Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Year Old is the whisky equivalent of a mischievous, peat-soaked terrier: small, energetic, and with a bark that's louder than its bite. This youthful Islay scamp comes charging out of the bottle with all the subtlety of a fireworks display in a library, promising an olfactory adventure as soon as the cork is popped. On the nose, Wee Beastie is like a bonfire on the beach-assuming the beach was also on fire. It's a peat-lover's dream, delivering a smoky punch that could knock out a seasoned firefighter. There's a hint of sea spray too, as if a particularly aggressive wave decided to join the party and brought along some sea-soaked kelp as a plus one. The taste? Imagine licking a piece of driftwood that's been charred by the sun, soaked in the ocean, and then used to stir a pot of spicy chili. It's bold, brash, and unapologetically powerful, with a kick of pepper that'll have you checking if your tongue signed a waiver. And yet, there's a sweet underbelly to this beast-a whisper of vanilla and honey that suggests, despite its ferocious exterior, it might just let you scratch its belly if you ask nicely. The finish is long, like a goodbye at an awkward family gathering. It lingers and lingers, leaving you with a warm, smoky reminder of the beast's presence, as if it's marked its territory right there on your palate. In summary, Ardbeg Wee Beastie is not just a whisky; it's a rite of passage. It's the kind of dram that separates the whisky enthusiasts from the faint of heart, demanding respect and a healthy fear of its peaty prowess. I got a bottle out of curiosity, and wow! Your descriptions are very spot on. The flavors spring out on the tongue like a series of ambushes rather than slowly developing like a parade. The deeper into my glass I got the more I appreciate the scotch. It was heavy on the smoke, then the fruits and spice took over as I continued to drink with the smokiness taking a back seat while still keeping its presence start to finish. I want to try the 10 year next- but may find myself returning to the wee beastie soon as a fun beer for guys nights!

@@thomasbuck303 I should probably rephrase what I wrote. The barbeque-like peppery smoke doesn't necessarily conflict with the sweet sherry, there's just less harmony between the two especially when compared with the 10 year.

Great price too. And of course it was a staple at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games this year. (You guys should come out next year)
Thanks for the shoutout Daniel. Rex, you had it the first time. But just to clarify, my last name is pronounced like your front “Porch” , but with a capital F You,,,,,,,, Magnificent Bastards!
I thought the exact same thing about the fruity sweetness of this Ardbeg. I brought it to a whisky tasting with some of my friends and after having some other Islay whisky options, this one seemed very sweet to me.
For me it's very sweet too. While others that drink it have a weird expression on there face especially while drinking it. What can I say I'm a Islay/ peat/smoky whisky lover. I don't drink anything else anymore than differend kinds of islays, and ocasionally a talisker for example that's not an Islay.
I'm on my 2nd bottle. I much prefer the TEN. And, I agree, the smoke is ashy and reminds me of Talisker 10 where it's leaning away from campfire, and more towards ashtray. I by no means hate the Beastie, and if it weren't for the circumstances of a gift card, dollar for dollar I''ll stick with the TEN when spending my own coin.
I'm drinking the Wee Beastie, right now. For me, It finishes a little weak, is less salty, and lacking some of the earthiness I love in the 10. The smoke from both is campfire, the 10 is more dried, mossy driftwood whereas the Wee Beastie is air-dried firewood burning by a lake. Both have great aromas, but I' not inclined to believe another 5 years would make them taste/smell the same. They seem fundamentally different.
Finally got my hands on this and Rex defined it perfectly when he said its like a kid with too much energy. Its intense and bounces from one side to the other
Could you do a video where you discuss reasons why or why not to buy different styles of the same brand like Ardmore Legacy vs Traditional, Highland 12 vs 18, Jameson Triple vs Caskmates, and why people would want these different variations still from the same brand/distillery/company? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it
I'm just getting into all of this I just went and bought an ardbeg 10 and I love it, I literally just turned 21 I still have to learn alot but what a great scotch to start with
Speaking of pearl clutching, back in the 90's, I was really into the Christian music scene (dc Talk, Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, etc), but since it's wasn't Sandi Patty, my mom labeled it all as "Adam's drug music."
Newsboys was my jam! When the toast has burned And all the milk has turned And Captain Crunch is waving farewell When the Big One finds you May this song remind you That they don't serve breakfast in hell
Haha We had similar upbringings, except my parents were cool with all of those guys. My Mom’s favorite was Janet Pascal (although Sandy Patti was right there too). I remember being in a store asking my parents for a Will Smith CD, they discussed it right there in the store and decided that “we better not.” Looking back it cracks me up.
