The scariest thing about this movie is if her parents weren’t there for her fighting for her she would have basically died.
That's why people always say you need someone to advocate for you when you're ill or in the hospital!

I was pretty lucky going to the Hospital after having a few falls when I was young. The Doctors there conducted a litany of different tests.
After I saw this movie, I realised they were checking for Encephalitis (though, probably not the rare one she had).
@@TiberiusStorm As someone who had his mom or dad by his side 24/7 whenever I was in the hospital from birth to middle school, I can vouch. I will advocate for a neighbor I met a week ago if it means that the doctor has to explain whatever is happening in simple terms for him or her. No one should go through hospitalization alone.

This story needs to be on the news. There are so many people that judge and make fun of those with mental issues. I'm shocked to see so many supportive and heartfelt comments. I'm experiencing symptoms of this disease and most of my family and friends either left my life or were unsupportive.
Please keep fighting. Everything is “fine “ until we pass away or are very ill. I hate it. I’m going thru kind of the same thing

I had Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis at 21 as well. Her story is so...terrifyingly similar to my own. If it had not been for the book, it would have been a lot harder for people around me to understand. The movie made it easy to show people what I had gone through.
It looks horrible and I just watched a movie. I hope you have fully recovered and are okay now.
Thank you for sharing. It is a terrifying disease because the diagnosis is often late. I'm so glad this movie is spreading awareness and bringing it to light. I have done research on NMDA encephalitis and the statistics are scary, it affects mostly women in their adolescent. In saying that it is often misdiagnosed due to the presentations such as self harm, hallucinations and personality disorder. We must keep on fighting and being educated in this particular illness and keep helping young women.

In tears...my nephew was just diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis about 2 wks ago.. He went from one extreme too the next...just like that..my heart breaks for my sister in law (my brother passed 8 yrs ago)seeing my nephew this way is difficult ..I promise too research and understand as much as I can..

I got Anti NMDA receptor autoimmune encephalitis just like Susannah in 2016 when I was 14. This movie excellently displays the symptoms but of course it can never properly replicate the emotional distress of the patient and the parents. So glad this rare life threatening illness will be made more aware of by this movie.

I'm 24, it was rough but i don't remember most of it. I finally recovered from it really great. But instead i got immunodefiency (probably because of the NMDA even though no doctors knows for sure).
I have to ask: did someone found out if your NMDA had a reason? Because mine showed up for no reason at all and it's the same in every article i read about it.
I think it would be interesting some day to know exactly why such weird things can happend to ones body :)

Léonne Thr hi since this year i started to have some serious seizures and i have been to doctors and stuff and They didn t know what exactly it s the problem so They prescripted a tratament that work for a few Weeks until i started having them again.I don t know if it s epilepsia because They happen almost all the time , especially in the morning or evening . I Even broke my leg from one of this seizure recently and now i m recovering.I m so scared , i don t know what it s happening , i don t know how to stop it . I have been searching myself for an answear but i don t know if i might have anti nmda or not
Chloé Weena wow, i'm so sorry to hear that. Whatever it is nevet give up searching until someone founds out what it is. Plenty of doctors told me that i had nothing. They are human and probably used to some people overdramatising i guess. Keep asking doctors and explaining them what you've got.

I never watched much House, but I remember one episode where he spent most of the time trying to free a woman from a collapsed building, even convincing her to let him cut off her leg.
It looked like she would be alright, then she dies all of a sudden. WTF?
He cut off her leg and she got a fat embolism. Happens when bone is exposed. Fatal for many.

This is like my story. Since I was 4 years old I was constantly sick. I was like a waking corpse, I couldn't eat even if I was hungry and the pain in my stomach was unberable. At 7 years old I had 17 kg. The doctors in my country didn't know what I had. They kept saying that I'm doing this to myself because I'm crazy and that in reality I'm healthy. When I was 12 years old a doctor had the idea to try a new treatment and discoverd that I had gastritis, which is very uncommon for a kid so young, but still easy to discover. Now I'm 16 years old and healthy, but not because of the medical sistem. Even if I still feel pain sometimes, I can thank my mother for not giving up on my, fighting for me and supporting me. She's the reason I'm alive today, because unlike my mother, my father completly gave up on me back then.
That sounds like a really tough experience. Im glad youre ok now.

Still got more battles to fight, and they keep coming... ! I don't know why... and it gets wearying, but I'm trying to stay hopeful and keep trusting in God even when it's hard... also for my mum because having your mum always helps. But just for her sake to be well is important not only for me.
But suffering of any kind is hard to go through, have to stay STRONG in the Lord and the POWER of HIS might... on our own we are weak and God wants us to rely on Him... he is our ONLY HOPE.
But it can be a struggle, I imagine where many times it seemed hopeless and you were too weak and tired or even wished it would all be over, if it didnt end

My little boy (3 y.o) Die in a hospital, the doctor doesn't know why my son die, and what's wrong with him. They just let him on Life Support until he die. I hate all of Medical movie / series, because they picture a doctor that's so good and can cure literally any disease. Whereas in the real life, I don't even know the reason why my little boy die. Imagine answering to people asking what caused your son die, and answering it with : I DON'T KNOW.

