- Bought this video/tape on eBay quite a few years ago and thought it was time to share (we're not getting any younger, NFL Films). So, for the "old" fans that are still around, and for the current fans that are just curious, here's what your Minnesota Vikings were doing thirty-eight years ago...that's assuming TH-cam allows me to keep it posted.
1978 was the final year of the old Vikings team. It was the final season for Carl Eller. This was the team that made four SB appearances. The Vikings haven't been back since.
Here is something NO ONE ever mentions. The Vikings beat Dallas 21-10 on October 26th. It was the FIRST EVER Thursday night football game. It was the only game Minnesota didn't commit a turnover all season. I live in Vegas and the headline in the sports page read, "Vikings, Tarkenton riddle Cowboys 21-10. Those were great times because you really appreciated a game on TV, unlike today when all the games are on.
Tark was gone after 78 as well
I don't watch sports anymore..I have more important things to do these days..but as I kid I loved the 1970's Vikings!

That was really a weird season. Fran was coming back from that broken leg he had the previous season. I entered High School and played football myself. Will never forget those games with Dallas. The offense seemed futuristic that night with all that movement. That game with the packers in green bay was epic. I listened to it on a radio that barely got the station. I was dying at every play especially when they went into OT. 10-10 tie. Lastly, that New Year Eve game with the Rams. Fran's last game. I was depressed after that game. They always beat the Rams but in that game Fran had a couple few interceptions. He wasn't the same as in previous seasons. This was the end of their glorious years sadly
And they couldn't beat the San Diego Chargers, a warm weather team, in cold weather conditions and in a style of game that was more up the Vikings' alley. About the only thing that season that held true to form for that Vikings team was that they couldn't beat the Oakland Raiders, who'd crushed them in Super Bowl XI and had beaten them in 1977, though that was after Fran Tarkenton's leg injury.
Grew up with these Vikings teams. Bittersweet, got to the pinnacle many times, only to be pushed off. It sure was good being a Vikes fan in the 70's.

I was a Vikings fan back in the 60's and 70's. I actually watched most of these games. Yes, that was the "Superbowl Era" for them. The Vikings haven't been back to the Big Game since then. Thanks for posting these videos.

Bud Grant never “ adjusted “ in all 4 of those SB losses! We got ran over !!!! Fred Cox also was as sorry as any kicker from any era ! He was Bud’s fishing /hunting pal all those years 😳. Matt Blair belongs in The NFL Hall of Fame ! ⭐️. It was great being a kid in this time 🌈

Oh yeah! I was 8 in 1978 and really enjoying watching some Vikings football games. I remember my dad flipping out when the Bucs beat the Vikings and all happy when the Vikes beat the Bucs 2-3 weeks later.
Bob tucker was a very underrated TE for much of his career. Played on alot of poor giants teams and came to minny after the vikes were legit super bowl contenders. But he had great hands and had a wonderful knack for getting open.
One interesting fact is that Bob Tucker was the NFC's leading receiver in 1971, and his QB that year was none other than Fran Tarkenton, so by acquiring Tucker, they reunited him with his old Giant QB.
Yes, Bob Tucker actually had some of the best TE statistics in the era he played. Somehow he made 0 Pro Bowls and received virtually no All-Pro honors during a career where he often was in the top 4 or 5 in the NFL as far as TE statistics (yards, receptions).

Spent the early 70s as a grade schooler in suburban Chicago, but got to see the Vikes at Soldier Field and at Country Stadium. Moved back to Minnesota by the time I started junior high and this was the season I made it to my one and only game at the Met. Of course it had to be their first loss to the Bucs...ever. Took me better than 30 years to realize the famous Neil O’Donoghue NFL folly clip happened at that game.
Interesting that they didn't cover the critical rematch with Green Bay that ended in a tie, giving the Vikings the tie breaker. Rashad's tying TD came even later than the one against the Eagles, although both were under two minutes left in back to back weeks.
I remember this as a very exciting year. With no running game, the Vikings passed probably 75% of the time with Rickey Young leading the league with 88 catches. Great offensive threats.

