I've never understood why viewers would complain about a longer video, especially such an Informative one. All they need do is change viewing Speed in the Settings or breakdown into several viewing sessions. TH-cam keeps a History for easily recalling an unfinished viewing.
    Keep Up the Great Work!

For viewers who are not aware, The Tortoise point motor has 2 of the 1 Normally open, 1 Normally closed and a common terminal, internal switches which is what charlie was soldering the wires to.
In addition to the 2 terminals for point operation.

For the Frog Motor wire Piano or otherwise, may I recommend a cycling tool cable cutter that is used for cutting tough high tensile steel wire used for brakes and gears and could get in close enough to your sleepers without the Dremmel thing! About £10.

Hi Charlie. Until recently I was involved with a friend on a large 0 gauge layout, on which for the last 16 or so years we used Tortoise point motors. Like you we changed the wire up to a similar size to what you use. I was disturbed for your well being seeing you use that high speed cutting device. One slip and they can do a lot of damage to the layout or yourself. Piano wire is indeed very hard and requires substantial effort to cut. After a while we discovered that the Xuron hard wire cutters did the job well and relatively safely. It might be worth trying them - we got on OK with them. Safety first perhaps! Barry.
PS keep up the good work and your interesting layout. You are one of the few railway modelling 'experts' on TH-cam who seems to actually know what you are talking about1

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Barry, I hang my head in shame.
Yes I have relinquished cutting my piano wire in that manner. I now put it in place, mar it with a felt tip pen, remove it and cut it whilst holding it horizontally with a spinning disc.
It might not be the ideal option, but it is certainly safer. Regards Charlie

Always important to keep points level when layout. Them down as they cause all sorts of problems for derailments when running trains otherwise

    Hi Charlie,
Brian here from across the pond in Georgia. I'm in the process of building a yard for my Chessie System layout. Until now I've been clipping the end ties from my Atlas flex track. The other day I watched one of your videos where you simply filed the "spike" from the end tie. I tried this and am quite happy to report it works great and looks much better.
    Merry Christmas
    Cheers,
    Brian

I too like the the speed of the video. It is so nice the watch it whitout having to go back to several times, because I missed something. When I glue something together, I use a finger to spred out the glue. I find much easyer and if you have ar wet piece og cloth within reach, it's not a problem to keep your fingers clean.

  • @dolvaran

Charlie, just a thought. If you cut the piano wire a bit long on the track side (maybe half a cm), you can then loosen that retaining screw on the point motor and slide the wire down to the desired position. That way, you never cut close enough to the track to run the risk of melting anything. Alternatively, measure the length of a perfectly assembled wire, and cut several to suit. Then slide them in accordingly.

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry J, but I haven’t explained the motor very well. The wire comes out of the boss then turns 90 degrees. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it and I do hope that you have a great Christmas, regards Charlie.

The one thing that got me was that jumpers comment...”click bait” hilarious. Very informative video as usual. Like you I show any mistakes or issues I have made as well, even tho I have not done a video in ages. I find showing these things just shows other aspects of the hobby, but also how does one overcome them. Keen to see how your elevation goes with small wagons. When I put my elevation in, coaches worked fine on it but I had issues with long rakes of wagons. In the end I could not resolve it so removed the elevation. I love your videos regardless of the speed. In the end you can’t please everyone. Just please yourself which is the most important thing. Have a great Christmas and many happy returns. Clint

Hi Charlie, Thanks so much for such a friendly and totally informative video. You’re a born teacher. Recently, at 82 years young I decided to pull out my model train stuff that I’ve had hidden away for about 40 of those years. Needless to say the track was in terrible condition, black with corrosion. I took a chance, grabbed handfuls of track and immersed it in a bath of Pepsi Cola, (I’m assuming Coke would work just as well) and let it sit for about four hours. I then rinsed the track off really well then immersed the pieces in warm water and detergent and let it sit overnight. In the morning I rinsed the track off again and scrubbed the rails and connectors with a 3M type plastic scouring pad. I was amazed to see, with very little effort, that the rails cleaned up, from charcoal grey to bright and shiny. Thanks again for your inspiration.

Merry Christmas Charlie. A 45 min to an hour long video is fine by me Charlie. As you say, people can either skip through it or run it at 1.5 / 2.0 times faster if they are short for time. Interesting to see you use that strong PVA glue. I'm in the process of relaying an N gauge layout and I use the traditional track pins rather than glue, and it make for easy work. I feel that using that glue and foam will be a nightmare should you ever need to relay the track in the future.

    • @ChadwickModelRailway

No Malcom it’s not a PVA glue, it’s a rubberised alternative to reduce sound transmission. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it and I do hope that you have a great Christmas.

Absolutely good speed for me and was very helpful. I had a layout many years ago which was DC with very simple point motors, I intend to build a new layout using as much as my old kit as possible but with DCC therefore any tutorials showing DCC and fitting point motors is great. Just trying to get my head around it. Thank you Charlie and I hope that you and your family enjoy a very happy Christmas.

    Hello Charlie,
Just watched Your last Video, and as You were eluding to Your mistake, I turned the screen toward tbe Wife and said, Charlie must have made a good one again. Sure enough, as You picked up the Turnout, I said to my better half, there it is, he picked up the wrong Turnout, and we had a good laugh. Rest assured, it happened to me a few times.
So, We hope that You will have a Jolly Holly, and wish You all the best for the coming Year.

    Hi Charlie,
Just finished watching the video and as always I like the humour / drama content I'll admit not picking out the mistake but the end result was another couple of hours of layout involvement.
Thanks for the shout out it was nice of you to do so but unnecessary. I'm just happy to provide alternatives to a fellow railway modeler.
A further suggestion is to have a curved section of track coming off the Up line track of the double slip (about the size of a large radius point) before laying the right hand point this should give you the track spacing that you want.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    Gary

I thought I had watched about 20 minutes of the video, but it was actually 38 minutes when I checked. That means it was very well-paced and interesting. (Time flies when you're having fun!)
And, always remember, every mistake you make and have to re-do effectively doubles the size of your layout. And layouts are always too small anyway, so your turnout mistake was a good thing.

Wish I'd seen this before I laid my track a couple of months back. I've used Peco point motors and their own microswitches superglued on. Now 6 points work perfectly but one carries no current to the electrofrogs while t'other only one polarity. A nice problem to solve while the family watches telly over the next few days! Just hope my expletives don't dispel the season of goodwill.
I love your way of putting things over, Charlie, as it isn't so perfect that it intimidates me! Have a great Christmas and New Year, and I look forward to more demos, cock-ups and all!
