I prefer to open the strike plate up with a special grinding tool I have vs making additional mortises. Looks better and works the same. Typically takes me 30 seconds

Punch Point Tools, LLC what I'm saying is, you moved the strike plate down, what happens if the new Top hole is in the center of the latch hole? Meaning the center of the big hole. The bottom hole has a new spot with plenty of wood. The new top hole location is in the middle or top edge if the big hole, nothing there. Do you get a longer screw so it has meat?
I would recommend changing the size of you strike plate to a larger one that you don't have to try to plug the hole or try using a longer screw which will not be secure. something like this one. www.build.com/maxgrade-maxasa/s807110. Please let me know if that would help.
im having the same issue. I'm going to fill the big hole with sized wood cuts and glue.. let it dry and then make the new hole and screw in the strike plate.