Tarkenton's last year. He threw for the most yards in the NFL this season, but also threw the most interceptions.
Lot of those interception where form underthrown balls. Just didn't have the arm, but kept trying to throw long.
I've recently watched all 3 1978 complete game videos available on the Vikings' official TH-cam Channel (1st 2 Monday night games, against Broncos & Bears, & the famous Eagles game). It was a major problem, up until at least the Bears game, so, early in the season, as the announcers confirmed, that Rashad and White were dropping many passes. I do think some of the completion percentage and possibly interception issues were due to the receivers starting out slow (they picked it up by the end of the season).

@@lloydkline1518 Foreman had nagging leg problems but never a full blown knee injury. More so than the departure of Ed White, his downfall came as a result of weight gain. Still have the old Vikings report where he himself attests to it.

Foreman's last decent year as he was getting worn down from so many touches. tarkenton threw for his most yardage in a season, but it took career highs in attempts to do it and he threw 32 interceptions! Defense was not close to being as good as the old Purple Gang was. But, I'm still a fan to this day.

1978 was an odd year for the Vikings. The couldn't beat the Los Angeles Rams, who they always beat when it counted, beat the Dallas Cowboys, who always seemed to beat them, and did so in front of a national audience, had trouble beating warm weather teams in their place when it got cold (the San Diego Chargers beat them 13-7 at a frozen Met in mid-November), and even lost a game in which they were the beneficiaries of one of the most infamous blunders in NFL history (Neil O'Donohue's attempted kick of a ball that was snapped 20 yards over his head on a FG attempt). About the only thing that seemed to hold to form was that they still couldn't beat the Oakland Raiders, who had blown them out in Super Bowl XI and then in the 1977 season (though Fran Tarkenton had suffered his leg injury by that time).
That game with the Rams, they could never win at Metropolitan Stadium, they won in their final appearance there 34-17
My Dad was a Cowboys fan...my older Bro a Raiders fan...1970s watching together...at home...fun times...I rooted for the Vikings to piss them off...they always got the last laugh
I have a certain affinity for this team, which was the last for that great era. The reason was that it was obvious they were on the way out, they had a difficult time with their o-line, and had no running game. The team went as far as Fran's arm could take them. The guys somehow managed to squeak out a division title against most odds.
Yeah, even though a few players remained through 1979. This was pretty much the end of the Purple People Eaters era.

Two stories of the 1978 season: Ed White's holdout (he was eventually traded to San Diego) decimated the o-line, while Chuck Foreman, after five fabulous seasons, could take no more pounding. Between Tarkenton's ingenuity and the crapfest that was the NFC Central, the Vikings somehow sneaked into the postseason. But this was, officially, the end of the Vikings' Super Bowl years.

Fran had an awful final season throwing 24 tds and 32 ints
Sort of, he did throw for a bunch of yards and that last second TD to Rashad in the Eagles and as well as Packers game for the win and tie. Although his comeback was considered succesfull, he did hurt the team with his interceptions. In the playoff game at LA, the Vikings unbelievably moved the ball with total ease at first. They actually had the Rams on the ropes with a blocked punt, the very next play, Fran throws the int. I noticed that year he insisted on going long, all the db's had to do was wait for his underthrown ball....easy pick.
There was a 3rd, huge story: the benching, and trading , of Alan Page.

I remember the 77 and 78 Vikes. Watched them lose at Dallas with my dad on New Years Day 1978 in a playoff game.
Wow, what's shown of the Dallas game here doesn't even tell half the story. The Vikings confounded the Super Bowl champs and Tom Landry (you know, that guy who birthed the modern offense) all night. One thing the Vikings did in that game was huddle up with 13-14 players, with the extras running off the field before the snap. By the next season, the NFL made that illegal. Hell, it might have happened by the next week.

