Starring Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona and Go Ah-sung, it tells the story of a monster that kidnaps a man's daughter, and his attempts to rescue her."

Bong Joon-ho's movies are so wonderfully odd in their humor. I can't get this feeling from a lot of modern directors. That funeral scene with the photographers in the gym is peak Bong slapstick tragicomedy.
Interestingly what a lot of people don't get is the movie's ending and how metaphorical it was.The ending symbolised the ignorance of common citizens (maybe specifically at koreans since its based on a true incident) about such envirnmentaly hazardous behaviour. It is is shown time to time and even the characters are written so. For example it is shown even in beginning how the news was showing how a guy was found dead near river but they skipped it.
The little daughter actress went on to have a respectable career. 22 films and series after this. She did a phenomenal job as the lead in the Japan occupation film 'Resistance'. Name Ko Ah-sung.
Fyi: The American actor who plays the scientist who orders the chemicals dumped down the drain was the late Scott Wilson. Became known for his part in the 60's film, "In Cold Blood", based on the Truman Capote novel. The novel is given credit for creating the popularity of the true crime genre of books and films. What made the story terrifying is that it, actually, happened.
What did you say,you mean all this big mutation sh*t happened, because of chemical poured into the sea?
Unless I'm thinking of a different film, at the beginning of the movie, chemicals are dumped down a lab drain that flow into the Han River (I believe that's the name of the river). I think there's a scene of fishermen catching a mutated fish, too. Then, later, voila! Amphibious monster! If I'm wrong, somebody correct me, please.
@@keithkurumaji3886 maybe this could be true event,that fish they caught was mutated because of the chemical dumping into the river that happened in actual and so they made it in a movie according to the rumours .🤔
When I was referring to a true event, I was referring to "In Cold Blood", about the murder of a farm family in the Midwest (I believe Kansas), not the "The Host". Sorry for the confusion.

Glad you checked this one out; it still kicks. There were a lot of essays written about it when it came out, especially about the US and the use of agent orange during the Vietnam war and their complete lack of accountability after the fact and just 'leaving'. Lotsa good articles...

However, this is not a simple creature movie.
It could be a little difficult to understand the deep meanings and metaphors of this movie for non-Koreans.
for example, the poison scene is based on the real event, so-called as 'McFarland case' in which no one has been punished.
the movie is satirizing the reality that helpless Korean government and Korean people obey to the grandiose power which works sometimes irrationally.
Many people take the protection under the great power for granted and deny to get out of it.
In Korea, the grandiose power that I mean is America. This is quite complicated political thing that just few Americans are might aware of.
Such as, Korean government has no right to control own army in war time on Korean Peninsula, only the U.S military has the right.
Yeah, the movie criticizes American government in some aspect but mostly towards Korean society.
What the man who jumped into the river at the beginning of the movie says is what the director wants to say to Koreans.
"Don't you see that? Why can't you see the obvious darkness?"
Such a good movie. Made me cry, too 😢 I'd like to recommend kdrama Duty After School. It's about aliens that come in forms of spheres, and the military recruits all senior students from every high school to fight.

Sorry if it is shown multiple times to others; my comment is not appearing on my side so I am posting again: Love to see a new reaction of the Host! I also love that you seem to have a good grasp of the background culture, not just in the way Vivian says a few Korean words and so one, but you both just seem to understand at least on a certain level quite naturally. Anyways The Hose had been my favourite Bong Jun-ho film for a while (But that goes to say, I saved the Memories of Murder until the real killer was caught 😂). Side note: dumping formaldehyde in RIver Han is based on a true story that happened I think around 2000
