  • Mazda RX-8 versus Porsche Cayman GTS. It's time for another battle of cornering prowess and momentum versus horsepower. The RX-8 is a daily driven street car, it's wearing the same rubber and brake pads i used to drive it to and from the event. This was during a Time Trial (TT) event hosted by Washington DC Region (WDCR) SCCA. The driver came to talk with me afterwards, and the Porsche was on sticky Yokohama A052 tires and the driver is an instructor.

    Now that I live in California I still dream of the Shanandoah circuit… No one understands that track is absolutely sooooo fun and the great equalizer. No sh*t talk, just car control.

    Nice piece of driving! RX8’s are cool. Sounds really good. You were shredding! Really good on the brakes. Quite a bit of bravery too. That carrousel thing looks treacherous.

      Thanks man. Yeah it's risky if you get the karussel wrong but regarding when you get it right! The rx8 has fantastic brakes it so can claim most of the credit. 😎

    Always love seeing the underdog come out on top! Just to confirm the rear bodykit makes it look like the GT4, unless its a 4.0 GTS and he added the wing. Great driving nonetheless my good sir

      @@rx8matt I think you have a 200 lb weight advantage at best. If im not mistaken my old stock rx8 with sunroof was 3100 lbs and these caymans sit just shy of 3200 lbs. One thing i'll never forget was the confidence this car gave when entering a corner, the fender arches and the wide track certainly made the nose easy to steer. People dont know till they drive it!

      @@shazmaster agree. Rx8 gets bad rep... But once I drove one it's the only car I've owned and raced since!!

    How do you think the RX8 and Miata compare on track? I've been thinking about swapping out my NB for one for the higher revving engine and better road noise because I have very long drives, 150-200 miles to and from tracks. My concern is the greater weight and the electric steering not providing as connected an experience.

      The RX8 is like a bigger, roomier, much more comfortable, safer, more exciting NC miata. But the ND miata is very fast, just as fast as rx8 for circuit competition. The NA and NB are less safe and much slower but still fun to track. I love the rx8 because it's safe, practical, and quite quick, and rewarding to drive. the EPS ain't fantastic, but i still wouldn't want to drive a miata versus the rx8. hard to complain with a long wheelbase, and a fixed roof and 9,000+ rpms

      @@rx8matt Thanks for the response! The 9000 RPM and fixed roof life do sound appealing. How about fuel economy on track? I've heard bad things about RX8 mpg generally, can imagine it's worse on track. In my NB I generally can do a full track day and still have a quarter tank or more.

      @@Ferraridude13 rotaries are on-par at the track for fuel consumption, notr worse than a piston car with a tune. rotaries are actualy fairly efficient at high loads - the 787B won at le mans partially due to good fuel economy. fuel consumption will be similar to any other car with around 200hp. you won't get a full day of track on one tank of fuel if you're a good driver with good tires, but the fuel cost is miniscule in the grand scheme. bring a 5 gallon gas can and offset the track fuel costs. my rx8 also runs 87 all the time, no issues.

      @@rx8mattwait… you are always running 87? Have you had a Dyno run with your mods and 87 posted anywhere?

      @@Sbailey294 yep, cheaper and runs just as good or better. lots of renesis guys are starting to tune on 87 octane. never dynoed my blue car.

      yeah it was TT, i don't think he was ready to go 100% in the first session and they had him gridded up front. unfortunately i guess he didn't think i'd catch him that quickly, but he came up and apologized afterwards, and then they re-arranged grid by lap times so it wasn't an issue in the later sessions.
