  • Ellen is an unruly, 20-year-old young woman with anorexia nervosa who spent the better part of her teenage years being shepherded through various recovery programs, only to find herself several pounds lighter every time. it’s pretty interesting how i watched this movie before i knew i had a eating disorder (anorexia) and i was like, wow this was a really good movie and i learned a lot... i hope i never have a eating disorder.... 2 years later, I’m now diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, and ironically now i’m watching this film again to gain inspiration due to me being severely depressed (due to COVID-19). People like to blame the media for problems they can't control. Just like the ongoing problem parents have with videogames and violence. There are trigger warnings for a reason in shows like 13 Reasons. No one just randomly decides to kill themselves after watching a show like that. More likely they've had a problem way before they watched the show. The more we censor topics like these, the worse it's gonna get for future generations.

One of my uncles suffered from anorexia. He had always been thin, but after my grandmother died, he stopped eating. The whole family would try everything to get him to eat, and he flatly refused. Finally, one time, part of my family traveled to Mexico. We went into this restaurant where they bring you these huge sizzling grills of steak fajitas with vegetables. No one has their own plate. No one is keeping track of how much everyone is eating. You just grabbed a tortilla, and made your own taco and ate it. Add lemon, salsa and guacamole and eat it. Well, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that my uncle was also eating! He was laughing, talking and eating! He was cured. He is still pretty thin, but he does eat more. My mom cooks for him often.

My sister suffered from anorexia and then bulimia some years ago and she almost died. I suffered a lot, so during this movie I cryed a couple of times because it is so similar to my sister'story.
Please don't follow this path, I'm asking you from my heart, there is so much more in life.
Now my sister has finally overcomed everything and she is happy and at peace with herself.

I’m watching the movie right now. I’m only at the part where she is being examined and doesn’t know how to answer the doctor’s question, and she stutters, and he just says, “A long time ago,” and looks at her. That touched me so much, the doctor is so sweet and understanding, and from what I can tell so far, he has worked with young girls like her before❤️

You know what I hate about people hating this movie? If no one talks about it, is wrong. If someone wants to talk about it, is wrong. Netflix is just showing that not all stories are about happy people, with happy life. This is so important, especially for moms who doesn't know that their child is suffering of this mental illness, they'll see how they actually act and will be able to tell if they're in anorexia or not. And give them the help they need. No matter how Netflix decides to tell the story, is great that finally there is someone (with big influence in ALL the society) talking about it.

Jenlaw BLINK I guarantee you have met or came across someone who has or is suffering with an eating disorder. I had friends confide in me years afterwards about their struggles and when I think back, I had no suspicions. In some of the cases, my friends still looked a healthy weight or even overweight. Just because they don't "look it" doesn't mean they're not consistently starving themselves, purging, or overexercising. The opposite also goes for people who are very skinny. Just because they "look it" doesn't mean they do have an eating disorder.

This movie was really comforting. Dealing with another illness but very relatable. Hitting rock bottom sometimes helps an individual come to the realization that no matter what issues/problems/challenges/opportunities u are facing , life must continue. We must experience that which is negative in order to appreciate that which is positive. And in the end, the "negative" was actually a positive disguised. Only for today!!... Because yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today...well today ...is what u want it to be.
Stay blessed up everybody. One love.

I just diagnosed anorexia from September 2019, and first time I watch this film in my worsttt time (cutting, fasting, restricting), I decided to recovery in this 2 weeks, I slowly eating again.. and found new favourite food = BREAD♥️🥪🥖🥐🥯🍞 ILOVE BREAD NOW!
Now daily I consume 1.100-1.200 calories perday
Eventhough I still didn’t gaining, I feel so proud that today I eat 1.200 calories, IDK I just feel so proud of myself !! And the feeling it’s just the same when losing weight🤔 happy , proud and relieve feeling !
The statement that really got me “Because everyone in this table deserve to live” from Luke ♥️ Thankyou For making this beautiful film , and helping others to start their recovery journey😍

I have to say, I watched this earlier, and I really felt connected to the characters. Not because I've ever been there but because of the sincerity in the performances. I also found it really refreshing to see that they were giving us a movie that, IMO, was more about Ellen's journey to the moment she realized she wanted to live than the actual disease itself.

I defeated anorexia about 6 months ago and I'm glad to see Netflix doing this. People would make fun of me and throw candy at me and say: "Look out! It has sugar" and when I tried to eat ice cream, they'd say: "Are you sure about that? It's just gonna make you fat." So of course I wouldn't eat the ice cream. It's funny how people don't really understand that this is something you can barely control. But in the end I of course got some help and I'm doing pretty fine. But what I hated the most was when trying to gain weight again, people would always hug me to see if I had any fat on my body and it really pissed me off.

