Diction, blend, breath, phrasing, sensitive entrances, dynamics, expression, and stunning quality of sound masterfully crafted by this superb conductor. What a joy to hear this awesome chorale performing this Morten Lauridsen masterpiece. Thank you for posting this wonderful gift.
Lauridsen has a singular gift: he writes choral pieces which an average choir can make sound great - and which they love to sing -; and a great choir can make transcendent.
Absolutely true, when put it in the hands of a great choir to interpret and shape you end up with an exquisite and profound masterpiece. I don't have a favourite, Lux Aeterna, Magnum Mysterium or Seal Lullaby, etc. are all favourites. I've sung them and listened to them, and I find it hard to hold back the tears every time, something universal happens beyond our usual existence.
My God this is simply extraordinary. I have never, ever heard such exquisite pianissimos in any chorus. Seamless phrasing and consistent dynamics. Wonderful, incredible, magnificent. Bravo.
It’s so so difficult to pick a favourite score from the many great works of Morten Lauridsen but this peace has to be right up there and this rendition is so beautifully preformed
This is it for me. With a good choir, live, I always cry-and I am so NOT a crier! My husband, Eric, has sung nearly 30 years with The Mapleton Chorale. It's a 120 voice community choir requiring auditions, dues, performance attire they buy themselves, tours they pay all costs for, and memorized music prior to performances. They are magnificent. They have had many directors over the years, and seem to get better with each one. This choir from tiny Mapleton, Utah, was invited to perform a tribute concert for the 9/11 families and first responders at The Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall in 2011. Sadly, they have no recordings, as they can't afford licensing fees. All their concerts are free to the public, and they have sung many Lauridsen pieces, always buying all the sheet music for each member of the choir with their dues. As one of their sopranos lay dying in her bed at home, the select group of 16 voices, including Eric, were invited to sing her to heaven. They sang a couple of hymns, and Lauridsen's, Sure On This Shining Night.
I love the joy in the face of the conductor, the balance between male and female voices; the peaceful feeling of the song. Beautiful - I love it all! Thanks!
Remembering my childhood and those younger years, of me playing endless in my back garden. Oh how i long to be young once again to walk among the flowers of my garden and to hear the sound of mother calling me saying come in and wash your hands teas ready ❤
Thank you, Grant, your leadership shapes as always. Thank you, Master Chorale, you give new life each time you sing. Thank you, Lauridsen, for giving us the beauty of this song crafted onto the words of James Agee. I too “weep for wonder” at this miracle of the voice and music.
Wonderful: basses build rich foundation, tenors beautiful head tone, altos lovely mellow, sopranos reach the heavenly. All praise to composer. And the marvelous director. And the lyrical pianist.
The social distancing practiced by the choir during this pandemic-era recording lends a surprising and otherwordly cohesiveness and attentiveness to this performance that is simply unique. It seems the music proved to be a place to be "alone together."
The musical nuances and magnificent shaping of the phrases are truly astonishing! This is one of my favorite pieces as it is and the LAMC performed this so brilliantly! Many people think the conductor does "nothing"...well here's an example of what a master at work can do with a choir! Kudos to the accompanist too!
I've heard this performed dozens of times (sung it myself as well) and you are so right, the musical nuances and phrasing are what struck me. This performance knocked me off my chair. It's incredible. And yes, it's a testimony to incredibly competent, skilled conducting.
The director is the composer; he conveys his vision and expression of the poet’s words so beautifully, and the singers respond in kind. This is how I imagine it, a perfect marriage of the arts.
The perfection of voices from LAMC meet the beauty of Lauridsen's masterpiece, shaped by the best choral conductor in the country and magnified by the pure, soaring acoustic of Walt Disney Hall. No one should miss the opportunity to hear the Chorale sing live in its splendid home in Los Angeles. An unforgettable experience.
So beautiful ✨This ensemble has something very special-- ethereal, heavenly. First heard your recording of O Magnum Mysterium many years ago; stunning. Big fan ever since. Bravo! 👏
This is lovely. The tempo is slower than average, but it's perfect for this hall. Great blend, and great restraint by the sopranos letting the upper notes sparkle instead of overpowering the rest of the choir.
This is really beautiful however what springs to mind is that the composer and choir are American however they seem to be singing with British accents. Is there a reason for this?
Interesting observation, because, to my (UK-based) ear, they sound very American, with plenty of rhotic Rs scattered throughout. Maybe they're going for something more Transatlantic haha? The sound and interpretation are fabulous, which is what matters in the end, I suppose!
the piano accompaniment is too loud. It is a pity that the precious sound of the choir cannot be heard in all its glory. This musical piece is gorgeous ❣
@@d.macrae461 I don't think the piano was too loud. I think it belongs in the foreground in this piece more often than just the interludes. I think this is especially true for the section starting at 4:25.

