I’m don’t like surprises at all. I definitely don’t want someone else picking my fabrics and projects. I’ll spend my money on what I want to make not on someone else’s ideas. That said, I enjoy watching unboxing videos. They always confirm that I don’t want to subscribe. I also see a few products that I do want to track down to purchase. I love Crystal Heart’s subscription box roulette where she actually makes something with the products in her stacked up boxes. Subscription boxes depend on the person’s personality. For some people they work perfectly, just not for me. Thank you for these unboxing videos because they are fun to watch.
I've been getting Open Gate and Sewers Club since May this year and I LOVE them. I have a ton of fabric and I wanted some interesting projects that had everything included. Sewers Club does one project and has really cool hardware and labels with the projects so far. I love that Open Gate is getting me into a different color way with fabrics I never would have chosen. It's also providing me with gifts to give to people after I make them.
I love your tips.:) I had the Sew Sampler when I first started quilting in 2020, and looked forward to it every month. I stopped after a while, but it’s great for beginners, and you immediately feel included in a quilting community. I have since subscribed to Cotton Cuts, the FQs, then changed to half yards, then to three one-yard cuts. I loved that one! But I stopped again just because your stash builds so quickly! I think precuts are so great for beginners, they aren’t as threatening as a full yard cut. Not subscribed to any now, but they are so much fun! Thanks, Fallon!❤
That is a good point about feeling part of the community! A lot of the sub boxes have Facebook groups where you can get tips, suggestions, and support!
@@sewbeitquilts Yes, during Covid I watched FQS every Friday morning, it was pretty much the bulk of my social life! Helped so much, and learned a lot. I think you helped a lot of people with this discussion.:)
Thank you for this taking the time to do this video!! It truly came at just the right time! I love watching unboxing videos but I have never ordered a subscription box. I have been wondering where to get started. I am definitely going to check out the boxes you have suggested! ❤
As a newish sewist and a new quilter, I did my homework and settled on Open Gate last summer. I subscribed for about 6 or 7 months through the holidays and then recently stopped it. I have 6 table toppers/wall quilts and found it a great way to teach myself quilting which was my goal. I don't need any more projects like that (plus I'm 2 projects behind). So recently, I switched over to CottonCuts PMQ where I signed up to make 2 mystery quilts, one large and one small. I like the slower pace which allows me to change things up and work on other projects that I have lined up, including 3 baby quilts! PS, I have learned that I don't like over 90% of the fabrics that are out there. I guess I am uber picky!
Started the Sew Sampler subscription in June. Have loved every single box. Price is good so don’t mind the splurge I have watched many unboxing of other subscriptions but none appealed enough to order.
I get Primitive Gatherings- comes on even numbered months. A large year long quilt, 2 other quilt project, stitchery project(small), a notion. I like the variety and the fact it is not every month. I still work so I keep up most of the time. I have gotten sew sampler and really liked it but was getting notions and fabric that I was not interested in at all. Open Gate would be a plus for me but it is monthly and maybe next year I will change. If I am not doing the projects I should rethink continuing with subscription.
I get the soap, sampler box, and I enjoy it very much, especially the block of the month. I missed out on last year‘s and was very disappointed to find out the pattern that finally came up for sale was five dollars for each block which made the quilt too expensive to make. So this year I am getting the block of the month with Camille. Lots Kelly’s pattern and absolutely love it. It’s always a good value. I’m excited. Can’t wait to get them each month. I really appreciate your video because I’m going to look into another subscription box. Thank you so much.
I was receiving the Sew Yeah box, and the Open Gates box. I have since downsized to just the Open Gates box. I do get the fat quarter added and the backing for the larger projects.
