I'm in that battery tray area myself on a 70 with a dual port. Mine is a bit worse so I'm replacing most of the area with new. Using M&T parts, they are working reasonably well. Taking my time since this is my first time doing body work.

I used a kit from O’reilly auto parts on this car. Lifetime warranty. You get the whole distributor with the coil, electronic ignition already installed and the distributor cap. The part number for it is VW10. www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/wai-global/wai-global-distributor-new/wair/vw10