True, this is stunning. I'm almost in tears.

Peace, not piece. Absolutely correct x
Outstanding, transcendent, holy. Stops you in your tracks and all else recedes.
The best performance live or recorded.
This is such a beautiful piece of music. I listen to it over and over...
Simply Exquisite! The loveliest YT recording I have heard of this stunning work. Thank you all!

The indelible power of the human voice, solo and in association: a radiant vibration and communion.

The, “ I weep alone of shadows on the stars” was my absolute favorite part to sing
I had the pleasure of performing this song with the California all state honor choir. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had.
Thank you for keeping Salamunovich’s legacy alive
Absolutely gorgeous performance. Thank you!
Voices from Heaven...on earth🤩
The best performace ever! Smooth, sweet, lovely and very espressive. Comgratulations (to the composer as well)!
One of the best performances of this I’ve ever heard! Such beautiful conducting and singing! Warmth of sound and beautiful soulful execution!!

Gorgeous. One of the best things about Mr Lauridsen’s writing his is ability to make each phrase speak lyricism and beauty.
Great piece for the winter solstice.
Or the summer!
A truly stunning performance!
I love this music ❤
Awesome, one of the best live performances by far!

Magnificent ✨ i can understand the audience's slow beginning to their applause; they didn't want to intrude on the beauty of this performance.
Masterful interpretation of this composition by my favorite modern choral composer. Beautifully nuanced, truly inspiring. Thanks!
Thank you for this sparkling and beautiful performance.
Wow, I hope everyone is so proud of this, absolutely stunning🎶Bravo
I feel the best part at 3:33. thank you Morten and LA Master Chorale
I've not found a better performance of this on the net yet, and I've looked. Fantastic.
Absolutely gorgeous, and brilliantly performed.
Exquisite!
Stunning! I was able to sing this in John Newell's choral group, Quoddy Voices a few years ago.
Just enormously beatiful.
Kudos to everyone there on the stage!
Just wonderful,-attention paid to every detail. Perfect. Thank you allX
Beyond lovely singing. "Wow!" and "you all inspire me to be a better singer!" From Maine USA.
Just listened to this piece sung by Grant Gershwin and his wife. I can’t stop watching it!
I meant to say Grant Gershon.
Absolutely stunning! Thank you.
Absolutely phenomenal performance. This takes me back to high school. 💚
Pure perfection!
Thank you, thank you
Goosebumps!
It is impossible to not like any version of this piece of music. Would be wonderful for the entire James Agee poem to be put to music like this.
This was a joy to hear again! Such excellent clarity of singing.
美しい旋律、歌声に心を奪われました。そして心が浄化されました。素晴らしい😂

This piece really needs to be orchestrated for orchestra and large chorus...it's long overdue. Also, an organ accompaniment would be great!
...has a Beethoven-like Pastoral quality to it like the 6th Symphony, Piano Sonata #15 or the Kyrie from the Missa Solemnis.
Beautiful!
