  • Diesels don't typically like the cold. With this in mind, publisher Tim Esterdahl tests the new 2023 Chevy Silverado 3.0L Duramax Diesel in below zero temps by using the engine block heater as well as not using the engine block heater.

A couple weeks ago I drove off the lot with a GMC Canyon Duramax. I didn’t know the 1/4 ton trucks could come with a diesel but as soon as I found out I started a search. Took six months to find what I wanted.
I’m impressed by the vehicle and the baby Duramax; one of the concerns for me was the cold weather (common to see -20s F for a week or two every winter) but have had zero issues with seeing -11 and didn’t have it plugged in as that happened while at work for the day.
Hopefully Americans will start pulling their heads out of their sphincter and realize diesel has many more benefits than gasoline and manufacturers start offering more diesel vehicles (easy way for them to increase brand MPG also)

My 2022 AT4 3.0 will idle high when cold then drop rpms to normal once it hits full operating temp. I haven't seen actual fuel gelling in yrs. Most fuel related issues today in light and heavy-duty diesels running winter blends are related to water in the fuel water separator filter. Keep filters changed preferably changing before winter. It only takes a thimble full of water to freeze and cause low power or shut down issues that some still call "fuel gelling".

Todays Diesel cold weather startability is so much better than it was that of say 20 years ago and that has A LOT to do with both engine technology and even the additives they put in the fuel itself and that is mostly across the board from most mfgs.

Back in 1983-84 I purchased a new 1983 Chevy half ton with the diesel engine. A bunch of us went to Ontario, Canada to go snowmobiling. Two of the guys drove their Oldsmobile's with the diesel engine. We were all having a beer and decided to go to another place for food and drinks. The two guys with the Oldsmobiles were laughing, telling me my truck will not start. I asked why not? They said: "It's 32 degrees below zero. our cars are plugged in, you aren't." I was new to the diesel, and that was new to me. Any how, we bet a beer (like we needed more) and they stood by while I got into my truck, AND, it started right up! All of our vehicles had been sitting outside for two days, while we were snowmobiling. I'll never forget that day, or those Two FREE Beers! lol..

In my experience of having and driving diesels for many years is most of the time they don't jell. A lot of the times it is water in the fuel filter. I have made it a practice changing fuel filters on a regular basis and when I know we are going to be below 10 degrees for a few days or more. In heaver pickups like 3/4 tons, most of them will have 3 plus gallons of oil. So then need time to warm that oil up. I currently have 335,000 miles on a 2017 F250 6.7 diesel that runs perfectly. Looking forward to getting many more miles out it.

Tim I jump in my truck and just drive off in the cold BUT, I drive very easy. Light throttle until it shows some heat on the gauge. Problem is when it’s cold oil is slow to move around and oil all the moving parts. One of the most critical parts is the Turbo. So go gently on the throttle until the gauge shows some heat.
This is the same as when you shut the truck off. If you been heavy on the throttle let it idle a bit before shutting it off. This lets the turbo cool down.
On the other hand if your not going to keep it, don’t worry about it as it will be someone else’s issue….

Wind chill temperatures are IRRELEVANT to vehicle operation, except that wind will strip warmth from a vehicle more quickly. As to fuel gelling, diesel fuel sold in areas that regularly see subfreezing winter temperatures should be winterized. To be sure to prevent gelling, adding anti-gelling fuel treatment at every fill up in cold weather should minimize gelling issues. Finally, unlike pre-2007 diesels, extended idling of current generation diesel engines, especially in cold weather, raises the risk of major (and quite costly) emission system malfunctions, especially the DPF, multifold. In my 2012 6.7 Ford Super Duty diesel pickup, each hour of extended idling would raise the DPF soot level by 15 percentage points or more. I avoided extended idling as much as possible, and also had the option on the truck to driver-initiate a stationary regen if the DPF reached full while the vehicle was stationary. Also, unless the engine idle RPM is raised (manually or by the ECM of the vehicle), in subzero (F.) temperatures, a diesel engine will actually LOSE heat while idling. And -9° F. ambient temperature is not really that cold. -20° F. to -30° F. ambient temperature IS really cold and below -30° F. gets more brutal with each degree the temperature drops. At -50° F., unwinterized #2 diesel looks like a snowcone, and #1 diesel fuel will start to gel.

