3:54-4:01 put on headphones, and then put your overtone listening hat on. Listen for the octave, flat 7, and major 7th overtones colide. Can you hear them??

That is some of the best most in flow tuned in conducting ive ever seen. Sculpting the sound in his hands, wrists, arms, body. He doesnt pull. He gathers the sound energy and reflects it back to his men. Its a dance. They are all tuned to each other and he just pulls the sound like taffy.

I Lost my wife of 42 years last October ! Had I known about this glorious
piece of music I would probably asked for permission to use it at her
funeral. This music is out of this world, absolutely wonderful ! I am 64 years old
and have never ever heard anything more fantastic ! Oh how I love it !
Please accept my deepest admiration for a wonderful song and the brilliant execution of
it. This must be heaven as close as we can get there alive ! Dani Lindroos

With the respect that you deserve, perhaps I could suggest that when an act in memoriam is done for your wife they may include this song. I really have also been amazed. A hug!

For all the overtone listeners out there, these are my favorite overtones here! I'm leaving out the 1s 3s and 5s unless close to others.
    0:51 -The octave and seventh
    0:58 -The ninth!
1:42 -The octave and minor third (basses sing the second)
    2:38 -Dat NINTH
3:55 -The octave and major AND minor sevenths
    4:34 -The seventh and ninth!
5:20 - 6:14 -Too many beautiful overtones to count
6:14 -An overtone with only octaves. wow
    6:31 -The octave and seventh
6:39 -They form a chord themselves.
    Have fun!

Man has never created an instrument that could compare with the human voice. This was absolutely breathtaking.

  • @AncientAndMysterious

This is absolutely magnificent. The power and feeling the choir puts into the piece is unbelievable, and the acoustics and echoes more than make up for their dropping the pitch. Quit bitching about them falling a half-step and give them the credit they deserve. If you'd rather hear perfect pitch than something like this, go and listen to Lil' Wayne or some other autotune "artist."

Sheer magic. Will these lucky few ever be *more alive* anytime in their lives on this planet than inside their singing....and how lucky for us to have ears to hear! What a blessing this music is......

    Sure on this shining night
    Of star made shadows round,
    Kindness must watch for me
    This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
    High summer holds the earth.
    Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder wand'ring far
    alone
    Of shadows on the stars.

To Master and Singers of Westminster
I'd like to show my astonishment in front of your beautiful performance and great arrangement.
I'm an Italian tenor and your music shocked me as few time happened to me. Seven minutes to touch the soul in the deep. Thank you very much. Bravi!

  • @axlemcdonald

The strength in this "hand waving business" is that each individual expresses themselves fully, and artfully. It adds to a beautiful cumulative effect that you may not be used to. If it were a regimented production, it would be as exciting as staring at a gramophone. Sacred music should always be brought to life in the moment, or it is just an homage to the dead past.

It's got to be the definitive performance of this version. 5.35 to the end is flawless. It does that thing that music very rarely does by going way above and beyond - just when we think it can't get any better it delivers this triumph of harmonic power and beauty.

  • @vk2nf
    @vk2nf 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

5:30-6:30 is surely the most sublime choral music ever written? The wall of sound and richness of the harmonics is like Tallis or Palestrina.

@ Fred Tracy... This is one of the reasons SO many people feel the British are the most arrogant people on earth. Honestly, WHO CARES what a British choir does? The clear implication in your comment is that no British choir would do this, and THEREFORE no one else should either. As though the British are the final arbitors of what is, or is not acceptable in life. Take your smug, self-satified arrogance and shove it.

I just went to rehearsal last night in my chorus, and It is so amazing to watch these guys and realize how difficult it is to sing music of this calibur with such pristine sound and intonation, and pretty much perfect everything! :) This is truly an amazing chorus. Also, this arrangement is a great song. Very fulfilling and uplifting music, it is good music for the soul :)

That's effectively a G chord with a 9th being sung in the lead line of the small ensemble. :-) What makes it really cool is the echo of the larger chorus "whomping" in with the lower inversion of the chord. Very lush. But it works beautifully, doesn't it?! (Jay's wife Helen)

There seem to be a number of unbelievable overtones in this arrangement/performace. From 4:30 all the way through to 6:00 there seems to be a high Eb ringing at the top. Is that an overtone, or are the tenors clear up there? Tremendous no matter which!

I take this note, in the video of 617.5 Hz, it's not a whistle register for me, but it's uncomfortable for me, maybe because my bottom note is C#/Db 69.3 Hz. I think, I'm an average bass. This is definitely not overtone.
      Translation may not be accurate.

This is not a question of if someone is capable of singing that note or not. There are a lot of singers in that chorus that can sing that Eb with ease.
In this video though, they are not, as it is not written in the sheet music. I can guarantee you that.
Those are nothing else but pure overtones.

While it does not detract at all from the powerhouse that is this piece or this performance by an incredible group you can clearly hear the voice responsible for the clear high Eb again when it’s introduced (a little shakily) at 6:47. Same exact voice. Overtones exist, but not the ones you’re pointing out.

PLEASE record this! I want to be able to listen to this over and over again. Seriously this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Every time I watch this vid it makes me cry. Jay Giallombardo, you are a genius! (Eric Whitacre meets Hubert Parry meets the Beach Boys??) ;-)