For me, it would seem obvious that the most heartbreaking Vikings seasons, of, quite frankly, either the Van Brocklin or Grant eras, are first, the four Super Bowl loss, seasons, but then, after that, it's an interesting decision. I tend to agree with several commentators on the 1970 highlights video that that Divisional Playoff loss to the 49ers was the franchise's biggest loss, through the 70s, after the 4 Super Bowls, a bigger loss than any of the other non-Super Bowl playoff losses, during the entire decade of the 70s.
However, see below, why I think ultimately, this 1978 Divisional Playoff loss against the Rams, may be the most heartbreaking season-ending loss for the team, for the entire 70s decade, except for the Super Bowl losses.
There's something intangible, that really appeals to me, about this 1978 team. I've recently watched, in their entirety, the full game rebroadcast videos, available on the Vikings' official TH-cam channel, of 3 1978 games: the week 2 Monday Night game against Denver, the week 4 Monday night game against Chicago, and the famous December Eagles game.
I think, possibly more than any of the other, 2nd Tarkenton stint with the team, seasons (1972-1978), this 1978 team had that intangible aura of integrity, class, maturity, self-discipline, confidence, talent, ability, self-assuredness, and general overall admirability.
Also, it would have been great for Fran to go out with another, if not Super Bowl victory, at least Super Bowl appearance. The Monday Night commentators even at one point mentioned that finally getting a Super Bowl win was definitely Fran's goal, entering the 1978 season (if I remember, correctly).
And this video shows Fran telling (apparently) Irv Cross, his interviewer, that he was then at the top of his game, really playing at a level never either reached or excelled, any other time in his career.
And Bud, I've frequently seen quoted as saying Fran retired when he still had a fair amount of "gas in the tank."
To put forward some additional points, regarding the 1978 season, I just think it was either just too bad, if not an outright mistake, presumably on Bud's part, with respect to the 1978 season, to both:
(1) bench (make 2nd string, except on holding for kicks, like he'd done for so long, for the team and was allowed to continue to do) Paul Krause, one of my favorite, not only Vikings, but overall NFL safeties and players, of all time, a Hall of Famer who seemed to have full control over his body and be a master of his position, both intercepting and tackling
(2) trade away Alan Page midway in the season; this not only due to the fact Page must have played pretty well after that, for the Bears, for them to keep him all the way through the 1981 season, but because it seemed like, to me, Page was playing, still, pretty great football, that whole 1978 season-to-date, with the Vikings, from my watching him perform in both of those early-season, 1978, Monday Night games, available in their entirety, on the Vikings' official TH-cam channel.
One other thing, although I get this impression (I admit I may not have enough to go on) that Jeff Siemon was disappointing, in my opinion, from at least 1972-1974 (certainly becoming great by 1975 or 1976), it's great to watch Siemon play, again, from at least 1976, if not 1975, and for him to have been voted, per this video (if I remember, correctly), the 1978 MVP of the entire Vikings team, by the team.
Finally, one might also say it's disappointing, in 1978, to see Stu Voigt replaced as a starter, at tight end, by Bob Tucker, but, watching the 3 1978 games, once again, available in their entirety on the Vikings' official TH-cam channel, Tucker was actually phenomenal; an outstanding player, very fun, in my opinion, to watch play, in 1978.
Paul Bloede Excellent story on the Vikings sir. As a Bears fan, I can relate to some successful years in the 1980s just like the Vikings had in the 1970s. They had Bud Grant just as the Bears had Mike Ditka. I admire them both as legendary coaches but somehow didn't have the same fire as Vince Lombardi. Had they done so, the Vikings would have been the dynasty of the 1970s instead of the Steelers and the Bears the dynasty of the 1980s instead of the 49ers. I believe it could have been quite possible.
Jeff Siemon was one of my favorite of this 70's Vikings outstanding defense. A fan from Canada.

Yes, agree . Not nessesarily bad journalism though. It's just that these " team year" videos are more of an infomercial for the respective team. If you watch one of these shows with a 1-13 team, you'd swear they where amongst the best of teams .