It did show how she improved. In the beginning she went in with the mindset that this doctor was going to "fix" her. In the end she walks in with the mindset that she wants to get better and is going to try. How could they have showed her recovery? When healing from a mental illness there are setbacks, relapses, bad days and they happen for the rest of your life. The only way for the movie to show her recovery would be to show her whole life, the movie would have to go on forever. I think the ending was perfect.

The film has great lines for therapy issues, one of which is to stop finding security in things and in others and start to feel safe for ourselves. Because things will always be bad and if we don't know how to stand on our own instead of crutches, we will be falling. Great job.

calla jones no I wasn't discrediting it because it wasn't my experience?! My comment literally doesn't say anything like that?? I'm just saying I hope it steers clear of eating disorder cliches. Like literally everyone who I've ever met thinks anorexia is abt vanity, as if the only thing we care abt is being skinny solely to be pretty, when it's a lot more complicated than that, and the underlying drive is abt CONTROL. I agree that everyone's experiences are different. My comment was about hoping the film wouldn't GENERALISE EATING DISORDERS WITH THE USUAL CLICHES DEPICTED IN MEDIA.

    • @Punk3rGirl
      @Punk3rGirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

you're right my bad. I just know some people are gonna say that it was cliche or that it wasn't an accurate depiction when it is an accurate depiction of THEIR experiences. basically to simplify what I am trying to get across is watch with an open mind and know that this is 2 real sufferers take on eating disorders whether it seems cliche and too much like it is "portrayed in the media" or not. which I really don't understand anyway because the major issue is that ED aren't displayed or educated on at all, that's where people begin to make judgements and assumption when really it is an individualized disease

Ronnie Esdias trust me. If I could eat I would. Do you seriously think I want to be so unhealthy. Eating Disorders are real and they suck. It isn't always about the food. It's trying to run away from your problems. Like growing up when you were abused. A way to hurt yourself because you feel like you are a screw up. Food just so happens to be the one thing we feel like we can control. Telling us to "just eat" won't help. You are building to the stigma and making it hard for people to get help. Eating Disorders are one of the biggest death tolls in mental illnesses. I have been suffering from Bulimia since I was 12. I just started getting help this year and I am now 17. Do you seriously think I wanted to spend my spring break in an residential for my eating disorder? Eating disorders are real. So if you want to say what you said again, do some research first honey.

My mom had anorexia and I didn’t even noticed. It’s sad bc I always told myself “if I see someone struggling with an ED I will try to help them” but when my mom had it it didn’t occur to me that she could be sick; she ate very little and exercised a lot, she even told me she was starting to throw up her food but then he fell pregnant. This movie helped me understand what ppl with ED go through and how it’s not fun or beautiful. My mom could’ve died and I’m so glad she didn’t and she recovered. She gained weight and ig the ED never really went away she’s always talking about how she wants to be skinny and in a way she portrays her thoughts into my sister and I but I try no to say anything about weight or her body bc why should I.

Baka :D I agree ! I'm just hoping that it's not another romantized Version of a Story like this. I don't really expect that anyway, it looks really serious but with humor in it which i think is good. There is just so many young Girls that suffer from this that it would be a shame if they wouldn't tell the Story right :)

I've wanted to watch this movie for a while now. But with my struggles of having an eating disorder, I was afraid to watch it. Last night I watched it for the first time. Because I want to be healthy and willing to fight for it. My eyes were glued to the screen. Near the end when she faints, she and Lucas are looking down from the tree.....when it showed her body, I NEVER felt anything hit me so hard. The fear I had of that's me, if I don't start fighting to defeat this. It scared the shit out of me and you realize skinny will never be enough. It was motivating to get help. But you have to want help and be willing to fight. That's what the movie is about. If you aren't willing to really get healthy at this time DO NOT watch because it is very triggering. But if you are willing to fight then it should motivate you. Prayers for all who are struggling. My heart is with you. ❤️

This film always makes me feel seen! It’s not patronizing and it does not glamorize eating disorders. I’ve always relied on “For The Love Of Nancy” and “Sharing The Secret” to watch a movie that I can relate to when it comes to eating disorders and To The Bone brought something completely new and beautiful.

Keanu is a vampire. That's been confirmed. As for his acting skills, he is one of those actors that's made for select roles. When he's put into the right role. The man shines like no other, but if he goes beyond such roles. Then you can see how out of place he is.