The radiator fans kicked on high speed almost right away, though, as did yours. The problem is the fans did not turn off the entire time I was driving. This caused the truck to never warm up to normal operating temperature. This is a common problem, accordingly to GMC Sierra forum. Plug it in and an overheating code is tripped, causing the fans to stay on. Please look into this.

It’s the 4Auto transfer case. Completely clutch based system. In 4Auto, it can command a variable torque split by changing the duty cycle commanded on the clutch in the transfer case (basically AWD). It can also command no power to the front with a 0 duty cycle. 4Hi and 4Lo only force a 50/50 torque split command by the computer. The clutches are then applied and not varied to achieve this. It is possible, though rare, to overcome the friction of the clutches with too much torque and cause them to slip. There’s logic in the computer to temporarily disable 4WD to prevent the clutches from overheating in the case that this happens.
It’s not limited to GM, Ford trucks with the 4A transfer case (in fords it’s only Lariat and higher trims) work the same way. That’s why Ford spent more money on the raptor and high end Tremor F150 to use what they call their “hi-lock” transfer case (made by Borg Warner). In that tcase, it has clutches that work in 4A, but is able to also bypass the clutches and mechanically lock in 4Hi and 4Lo. I find it very interesting that GM didn’t do something similar on their most off road ready truck, the ZR2, as well. Normal pickups even when used off road will never encounter a situation where they’re able to apply enough torque to overcome the clutches, which is why the “hi-lock” system isn’t necessary on those. Possible with a double locked truck like the ZR2, though unlikely.

@@Austin-iq7ds thank you very much for that information. I think I found similar when researching it. I don’t think the average owner needs to worry much about it but on the F-150 forums many high powered or boosted owners have mentioned potential slippage when in 4A (doing things like 1/4 mile etc). It’s also quite interesting to me the Tremor can be optioned with either it or the hi lock t-case, dont think too many owners are going to be aware of the differences.

Tim, I am impressed, -4 and the engine started almost like a gas engine. I would think that your gas stations would be running a winter mix of diesel so you should not have to worry about gelling. (however, I am a gut, so we both know that means I am always wrong 🙂). We are at -14 with a wind chill of -32. That is a bit chilly for Tropical Minnesota. Reminds me of the days when folks that owned VW Bugs or vans would come out 10 min early and use a blow torch to thaw the oil (granted, it was 1979, but still...). Hate to say it, but I love this temperature. The snow crunches as you walk, and tires have good traction because the snow that covers the ice does not slide at -14 below. The only thing is that if you take a deep breath through your nose, chances are that you will freeze your nostrils together. Try engaging the parking brake, then hit the toggle on the cruise control. That’s how my 21 3500 manually fast idles.
Also ford and gm use a different glow plug style than ram. While the Ram makes you wait a while for the plugs the Ford and GM HD trucks glow plugs get so hot so fast you don’t even notice it when you go to turn it on.
As far as -30 and colder temps go, I let it warm up for 15 minutes to allow for the oil pressure to normalize. They use 15w-40 in the 6.6 and that stuff is like cold molasses in these temps.
Up north here the fuel manufacturers incrementally increase the cold weather temps the diesel fuel can handle before gelling. By the second week of December our diesel is rated for -42c.

You don’t need to sit and idle for 10 min, especially with it plugged in. Drive easy for the first few miles and you’re good. You’re going to warm it up faster by driving, along with the rest of the drivetrain fluids. Sitting idling is just running the engine cold for longer.