Its hard to put Fran Tarkenton in a class if great QBs. We know he was great, but the Vikings never quite used his skills correctly all the time. If thw Vikes had a Ricky Young, Sammy White, and Amahd Rashad. In the early 70's, they may have had a Lombardi. Those were very good teams, but their best team of 1975 was painfully defeated in tge "Hail Mary" game. Not a Viking fan, but I sure respected them and their nrand of Football.
For some reason I see similarities between Tarkenton in this video and LeBron James. Both playing superbly in their late 30s after many years. Defying logic. Both being hated on for losing in the championship a lot. (Of course LeBron has 4 more wins than Fran).

Vikes were always loaded w/ talented pro bowl players, their one weakness was QB , Tarkenton had a weak arm, panicked vs a good pass rush and could not pass from the pocket consistently.
+ t a Really? Fran (all of of 5'10 180lbs) played the game when you could murder the QB without a penalty. The receivers were grabbed and pushed constantly- no flag. He is #11 all time in total passing yardage. Today's football is watered down BS. Do you think Peyton Manning could throw for 71,000 yards in the '70s? Not a chance. And Tom Brady would've been in a wheel chair after a few seasons.

I passed gas a lot during the 1978 season and went to all the home Vikings games. Those were glorious years and I remember 1978 because that was the year I had an intestinal problem and passed gas constantly

I don't get the love for Tarkenton for his 1978 season in this video and from the comments below, cause Tarkenton frankly stunk. His QB rating was the 3rd lowest ever for his career, his INT% was one of the worst, his TD% was below average, his yards per attempt and per completion were below average, and his completion% about the same as it had been in his 2nd stint with the Vikings. Sure, he threw for a bunch of yards, but what do you expect when you're throwing the ball all the time? I watched the games back then, and he repeatedly threw the ball into double and triple coverage, which explains why he led the NFL in INT's. His judgement was atrocious. It was time for him to retire. For him to say that that he was playing better than he had ever played was just incredible ignorance.
My God, I just relived my Life! In 2019, it will be my 49th season as a VIKING! I've abused my two kids, & now my 3 grandkids as well; by making them all wear Vikings pajamas year round... This is the last season I'll give Minnesota. If we have a season like last year's, I'm divorcing them. Hell, I'll even send a copy of my intentions of Divorce to the Organization, & owner too. You know how many sicknesses I had lie through just to get home & see them on TV?

The year the Rams finally beat the Vikings in the playoffs was quite memorable. In fact they swept them, away and at home. I was watching the away game on TV and remember the Rams opening up a can of whoopass on the Vikes, who then had to bring in sub Tommy Kramer in the 4th, who was hit hard by Jim Youngblood and had convulsions on the field.
Holly cow, I remember that. Hadn't thought about that until you mentioned it. Daryle Stingly was still fresh on everyone's mind.

I wonder if there are any highlights anywhere of the Viking win over Denver, 12-9, in OT. I remember it vaguely, but I'm curious, since Denver was the defending AFC champ...
I remember that game, it's actually available in full broadcast. They had a new punter , Mike Wood. He had the weirdest blocked punt. Lyle Alzado rushed him and he kicked the ball in a bee line and smacked Alzado. It was like a pitcher trying to bean the hitter. The next day Mike Wood was gone and they brought in Greg Coleman.

Thanks, I'll look for it later. BTW, one more story line had to be the placement of Alan Page on waivers in mid-season. The team composition was falling apart, and starting to become unrecognizable..
bud cared more about killing innocent critters then watch tons of film.. Stram, Noll, Shula and Madden who were ALL 24/7 head coaches, Bud was not. Hence the 4 sb's blowouts, Vastly outcoached

The only reason why the Minnesota Vikings made the playoffs was because the Green Bay Packers, after going 7-2 in Week 9, took a shit the rest of the 1978 Season.
Had the Packers at least won 3 of those last 7 games, the NFC Central Division would have been theirs.