I have in the past subscribed to a couple of different subscriptions. They were all fat quarter bundles. Great at first. But all from same shop later developed issues. First a patriotic bundle, and every month one or two of the fabrics was a repeat from a previous month, sometimes up to half of the fabric pieces were repeats, and they were repeated multiple times over the year I did this. I also did a civil war era reproduction era subscription and same types of things happened. I also subscribed to their Japanese fabric fat quarter club. First few months were great, beautiful Japanese fabrics. But after that, one or two of the fabrics were Japanese, but none of the rest were. Some of the same fabrics I saw in the civil war bundles. I have lived and traveled in Japan and am familiar with traditional Japanese fabrics. These not only did not look Japanese, but were labeled on any selvage with some of the American fabric companies. Yet were advertised as being authentic imported from Japan fabrics. So, I did not renew my subscriptions and have not done another subscription since then. One rather famous fabric/quilt shop was not sending me my block of the months. I did not actually think too much of it because during the pandemic supplies were hard to come by, a lot of things really delayed. I felt at the time that we needed to be patient. Because many delays were not the business owners fault. However, I figured out friends had been getting all their boxes. I had only got the big box with background and first block that came month 1 and the second months block envelope. I started calling them, sometimes got a response after being told someone would call me back, other times no response. They had clearly lost me in their system somewhere. But all along the monthly fee was coming out. Things were messed up due to pandemic and when I got a call back several times was told they would look into it. At one point I got one more block kit. But by now everyone in the quilt along Facebook group was about 6 months ahead of me. I emailed the shops owner who sent me a very nasty e mail in return saying that I must have received the kits because they would not have charged me if they did not send them. Some nasty things about my integrity were said. I told her to unsubscribe and please return my money. For the kits never sent. She refused and started demanding I send her back what little I had received, plus what she said I received that never arrived. I even asked if they had tracking information we could file with usps. She could not find any. But she demanded I send everything back ( and I would have to pay for shipping). Which was stupid because the blocks I already had I had sewn up. She claimed that the bom had to be paid out in its entirety ( even though I had not gotten them ). Or anything already sent to me must be returned and even then I was not entitled to get any money back. I actually had to go through my bank and about 6 months later got my money back all except for price of the background fabric and the blocks I did get. I still need to do something with those three blocks I made. But I have been gushy about subscriptions since. I recently did a monthly BOM with collage quilter and it went great. Beautiful fabrics. It is turning out gorgeous. So, maybe I will try cotton cuts. Not sure
Great video, thanks. I love watching unboxing videos and I feel like I’ve learned so much about the different boxes that way. I agree with you that the Sew Sampler is great for new quilters and a great value. My only subscription is Open Gate and I love it! I appreciate that Monique has a class for subscribers on the large project. I’ve learned so much completing the projects. One subscription is just enough for me right now. Thanks again for your awesome channel!
Great tips! I have only tried a few of these and have the same thoughts about them. I want to check out the Pineapple one. I haven't heard of that one! Thanks, Fallon!
I have been getting Sew Sampler box since November. I really like it. I also signed up for my first PMQ from Cotton Cuts. I love that it’s already cut up for me and ready to sew. I definitely think that I will sign up for more in the future.
I've been getting Sew Yeah's subscription box since the beginning. I've enjoyed them all, good value and projects. This is the year of precuts... They also, as many shops, have lots of free patterns on their website. They have, now, 3 brick and mortar stores, the main one, Sew Yeah Quilting in Las Vegas, Bearly Threaded Quilting in Soldotna, AK, and Scrap Apple Quilting in St George, UT. They offer service projects throughout the year, and are a great family.
Thank you, Fallon. I just started getting the Open Gate box this month and absolutely loved it. I also started getting the Ginger Quilter box and maybe would have liked it better if it had arrived before the Open Gate box. I’m not sure now, but I’m thinking they were close to the same price. There were two pieces of fabric included for the project that were not my taste at all so I ended up purchasing other fabric to use in place of them. I am doing the project and with my additional fabric, I’m thinking it looks great. The funny thing was that both boxes contained an expanding magnetic pin grabber. Thanks again for explaining the different types of subscription boxes, so helpful for a beginner quilter with no stash.
I do love surprises in the mailbox. I have been disappointed a few times. I just pass off what I know I won't use to other quilty friends. I started off with The Sew Sampler box. I received it for one year when I first started quilting. Then I stopped before year 2 started. I'm glad I did because I wasn't impressed with anything from that year. Then I restarted up again in Dec. 23'. I am so happy with the Dec & Jan boxes. I'm looking forward to the February box. I see a lot of unboxings. What about subscriptions to magazines.? I am subscribed to American Patchwork & Quilting (love it)!
I have tried many different subscriptions and have recently downsized to only 2. Found I was accumulating too many projects, fabrics and notions and did not have the time or space for all of it! Using my stash now which I have plenty of! Thanks Fallon ❤
I just ordered the cotton cuts modern maker quarterly box. I have also had the rebsfabstash box which i loved! Had it been a quarterly box i would still receive it. I love that cotton cuts lets you have timeline options.
