Steering rod on boat will not go in and out because it is seized up with rust or is stuck because it has not been used in a long time. How to fix frozen steering shaft on boat.

😮 omg! Last time this happened I spent thousands on replacing the steering cable cause I forced the steering wheel until it snapped! So 12 months later I just pulled the boat out again after winter season in the shed. And it’s seised again. Found your video and fixed at home! Thank you so much. Mechanic probably would have charged through the roof to fix this!
And now I realise that this was the problem at the start!
    Thanks mate. 🎉

Great hack! I would say to everyone out there doing this to refrain from clamping anywhere on the piston arm that enters the grease cylinder. This can put dents/knicks in the arm which will rub/damage the o-ring keeping water and debris out of the grease. Which will then lead to more rust and seizing of the steering ram. So just clamp as close to the bolt hole as you can.

@@jdietz8026 My engine is a 2005 115 Merc. I have 2 tips for you: 1. Run your engine often, at least once a month or two and turn your steering while doing that or 2. Change from a cable steering system to a hydraulic system. My steering froze up again about a year plus ago, I guess the grease in the cable section dried up, so I replaced it with a hydraulic system. My steering will never get frozen again!!!

Hey great video. I did this repair using your video after I launched off a beach in NZ with my family on board. We continued the trip. I pre-checked fuel, batteries, radio, navigator, motor tilt, motor start, bilge pump, but did not think of a steering check. Anyway, a couple of additions to your video. Can urn it with a screw driver in the bolt-hole if you don't have vice grips on board. . Also can use a hammer (dive weight) on the screw driver that is in the bolt hole.

@@tailgatetalk no. It's pretty stuck. I thought about torching it a bit to loosen up the build up but my gas line is next to the steering cable. I think I'm going to either replace the cable and rod or hammer it out, clean it and put it back. Either way, a hammer is involved.