Ray Scott replaces Pat Summerall as the Viking team video narrator. Pat had become too much of a national football voice to do these things anymore, I guess..

The vikes didn't win to get in the playoffs. They lost their last 2 games, and so did the Packers, so minnesota got in

The Vikings are in Los Angeles at the introduction. The Rams decided to wear white at home for the 1978 NFC Divisional Playoff game. The Rams tried to do what other teams would do if the Cowboys came to town, by making them wear their dark jerseys, as it was considered bad luck for the Cowboys to wear their blue jerseys. The Rams took it a step further by doing it to the Vikings, since they had bad playoff moments with them. The Rams won; however, the next week against Dallas in the NFC Championship, the curse of the blue jerseys didn’t work as Dallas won and went to Super Bowl XIII.

The sad thing is the Vikings went from being outdoor warriors to not being able to win a game outdoors at all by the early 80s. Talk about a franchise flushing their history and character down the toilet!!! Who saw that coming? The Minnesota Vikings of all teams became dome reliant. It just sucked the soul out of them. Except for 1987 (yea they choked with Darren Nelson's drop but a great season and playoff run anyway) they have choked more times than a 90 year old eating chicken wings. Nowadays they just look ridiculous running around in their purple pants. When and if they ever do win a SuperBowl it will just be the law of averages at this point. I mean it's been 60 years now and counting guys. The two losingest teams in NFL history, teams the Vikings used to look down on and ridicule the Buccaneers and Saints have their SuperBowl rings so who really cares anymore. It's just too late fellas.

@@gregpettis1113It was fourth down and four yards to go for a first down at the Redskins six yard line with :56 seconds left on the clock. Nelson first and foremost should have concentrated on just catching the ball. He didn't need to score on the play. The Vikings would have had first and goal at the one yard line with probably around :45 seconds left. I'm not sure if they had any timeouts left but there was enough time to take four shots in the end zone via passing the ball. They could have rolled out Wilson on each play and if he had a clear shot he could have also run it in. Don't forget if they scored a touchdown it only would have tied the game at 17-17 and forced overtime. But we'll never know. I loved that 87 team. Remember the Thanksgiving win vs. the Cowboys? The playoff win against a good Saints team? The playoff win against what was probably the best 49er team during their dynasty? I grew up in New Jersey as a Red Sox & Vikings fan. In 1986 I had to live through the Bill Buckner game and then a year later the Nelson drop game. For both games I was 17-18 years old and already scarred for life.

TBF the Vikings getting “soft” in the early 80s May have had more to do with the law of averages catching up with them as it did

What did suck was the Burnsie era Vikings could raise their game to beat good teams like Chicago

I feel sorry for Vikings fans - so many great players/teams ruined by shi t QB's. In my HUMBLEST opinion, the best QB Vike's ever had was Tommy - I'll have another - Kramer. If it weren't for the Detroit Lions... oh NEVER MIND, y'all know the Vikings are cursed. Farve, Rodgers, HALL of FAME QB's have busted your hole so many times over the years while you were saddled w/ Tark, Cuozzo, Kapp, Berry, Lee, Wilson,Cunningham.... now you have the savoir, Kirkie boy Cousins -- good luck w/ that. Oh, great move signing old man Favre, just in time for him to throw another bad pass/interception/pick 6 for the other team. Here's my advice, Trade every draft pick next year for Andrew Luck, he'll come cheap bc he's always hurt, but he can be had. Forget Kirk Cuzzo, he's a loser like TARK.

The Vike's that went to the Super Bowls w/ Fran were loaded w/ all-pro's and Hall of famers. The only excuse is Tark not playing well, EVER, in a SB game.
EDIT: In fact, the Vikings didn't have a decent THROWER until Tommy SHOT OF GIN Kramer. Vikings wasted a lot of good years/teams on some really shitty QB's, not just Fran.