I have not started a subscription box. I like the Cotton Cuts that you talked about. I'm going to go to the different websites to price the different ones, and I am like you I don't like surprises.
I think cotton cuts is a good choice! They are fun to at least try. If you don’t love getting a subscription box then the nice thing is you can just cancel!
I used to get tge Pineapple Fabrics box but I found they stacked up and I couldn't use them as quickly as I got them. I prefer to pick my fabric for my money. In all that I think it is an excellent box. I have seen many videos on the Open Gate box and definitely if you like smaller projects it is great.
Hi I enjoy Creative Notions Box, I also have the mystery box from Cotton Cuts. One that I did also try was Mrs. Quilty bought two boxes and I cancelled as it was a bit disappointing. Thank you for sharing! 🪡🧵💫
I love BOMs but not project based boxes. Your video is super interesting and has lots of great tips! I love Sew Sampler for the fabrics, pattern, and BOM. Cotton Cuts PMQ is fun. I also get 5 mystery FQ a month from Sewer's Club curated for my taste. I also am doing FQS Designer Mystery and Chatsworth BOMs.
Thanks for this video. I’m afraid I succumb to too many influences. Lol. I started with The Ginger Quilter and Open Gate. Then I signed up for those two plus the Missouri Star Christmas boxes. (I don’t know which I loved most. Since then I signed up for Cotton Cuts batiks. I’ll keep them coming for a few more months then will change to another style. Then. Bella Rose, new bi-monthly box with two projects and lots of other goodies in their premier box. Whew.
Spot on recommendations! I haven’t tried cotton cuts but it looks fun. It’s hard to gauge if people really enjoy them or if they just have a big affiliate program.
Wonderful info. I’d like a project based one. I’ve gotten sew sampler(fqs) stopped quickly too much of what I not wanted. I got the one off Halloween when I planned to do Halloween project. That worked better
I currently get the sew sampler box and the Mrs quilty box. I like the Mrs. Guilty box because you get 16 fat quarters and a notion but I have noticed that sometimes the fat quarters are a little short by quarter inch and patterns using the entire fat quarter can' t be used. I am researching possibly changing that subscription.
I subscribed to Mrs. Quilty. This box has enough fabric to do a block of the month type project and a smaller project. It always has a notion in it also. The thing about the notions is im new at anything to do with sewing and there has been a couple of notions i had no idea what they were or how to use them. The first few did have what it is and what its used for in the book that comes with it. But my notion this month was not in the book and i have no idea what it is or how to use it If this continues i may consider one of these you mentioned and discontinue my Mrs. Quilty subscrition.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Mrs. Quilty box. It sounds like you like getting that nice variety of products so I would suggest trying the Sew Sampler subscription from the Fat Quarter shop. I think you would like it and I honestly think their notions, patterns, and fabric are a nicer quality.
Hello I don't know but I got the Xmas Christmas calender of fabric. the sunny patch fabrics.and it was an Avent box well I don't know what to do with the line of fabric.its the fabric line is called winter tale art gallery fabric.i don't see much ideas out there if anyone can help.
I get kaleidscope the small box; really like the challenge of making theblocks; but dont like the fact that the project is small, which gives me the added challenge of adding borders. Creative notions is the other box im getting, have only received one so far and liked it, course I also get cotton cuts mystery quilt tree of life and am getting winters glow a block of the month from missouri star, wanted a challenge and got it.
I get the sew sampler. I like it. .. I would like to try open gates. But I am unsure how they bill. I was hoping we could do PayPal, venmo or check? . Do you know if they have other payment options other than just by credit card?
I subscribed to Mrs. Quilty and it was OK but nothing too exciting. Then I also was subscribed to a place in Salina Utah and I cannot remember the name of the company but she did an amazing job with her monthly subscription. Very nice fabric she did tutorials on them, I was impressed. But my stash was overrun then I was hooked up to one in Illinois, but I didn’t really like her fabric choices. They were ultra modern but they were high-quality. She did amazing tutorials. I’m sorry I can’t remember the names.
No, U.K. subscription boxes are very expensive compared to those in the US but international postage from the US is extortionate to get them shipped over.
I don’t buy subscription boxes. I want to pick out my own fabrics and buy them as yardage because I prewash. I prefer to pick out my own projects too. I have bought Jolly boxes for two years, but I don’t plan to buy more because, although the contents are nice, I haven’t liked the projects, and the notions I liked were not enough to justify the cost.
