- I completed my first Lord of the Rings diorama! An epic duel of an iconic scene where Gandalf faces the Balrog. The project took three weeks and for me it was an important milestone to reimagine this epic scene with a different scale game than usual. I had a lot of fun with this framed diorama. Hope you enjoy!

Amazing I love how the black 3.0 absorbs the light it truly makes it look like the Demon is coming out of the darkness amazing.
This was exactly the plan. Glad I was able to pull it off. Thank you!
I know that Gandalf is basically an angel incarnate. Still, imagine being a loremaster, rather than a Diablo like sorcerer, facing a giant evil made of flame, hatred and shadow, and you know that if you can't stop it, it's the end of the world, as it would take the Ring. Here, even such a being really know fear and an incredible pressure, having to bravely standing against evil and darkness incarnate.
Really an amazing peice of work! It totally encapsulate the feeling.
Many many thanks for your kind words and your lovely text ;)
@@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART Well, your work is very motivational to search for new ideas, feelings and keep painting. Thank you very much for sharing your work!
@@klug5916 thank you for enjoying it :)
Wowzers. Such command of scale and drama
@@nicholasking1266 many thanks :)
That’s a bit extreme 😳 well done
Thank you! :)
Anyone else want to paint right now!!!?
Incredible work, sir!! 🤘
Many thanks!
Truly awe-inspiring!
The mastery of OSL shown in the depiction of floating embers coming off its back shown on the back wall of the diorama make it seem as if they are drifting off into the depths behind it.
The single light that is Gandalf, holding off the crushing weight of darkness, not just of the Balrog, but of the darkness that will envelop all of Middle Earth if he and the rest of the Fellowship fail...
I am so happy that so much is visible in it. Thank you for telling your impressions. Glad you like ir!
Wow, that looks AMAZING.
Many thanks!
I love this Roman. I watched Lord of the Rings for the first time last week, this is perfect timing for me. I loved boylei hobby times version of this scene but yours is another level. The use of the 10mm Gandalf and the view point behind him really captures the feel and exponential power and courage of the grey wizard. Congratulations on this piece
Thanks a lot for your kind words :) - perfect timing!
I’m always amazed by your art Roman! A huge source of inspiration
Arigato!
Beautiful Roman! Love how strong the darks are
Black 3.0 is making this crazy effect ... glad you like it!
What an amazing job you've done!!.Thanks for sharing
Thx for enjoying it!
This is absolutely amazing!
Many, many thanks! Glad you like it!
I adore the bravery you showed when putting that strong black over the wonderful flame effect on the Balrog. You covered up so much of the beautiful work but it was the right call. The finished figure looks like a flame suspended in shadows.
Putting the sprinkled effects in and just accepting so much randomness, giving up the control was another brave step. This artistic bravery is one of those important factors that devide the average painters from the true masters I believe. This video inspires me to strive to be more daring when painting my own minis.
That insane contrast between Gandalf and the Balrog in color, size and clarity works so well. It creates two points of focus in this piece. The confrontation of the wizard and the monstous demon becomes an optical confrontation as well. I just really like this diorama!
Many thanks! Superhappy you like it so much. Thanks a lot for your in depth analysis. I am happy that bravery guided me through it!
Products like Black 3.0 are seldom justified in miniature painting, they just swallow up all the detail. But this was entirely justified, and as good a use as I've seen in a long time. The Balrog looming from the utter dark is epic.
When you were tapping the brush to get the splatter point of light effect, have you ever tried loading the brush with paint, and then just spraying it with air through the airbrush. You can produce the same effect, if not better control, without risking hitting the mini with a loaded brush.
Spectacular final piece.
Thanks, I felt the same. If you find a good reason where to use it than it can be justified.
Thanks for the hint. I did the thing with the airbrush and brush for blood splatters long time ago, it is true that this might work too. Not sure if it will be dots or a mess like with the blood effect I created back then :D ... Must try. On the other hand I had no fear risking hitting the mini as it was just a dark Balrog and a quick repair paint with black is easily done ... mmh! Many thanks for making my brain think :)
Such an awe-inspiring piece!
By the way, if you want an even darker black, I recommend the japanese Musou Black paint.
I can not imagine a darker Black at this point as I am really happy with its outcome, but maybe I am able to give it a try one day. Thanknyou!
Gorgeously crafted!!! Absolutely epic!!! ❤😊❤
Thank you!
@@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART you are welcome 🤗
You certainly succeeded in making it even more epic!
Thank you! I am really happy to hear that :)
So much is communicated in this piece, really love the concept, thank you as always for sharing and inspiring
Thank you for enjoying my creations and taking the time to comment. Really appreciated!
EPIC!!!! We are not worthy!!!! 😀
Ehh! Arigato!
Epic! and holy moly, that black 3.0 😲 The use of "light" as the focus works so well, great composition 🤘
Gracias!
That looks amazing. You captured the epic feel of that scene perfectly. Great work as always. Thanks for sharing!
Many thanks. Glad you like it!
Amazing, this is really epic! Glad you share this and this is the best version I've seen as I already mentioned. This is a big inspiration for me, not only the diorama but your journey.
Superhappy you like it!!
Really liked watching it as it remembered me of my private coaching with you ♥️ Next coaching when? 😉
@@Tobythebrush good memories indeed. Next Coaching? 2039. I got so many people asking. Well I will offer small group masterclasses of 3-5 students soon to be able to offer the experience to learn from me to many more people. Hope to see you there :)
I shall be the one who clicks it past the 123 likes to 124... xD Amazing Dio!
@@TheMiniMadCat thank you!
Maybe it’s bit too dark.
A little bit more light emanating from Gandalf? In form of small diameter piercing rays, maybe? Could give more depth, too.
The Balrog - „Shadow and Flame“ - looks fine so far, I wouldn’t “lighten him up“ (I COULDN‘T anyway xD your painting skills are way beyond mine)^^
Nonetheless an awesome job!
Thank you very much. I would love to show it to you in real. It is exactly in the middle of too bright or too dank, but it is not visilble on photos and video :D ... thank you! Glad you like it!
I couldn't even tell what it was at first because everything is so dark. The thumbnail really confused me because it looked like a floating campfire in the middle of a black void and I couldn't figure out what scene it was supposed to be. It took hearing you explain and actually seeing the work in progress before I got it. I know it's an atmospheric piece and probably better seen in person than on a screen, but I completely missed what it was for all the darkness.
This is good feedback. Thank you. Also good feedback on the thumbnail part!! Many thanks!
@@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART When you show it up close, it's beautiful. I think it's easy to miss the fine details among the dark from far away.
@@kscott2655 true. Very true. As it seems this will be going to a Museum is Las Vegas, maybe it is possible to see it in real one day :)
Amazing results, but would it not have been easier to paint the balrog first before putting him in the box?
Thank you! For some it is easier. I prefer it this way as I feel more like painting a canvas :)
Looks marvelous, how long would something like this take you? Thanks for sharing!
This took me about two weeks, while working 5 days in the studio each week about 6-7 hours a day.
Thank you!
