Mike Estep and the Genesis of the Squarebill Crankbait

  • This is the story about another early squarebill maker, Mike Estep, of Oak Ridge Tennessee. Estep was taught how to make plugs from Fred C. Young, the maker of the Big-O. The Big-O changed the face of crankbaits and the genre of baits would become known as the Squarebill.
Estep took what he learned from Fred Young and built on that design. He created the first wooden crankbait with a rattle, a better weighting system, and paint method. His works were truly game changing.
This is the story of who he was and what he brought to the crankbait industry.

Thanks for taking time to save this history and sharing it for the world to see! I am lucky enough to have some of Mikes baits passed down from my great grandfather, to my dad, and then me.

Turner, an honor! If you have time, come to Pigeon Forge this weekend and see me at the Antique Tackle Show! That is where we are debuting this movie and also showing off a huge collection of Mike's baits. Terry

Terry...this is the single best show I've ever seen on the life and work of a lure maker/angler/artist. Simply astounding, warm, educational, detailed and humorous. As a novice lure maker myself, I also pulled a lot of practical, how-to stuff from Mike's process, so I'm grateful for that. I loved Joe's story about getting those frog spot lures. And it ended with a great story of Joe and Tommy and their friendship, and having them both there together made it extra special. The ending actually had me ever-so-slightly misty eyed (I think the background music had a hand in that). Man, the editing in this is excellent, and the story told is logical and chronological, and relayed in an engaging manner. You can tell a lot of love went into this. It's just brilliant.

I'm watching and listening to this at my bait bench as I'm cutting up a Rapala Scratter Rap5 for the bill to try and put on another bait. Yeah I'm that type of listener! Thanks for the History lesson Terry! Thanks BassFishingArchives! By the way it's a cheap plastic rat bait without a lip and I'm going to change that. It may be one of a kind but it's mine. Don't know how long it will last or even work but the parts are cheap! lol