So I finally pulled the trigger on one of these and I'm honestly underwhelmed. I guess if there wasn't a slight mark up on the Ten (I realize, it's a local problem) it would make a little more sense to me.
I'm looking to try my first Ardbeg, having had my first Islay (Laphroaig 10) and absolutely loving it. What do you recommend, tribe? The 10? 5? Or maybe the Uigeadail, I hear its lovely?
I tried An Oa first, fell in love with it, but got too quickly acclimated to the smokiness and it was just all sweet sherry fruit to me by the bottom half of the bottle. I stepped up to the Uigeadail, and it's incredible. If it weren't for the price, it would be my daily drinker.
I never cared for whiskey. Then one of your video's inspired me to try Laphroaig... I love it. Next, I tried Ardbeg and now I understand that there is Ardbeg, and not Ardbeg.
Just picked up a bottle today and am still forming an opinion. I had a quick sip in my glencairn but definetely need to have more to give my thoughts. I love islays and especially in whiskey sours so I bought this. I would get talisker 10 as I love that but don’t want to put a 70$ bottle on my wallet rn
Little addition on Kilchoman: while they don't put the age directly on the packaging, you can read most things online; Machir Bay and Sanaig I believe were somewhere between 5 and 7 years in age, and on their annual releases like the Loch Gorm it doesn't state an exact age, but from what years the casks used were, giving you a rough estimate of the ages involved. Loch Gorm 2020's youngest casks were I believe 9 years for example. The Islay Barley I believe had a date of distillation and bottling named, which is basically the most accurate statement you could get.
DMB Crash was my first CD. I was 10 years old. My uncle got me that with a Sony Boombox for my birthday. Im so found of the cd, when Im setting up a stereo its the first thing I play to set the levels.
I was searching yesterday to find your review on Wee Beastie and was disappointed to see that you haven't done it, only to wake up today and have a notification of the Wee beastie review. I ain't mad but... are you guys spying on me?
Does anyone know how to ship whisky from europe/germany to texas? Like taxwise and stuff? I have a german made (not sourced whatsoever, completely regional product) whisky , american oak barrel, peated, aged 6 years... terrific whisky, and im curious what daniel and rex have to say about it
I hope to sample that bottle someday. I was also pleased with the nostalgia throwback to early PC games and music choices. One of the strangest things about people of our age was literally LIVING through the time of computers becoming such a huge part of how human beings interact with each other now. O_O
Hey, I like Fancy Dan not changing the voices to be deeper before the "Magnificent Bastard" graphic! But the dancing bear still needs to eat a Glencairn every once in a while. It would be hilarious if Dancing Dan dodges it and it snacks the poor bear instead!!
I was looking at another bottle of ardbeg 10, but this was a fair bit cheaper. bit less mellow, but if i wanted mellow i wouldn't reach for islay, would I? I like it.
I just recently got a couple bottles gifted to me because of a death on the family. Hiram Walker Deluxe 8 year bourbon. I have a one quart and a 4/5 quart decanter size. I can't dig up any info on it has anyone had it before? Have you had it in the vault before?
The Wee Beastie is very smoky, but it doesn't have the intense plastic bandaid that the Ten has. What it does have is a fantastic fruit flavor. It's excellent and I prefer it to the Ten.
having just come back from Islay in the distilery Kilchoman are calling both their Machir bay and Sanaig as having a good proportion of 5 y.o. so I think you've nailed the youth of their core range
Hi guys! I would love to see an episode with top favorite whisk(e)ys Rex likes and one episode with top favorites of Daniel's. Where you explain why those whiskys are your favorites and what you like about them.
We have all been there on the CD ha. I picked nelly country grammar at target and I told my mom he raps about cars and money. I think she knew but still bought it for me.
the 5 year old is $2 cheaper than the 10 at my go to liquor store, probably because it's oversold atm, just doesn't make sense at that price point to me.

Young age, high abv, sweet...marketing team is working hard! That's the trend right now for 25-45 old whisky lovers. This trend is for the next decade
My first ever 45 was Kiss - I Was Made for Loving You.
I can't recall what the b-side was.
Haha, trying to keep disco alive!
Love the 5, very enjoyable. But then again, arent all the Arbegs really good?!
72-73 inside? We're rocking 80 inside over here in AZ because it's almost 120 outside!
I was pleasantly and completely surprised at how much I liked this.