I do not receive any sampler boxes at this time. I have plenty of fabric to use up and I'm working on that. I do like to watch you do the unboxings and sometimes I seek out the special notion that may be featured. Maybe someday I'll need ideas or fabric but for now I'll keep living vicariously through your videos.
That is such a good point! I had a few subscription boxes that I cancelled, but still love. I still tend to watch the unboxing videos from others just to see the fabric, pattern, and notions for ideas!
I’ve just started doing this and at the moment I am in my 4th month of Fat Quarter Shops Monthly Sew Sampler. I am liking it, like you said there are usually two, sometimes 3 patterns, an assortment of either thread, and/or other notions, a block of the month which runs May thru April of the following year. I started in Nov and have been collecting them, I see the ones I missed with my late start last November, are for purchase so if someone wanted to catch up, that’s a nice feature! The best thing is the special discount codes we get in the boxes. One of the projects recently was a quilt and I needed a few more charm packs for how I was going to do it so the discount came in handing. I am liking this one very much!
I tried a Mrs Quilty box offered at half price to entice me to subscribe. Well, I didn't like the project, too curesy, and fabric was okay. I didn't subscribe. Last year I tried the Ginger box, didn't like it because it was a zippered pouch project with vinyl. I don't liked pouches, bags, totes, purses, backpack projects at all. I like pieced projects, but not too many table toppers or wall hangings. I just like normal size quilts. I gave the Ginger box to my SIL who promptly made the project. I didn't get any more boxes. I watch the TH-cam channels with QAL and BOM, these don't interest me at all. Mystery quilt? I don't think so. I think subscription box business' should ask what type of projects they like and don't like, fulfill to that subscriber's tastes. Not detailed, but do you like projects with zippers, handy crafted items, pieced quilts. Then using the same notions and fabrics, give patterns that can be can used. I have watched 2 years of unboxing from all the TH-camrs and the Christmas Advent boxes. I decided to subscribe to Pineapple Fabrics through Keepsake Quilting and have received 2 very pleasantly surprising boxes so far. I also enrolled in Pammie Jane's BOM from Keepsake quilting. It's called "Bloom Where Mew Are Planted". I subscribed because each month is a new piecing technique. The first 3 months are basic piecing, but then applique, then FPP and then...EPP, ending with Dresden plates for a border. An 88"x88" quilt.

I get the sew sampler. It's inexpensive and I usually like the pattern
I really love theirs! I got it for so many years though that I couldn’t keep up with all the notions and projects. It’s a great box though!
I am wondering which ones are beginner friendly.
I feel that the Sew Sampler subscription is a good beginner box.
I've actually been trying to figure out if I want to get a subscription box. I really want to try the Sew Sampler, I just haven't committed to it yet!
I understand! It can be hard to decide! There are so many and then the worry that you won't like it!
Hello I don't know but I got the Xmas Christmas calender of fabric. the sunny patch fabrics.and it was an Avent box well I don't know what to do with the line of fabric.its the fabric line is called winter tale art gallery fabric.i don't see much ideas out there if anyone can help.
Try looking at art gallery fabrics own website they might have free patterns to go with their fabric collections most fabric manufacturers do this.
I’m happy with my choices
I did get cotton cuts. I answered questions about what kind of fabric and loved fabric I got, but the cost was high. prohibitive.
Sounds like you get a really good mixture of boxes! I did enjoy the creative notions box. It is a good one for sure!
Is there a subscription that would include the thread? Or a sampling of thread?
Sew Yeah's box has a spool of Aurefil in every box.
Open Gate has Aurefil thread too.
I get the sew sampler. I like it. .. I would like to try open gates. But I am unsure how they bill. I was hoping we could do PayPal, venmo or check? . Do you know if they have other payment options other than just by credit card?
I am unsure, but if you email Open Gate I am sure you will get a prompt reply. They are lovely to work with and quick with help!
@@sewbeitquilts thank you so much. I have emailed them, but no answer 😞
No!! It is not easy to get one in Germany, and the postage from the USA or England is to high😢. But I wouledlike to😊
No, U.K. subscription boxes are very expensive compared to those in the US but international postage from the US is extortionate to get them shipped over.
I like projects, with enough fabric for some stash building, and some notions. But I don’t like Halloween, or children’s fabric.
❤
I don't get any boxes I prefer to spend my money on something I like or want
