    I have the same setup, unfortunately the Amazon link doesn’t show double cable,only singles, can you point me to a better link,the mercury link doesn’t show anything.

    I have just removed a dual pinion cables by myself, and a few months later I just NOW push the new ones through! Not sure which one turns boat to match steering wheel. I’m thinking I need to put rods through motor, with grease, then connect to steering wheel.... then PRAY.... any suggestions?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you will most likely need to clean any old grease out of the motor area before inserting the new steering cables. then connect the system to the steering wheel and you should be good to go.

    I gotta change out my drive shaft oil seal this year. No way it be brave enough to let people watch that. I’d have to bleep our every other word anyway.

    I am in the exact same place you were, Bass boat and not enough room to remove the rods dam. Thinking I might upgrade to hydraulic steering to make install much easier but man is that spendy. I have 175hp so the small cheaper baystar won't work I need to go with the Seastar and its well over a grand. Anyway thanks for sharing your video it helped me know I was screwed.LOL

      I was actually able to put the skeg on a block of wood, loosen the bolts attaching the outboard to the transom and wiggle the rods out of the steering base. Not sure if that would work for you.

    My dual rack and pinion is messed up. I put new steering cable, cleaned out the cylinders where the ends go in, and my steering is still tight. You think it’s the steering helm?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be the cylinder attached to the outboard. This is where the outboard pivots. You can test it by detaching the steering cables and see if the out board swings freely. If I does then the problem is at the helm. I upgraded to hydraulic steering a couple years ago and it is well worth the money.

      @@FloppingCrappie yeah when you take the cables off, the motor moves really free. I’m taking the helm apart right now. Thanks

      @@FloppingCrappie wait, if the cable is off the helm, and the steering wheel turns freely, then what could it be? Or could it still be the helm

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@granthamilton9018 it could be the the gear box that attaches to the helm. That is where my steering went bad.

    • @FloppingCrappie

      I order the entire steering system off of Amazon. it came with a new rack system to install under the helm (attaches to the steering wheel).

  • @salimsopari
    @salimsopari 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    sorry if my question is ignorant, im new to all this. Why would anyone want a double rack and pinion steering? Isn't it alot simpler to have a single cable system?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original steering I took off the boat was a double rack system. Also on larger outboards, a single system may not be able to handle the torque of the propeller when on plane. I have since upgraded to a hydraulic steering system, which I highly recommend over a cable system.

      @salimsopari 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FloppingCrappie yes my boat came with merc 2.5L 200hp and it has double cables, but they are almost seized. I think i might upgrade to hydraulic also

      @@FloppingCrappie yeah that’s what I was thinking about doing but kinda wanna just keep it how it was just because mine is a little older, but it is just awfully stiff and hard to turn right now, and I’m thinking it’s got to be the steering cables probably froze up or just the gears in the helm are corroded so I was just going to replace the cables if I can find them anywhere

    • @FloppingCrappie

    Did you clean off the old silicon? I also have to lift my motor to get it to fit right. Just ran into that problem today.

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      510purple ya, a little bit of wet sanding and some mineral spirits took the silicon off. Honestly, if I were to do it again , and I had the money, I would've put in hydraulic steering.

      @510purple 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flopping Crappie why?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      510purple I don't think I would've had to take the motor of the transom and I have heard the hydraulic systems are easier to steer, especially with larger engines. And ya, I know a 115hp is not that big, but on hole shots the steering wheel likes to jerk to the right pretty hard due the torque.