Finally got my hands on this and Rex defined it perfectly when he said its like a kid with too much energy. Its intense and bounces from one side to the other
… which is completely refreshing once in a while
I just bought a bottle. I get heavy salted caramel on the nose. Not sure it’s my favorite Islay, but really enjoying it!
Could you do a video where you discuss reasons why or why not to buy different styles of the same brand like Ardmore Legacy vs Traditional, Highland 12 vs 18, Jameson Triple vs Caskmates,
and why people would want these different variations still from the same brand/distillery/company? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it
Waiting anxiously for the bottles I ordered.....😋 Can’t wait!
I just looked up Cleveland Steamer; that's something I just can't un-see. Thanks Rex.
Yeah, I just did too. Sometimes knowledge just isn't power.
Aaaaarrrrrggg, now I have to wash off my eyeballs with soap🥺🤯🙈
I like this ! Smokey AND sweet ! There is a vibrancy to a young expression like this
New submission for the drinking game: Drink every time Daniel misses the trashcan with the piece of paper.
@@ars721 It's true, I really should have eased her into the hardcore-Christian pop scene lol
Newsboys was my jam!
When the toast has burned
And all the milk has turned
And Captain Crunch is waving farewell
When the Big One finds you
May this song remind you
That they don't serve breakfast in hell
Haha We had similar upbringings, except my parents were cool with all of those guys. My Mom’s favorite was Janet Pascal (although Sandy Patti was right there too). I remember being in a store asking my parents for a Will Smith CD, they discussed it right there in the store and decided that “we better not.” Looking back it cracks me up.
Daniel....king of analogies.
Uigeadial
Corryvrecken. It's fantastic.
I love it. Next, I tried Ardbeg and now I understand that there is Ardbeg, and not Ardbeg.
finally opened my Wee Beastie tonight to taste along with your video. cheers!
Strange question because my go to bourbon is Ezra Brooks, have you guys ever reviewed it? Can't find a single mention nor comment regarding it.
Daniel, the chant from Monty Python is "Pie Iesu Domine. Dona eis requiem"
WHACK!
"I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"
".. .I'm not Dead yet".🐍called Monty
If it helps Daniel, I also played Wheel of Fortune (and Family Feud) on my Windows 3.1 system when I was young, and I am only 28.
Yeah, scotch...this and yesterday's video are the first ones I've watched since you guys came back from the dry week.
I was searching yesterday to find your review on Wee Beastie and was disappointed to see that you haven't done it, only to wake up today and have a notification of the Wee beastie review. I ain't mad but... are you guys spying on me?
I emptyd it and find it better !! I cant find a whiskey that is more smokey and i have tryed to manny becuse of you guys.....
Rex in Hammer pants doing the typewriter dance😂🤣😭
Just grabbed a bottle. $34 and at being half the price of 10, I can't wait to give it a go.
I definitely spent my share of time playing wheel of fortune and Carmen San Diego too!
Seven Cities of Gold and Archon.
Finally got this Beast up here in Ontario. What a kick ass dram!
I got a bottle for my birthday last month. Tastes like grilled hotdogs to me. I kinda like it.
Is Danny boys necklace at the cleaners? Not seen it for a while.
Hey Rex, if Ardbeg 10 is love in a glass, is Ardbeg 5 a bootie call?
Hi guys! I would love to see an episode with top favorite whisk(e)ys Rex likes and one episode with top favorites of Daniel's. Where you explain why those whiskys are your favorites and what you like about them.
Review Balcones Lineage. Newest edition to their core lineup, and it's an American Single Malt
This is my daily driver because of the price, but tastes watered down compared to the OG despite the proof. Daniel calls it "thin", good word for it.
Huh... I was away from TH-cam for a year (had a kid) and suddenly Rex knows stuff about whisky.
We have all been there on the CD ha. I picked nelly country grammar at target and I told my mom he raps about cars and money. I think she knew but still bought it for me.
They're complaining about an inch of snow... Past Dan and Rex are NOT prepared for what happens 5 months from when they recorded this...
Daniel, I'm with you on being old premature...i prefer to think i was just born at the wrong time.
the 5 year old is $2 cheaper than the 10 at my go to liquor store, probably because it's oversold atm, just doesn't make sense at that price point to me.
A whisky I can get my hands on!!
Been waiting for this one!
You guys are nuts!! But I love it!!!🥃
Hi. Did you ever review Aerolite Lyndsay Islay 10 ?
Impulse purchased this last week. Interesting, but I'm no cultest ... yet.
"Putting the robes on and finding the self flagellation equipment."
Oh Rex, as if we aren't constantly in robes, self flagellating.
Yeah, with "tube socks"