I loved this film. Hit close to home. My aunt died of brain cancer, R.I.P. , and my sister was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been in a psychiatric hospital twice. I thought of them both greatly during this film. My mom and I were brought to tears several times as a result. Such a powerful film.

It was an unfinished version yall watched from a film festival. This is the finished polished movie. You should watch because the symptoms need to be recognized. I had this disease and the fact that two ladies at a mental clinic had read Suzannah's book saved my life. Suzannah saved my life. Too often this disease, ANTI-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, goes undiagnosed.

This movie means so much too me, I read and watched the book twice, bc my younger cousin had Anti NMDA Receptor Encephalitis as well, and I wanted to learn all I could about this disease. She wasn’t herself, and even though she couldn’t understand everything that was happening to her, she knew she was safe and loved.
This movie saved my life. I wrote letters and made a plan. I called my doctor immediately after the movie. Now that ive been diagnosed i cant believe i have a chancle now of feeling okay and sane, like a normal person. Dont take your mental health for granted, folks. You have no idea what a treasure that is.

I am almost in tears. There are so many things in this that parallel my story it's unbelievable. I suffer from Lyme, so they say. But then others say a million other things. I graduated with a Master's degree in 2010 and then immediately got sick and lost everything. Full body pain, "brain on fire" cognitive dysfunction, memory loss, inability to string sentences together, GI issues. This trailer meant a lot to me.

Imagine what it's like dealing with a problem like this where you desperately need help and you can't help yourself, but you have no one who cares about you to help you. I'm in a situation like that myself, and it often feels hopeless. If this young woman hadn't had people who cared about her to help her get healed, her life would have been over. It's really important to have people who love and care about you. Otherwise when you need someone else's help there's no one you can rely on.

Such an amazing movie! Had me to tears and also made me feel really really really bad for complaining and getting caught up in small and meaningless things. Susannah (the real susannah) must be so strong to not only get better but to share her story as well. Really inspiring.

I also got NMDA this year and fight for almost 1 year. It's all recovered now. Hope everything will be fine for all the patients around world.
Wow did this story hit close to home. 32 yrs. ago I became very ill and no one could figure out what was wrong until I went into a coma and died - was pronounced brain dead but one doctor wouldn't let me go. I too had to relearn everything just like a baby and the road took much longer than this young lady. Since then I've become an advocate for Type 1 diabetes, and involved in helping others with near death experiences. I was so much more fortunate than she, as my situation couldn't get any worse and the doctors and nurses were all my guardian angels and most of all - I was able to truly see who and what I had always had faith in. Going through this I used my voice in meetings, radio shows and newspaper interviews. This was before social media. I've never been better as it made me realize that we are the masters of our thoughts our actions and what we decide to do and with who. Do we wallow in self-pity - sure - but be careful not to remain too long otherwise we may never get out. She was fortunate to have her family - I didn't but this has made me who I am today and if I can I make myself available I do so, as we all deserve love and attention and the help of kind individuals. Thanks.

I watched this intensely. I felt so horrible for what this young New Reporter was going through. It’s people like her, her parents, the few incredible Doctors, who never give up to solve, the impossible? Of course, “Thank you Netflix, for making a truly incredible movie to spread the word.” After, I saw this movie I shared it on FB. I just shared it again.
scary thing about this movie is that it happens every day. People (mostly women) I told that there is nothing wrong with them physically so they diagnose them with mental health issues. Most doctors do this because they couldn't find a physical reason at the time. They don't like looking for the rare crazy 1 in 1 million. This story is similar to what happened to me, I was presenting pain, and having outburts of feeling overwhelming pain randomly. I went to the childrens hospital 15 plus times, and most of the time a doctor looked at my chart, looked at my mom and told her I was making up the pain and looking for attention. they would ask my mom if I had ever been hospitalized for phycological issues, ask if I am a drug addict or ever had issues with drugs, ask if my home life was giving me what I needed. My mom fought so hard for me everytime.
Eventually I saw my 6th specialist, a rheumatologist, He did bloodwork, looked at all the imaging the hospital did for years, and diagnosed me with JRA (juvenal rheumatoid arthritis) and fibromyalgia, we began treatment and I am now feeling almost back to 100 percent
I was told by a couple of my specialist that so many doctors (especially in pediatrics) dont want to look for the uncurable, the rare crazy diseases. They want the simple common easy answer. They don't want to tell their patient that they have something that is only manageable, so they don't look for it. Which is sad, and can even lead some to insanity
I have Lyme Disease for 3 years and was untreated for the first 2. My sister also has it. My brother has Lyme, Bartonella, babesia and more (he is extremely psychotic) we're all suffering and everything in this film just nails my experience and my parents' experience through this 3 year+ crisis. To this day none of us are cured, we are still suffering, but I am glad at least to see a movie that captures so much of a horrific reality that many people go through. From the brainfog, fatigue, to pain, to even the psychotic issues and hallucinations, it all reflects my siblings and I, from our varying symptoms. And the medical system is EXACTLY like that with stuff like this. They don't know what they're doing, they love to transfer you to another hospital so they don't have to deal with you, the tests are unreliable, they keep you there for days, weeks, months... it's a nightmare that I have had to witness myself. I am thankful that something so relatable and so true to reality was made. I hope it might open the eyes of those who don't understand the trauma and horrors some families are put through

