engine warm without it, the active shutters do block a lot of airflow but not as good as with the cover. The GMC manual recommends using it after -5c. I believe. The grill cover also protects the active grill from the elements such as excessive snow or ice that could potentially freeze and/or obstruct the proper function of that grill shutter system.

it was all nice and good, technology made it so much better, and driveability is much improved but I like to know the cost of ownership compared to a gasoline truck, maintenance, and fuel cost including all the filters because usually, diesel has a water separator filter and those are not cheap, the life expectancy of the injection pump because the 6.6 Duramax and the ram Cummins as some issues, the cost of removing the transmission to inspect the oil pump belt, while you have the transmission out you might as well change that belt instead of paying twice, can you change this belt without lifting up the engine? I drive a 2009 tundra with 350000 miles so I that point if it was a chevy diesel I would have to remove the transmission 3 times? does that make any sense to you? I never had to open my transmission the only thing I did so far is a fluid change every 60000 miles, my conclusion is if you keep it less than 4 years maybe but if you are a regular joe like me with a family who needs to keep his truck and make it last, it is a different story.

Any diesel engine will be hard to start in minus degree weather your cranking a motor that has heavy oil in the crankcase and on top of that you have build up enough heat in the cylinder bores to ignite the diesel fuel... grid heaters do help with that process but combustion in a diesel engine doesn't happen as quick as a gasoline engine would... considering you have 9.5 to 10 to 1 compression in a gasoline engine vs 21 or 22 to 1 compression in a diesel engine plugging the diesel in to the block heater does help but you may not always have that option depending on your location