I had Anti-NMDA at the age of 21 in 2021. When i just had the symptoms nobody knew what i had (I live in the Netherlands). I couldn’t talk normally and was stuttering a lot. I saw these figures that i know now weren’t there but i saw and had physical contact with them. I still can’t watch this movie because even though i have defeated this sickness at the first 15 minutes i got some flashbacks from memory’s i didn’t knew happened back in the hospital… It was a tough ride, but stil standing strong 💪🏽

I'm so happy a story like this is being told!! The world needs to understand what illness does, to their friends and family. Guess what - an incredibly similar illness exists, but instead of being rare, it's common. And yet no-one is talking about it. It's the most common disease you've never heard of, and it's also one of the most debilitating diseases on the planet. It's called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis - otherwise known as M.E. (or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but that's a terrible name). It robbed me of my life four years ago - I'm writing this from my bed where I've been lying all day, and I pray to God if he exists that our story gets similar attention soon.. Millions of lives are depending on this

I read this book many years ago, I had forgotten about it. I hope the movie is faithful to the writer's level of satisfaction. I recall seeing footage of her taken at the hospital, I think it was for assisting to diagnosing her.

I had just finished watching the film and now Im all in tears. Such a strong message, Thats sometimes it’s enough for one doctor to believe that he could find you when you feel you had lost yourself. An excellent game of Chloe🙏🏽 recommended
This movie actually saved my life. I was having the same symptoms as the girl in the movie and like her they also said that I was schizophrenic and wanted me to send me to a psych ward. My mom fought tooth and nail for me to not be send but I was taken off their custody and send anyway. Luckily I developed a high fever and pressure and they send me to the hospital, where I spend a few weeks. They did every possible test but like here they all came back negative. Until one day a nurse said that my symptoms where like that of a girl from a movie called Brain on fire and the doctor in charge of my case took a chance and told the nurse to give her the link to the movie. After that I was able to get help in another hospital thanks to that nurse.

I was recommended to watch this movie. It reminds me soo much of myself.. one day i woke up and my life changed. A normal girl goes to a girl who cant stop panicking to having ocd. Every doctor i saw let me down and couldnt give me an explanation on whats controlling me. My doctor finally decided to have me tested for P.A.N.D.A.S which is an autoimmune disease caused by strep throat. Sure enough the results came back positive 2 times. I wasnt just going crazy it was antibodies attacking me. The antibiotics unfortunatly didnt work cuz we didnt catch it in time but now there are new inventions such as a blood transfusion that i am looking on getting soon. I will make a video on my channel of my story to hopefully help someone one day. Thank you for this movie and for helping people who need to be saved.

I’m a big late, ok maybe more than a bit but honestly stay strong y got this! Recently I’ve had the same thing I guess I’ve had Lyme for over 8 years and pandas for not to to long. my brother was recently diagnosed with NMDA Encephalitis.. his MRI, EEG, etc were all fine.. the doctors are all clueless at first.. thank God one of the doctor knows about NMDA and finally after 12 days, my brother is diagnosed and getting the right treatment.. Thanks to this movie for raising the awareness.. yes, my brother is lucky because his family (me and our parents) are all determined to help him.. at times like this, family is the only thing that matters the most in the world..
I read this book in one sitting. It was such a glimpse into the importance of patient advocacy. The doctor who believed her and eventually diagnosed correctly was an inspiration, Dr. Souhel Najjar.
The same illness as my brother, but they say he has schizophrenia, knows everything and remembers us, even though he was forgetting about some events, now he takes medications, but he still suffers and suffers with him ...
He lost his job and his dreams because of his injury, he is still in the treatment stage and expensive costs, but this much🥺💔

This film is stunning, watched it a while ago and brought the book because I was so interested. It's an amazing story of an amazing woman who basically changed medical history. Loved this.

@Lucas Sonny Netflix probably bought all the rights to it or something. All I know is that there are quite a lot of "Netflix Originals" that weren't originally on Netflix. Most of them are from other countries are were just pretty small productions, though, so I guess they're original to Netflix in the sense that it's their first big platform? I don't know, really.

I'm almost finished with the book. I get a different vibe from the book than I do the trailer. I'll still want to watch the movie and see how it compares. In any case, Susannah's story is a powerful one. It makes me sad to think that there is an absolute possibility that others like her have been institutionalized or died because of this condition or another rare condition.
I am a psychiatrist recently became an MD , and I really enjoyed this movie. I won't say her case is the only such case. We see so many cases where the Symptoms lie more or less in the gray area between neurological and psychiatric syndromes so whenever we find even 1 or 2 neurological signs in patient we send the patient to neurology rather than admitting and labelling them as a psychiatric patient forever. Although many institutions around the world may not have that level of facilities or doctors so I can understand how such patients can be misdiagnosed so oftenly

Susannah's writing and this film are so important. I got this encephalitis but was seronegative. They put me in lock-up in ER on antipsychotic medication. I have had multiple near death experiences. Mine affected more than my brain- kidneys, spine, connective tissue, liver, everything. I never did get help from MDs on this issue because of protocol. I was bed bound for 8 months and saw the tunnel and the white light. Eventually I sought energy healing treatment and worked with naturopaths and the two working together helped me come back into myself. But it tore apart my finances and my family. I have spoken on a few near death podcasts about the experience. Still looking for my place to tell the complete story.

I know a girl in my area who used to be had the same symptom. The parent had to undergo lots of exorcisms with different religions and dark arts, and most of them said it was a powerful demon inside her. The doctor here has no experience with any of her symptoms. In the end, the girl died.

Amazing movie! The fact that it really happened makes it terrifying, but Chloe's great acting helped spreading the message about this horrible disease.
I've read this book. Damn it was so good and to think it was in the nonfiction section.
Susannah being so vocal about this saved the life someone staying with my old roommate. This girl had been past around a group of "friends" because she was suddenly "struggling" and someone handed her off to my old roommate to watch for a few days. I use quotes here because the "friend" group thought she was going to be diagnosed with a mental illness and were trying to hide it from the girl's family because mental illness is taboo in their culture. This girl was trying to finish her masters degree when suddenly she went from depression to writing and saying things that weren't making sense. It was so bad her supervisor was even concerned, but this "friend" group wanted to hide it. Luckily my old roommate took her in and called me immediately when she realized this girl wasn't just having a hard time. She started hallucinating, couldn't recognize faces, and wouldn't sleep. My old roommate was getting really scared about it and I remembered hearing about Susannah's story. So we spent a few hours talking out what was happening to this girl and my old roommate decided to bring her to the hospital and clearly describe all of her symptoms and what she knew about how it started. The "friend" group came to the hospital and tried to remove the girl and said absolutely abhorrent things to my old roommate. Doctors were quickly able to diagnose the girl with encephalitis and said she would have died if she hadn't gotten treatment. From what I heard, the girl got treatment to get back to a more normal level before going back to her home country. That "friend" group didn't keep up with the girl or try to apologize to my old roommate. Without Susannah's story I'm not sure my old housemate would have brought the girl to the hospital...I would hope she would have, but she definitely would not have presented what happened to doctors with a spin that she thought it was a medical emergency.

I'm just here to say the book Susannah Cahalan wrote about her experiences (and her later reconstruction) of the medical struggles in this movie was really good. Either NY Post gossip journalists are *real journalists* with research, interviewing, narrative. and explanatory chops that could go anywhere, or else she is an impressive individual. It's also important book because it reminds us that there are (in this case auto-immune) diseases that doctors know little about, and that initially look like much more common disorders. Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is much more treatable than typical schizophrenia, but someone has to recognize it.
This is a really enjoyable true life movie and begs the question, how many unfortunate sufferers were sectioned in mental health institutions before this disease was discovered

The movie/book doesn't do true justice to those who have Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis. She experienced one month of madness; I experienced 9 months. When I was first misdiagonsed at the age of 18 no one knew about it and there was no treatment so I suffered permanent brain damage and am still going through treatment and recovering 10 years later. There are many more like me out there and many more worse. She has it relatively easy.
i recommend this. this is a great movie! chloe moretz acting is out of this world. it so great that Netflix has this kind of movie

Haven't watch it yet but planning on it...I was diagnosed with this same autoimmune disease in 2013...its a very different kind of thing to have...mine wasn't as severe as hers but I did go 2yrs. without knowing what was wrong with me until I found a doctor who finally found out exactly what the hell was wrong with me and I thank God every day for that doctor because you do feel like you are going insane...plus it worries your family
