    Quick and easy fix for your self propelled lawn mower that won't go forward. Instead of replacing the belt, the drive cable might need to be adjusted. Every mower will be pretty similar with an adjustment nut for the cable. I show you how to make a quick adjustment to make the self propelled system engage properly.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. My mower quit with over half of my lawn uncut on a Saturday afternoon. I made the adjustments you indicated with great success. Such a simple fix that I overlooked it completely. Thanks again

    any reason why my mower hru216, as long as i engage the self propell handle , the machine will start moving even though it's in neutrual position. ?

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s a clutch that engages when you engage the self propel it locks up to the blade spinning on the motor so there’s going to be a little bit of forward movement I’m guessing. Mine always moved forward as long as it was engaged. It might vary a little bit from model to model depending on how the clutch engagement works on different models but that’s what I’ve seen on mine at least. That’s why there’s a bar to disengage it or to mow backwards I just let off it completely. Hope that helps answer your question! Thanks for watching!

    My gear selector will not move out of #3. I tried adjusting the cable but doesn't move far enoughlooser to get back to #1. Any ideas? I'm a 68-year-old grandma trying to fix my mower. :)

      Hey there glad you found my channel! It's possible there's a gearbox issue, I was able to get this working for a while longer but eventually found out there was a major part that needed to be replaced that connected the gears to the drive and I ended up scrapping the mower a year or so later after I made this video. It ran okay just as a regular push mower until the oil pan sprung a major leak and got oil everywhere. Old mower, probably lasted 30 years it was an old and tired mower and had a long life. If yours isn't the drive cable it could be gear box or a pulley or a belt most likely. Tough to diagnose without looking closely at it. Best bet I've found is to find a guy on Facebook marketplace that sells a lot of used mowers, like a bunch of mowers not just one, that's the guy in town who usually fixes them up, I found two mower repair guys just by looking at marketplace ads for used mowers fixed up. Usually better than taking it to an expensive shop. Hope you find out what's wrong with it sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck!

    I liked it. Got dizzy watching due to camera motion. I lost it when you said "loosen the nut so it engages better". How do we know to tighten or loosen. You already knew which way. Somehow.

    • @DIYDad1

      steve jette yeah that’s my bad when I’m talking without a script lol. Loosen the nut first so you can make the cable move and adjust it THEN tighten it back up once it’s in place 😁

      @@DIYDad1 Thanks for the prompt reply !! Don't mean to trollish but that doesn't answer. Yes, I know to loosen the nut first. Yes I know to adjust it. BUT "once it's in place"?
      To tighten the belt, am I moving more threads ABOVE the nuts or BELOW the nuts ?

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      steve jette so basically what you are trying to do is shorten up the cable between the gearbox and the engagement lever so that segment of cable should be tighter. When it’s loose you can pull that inter cable that rides inside the black outer jacket up towards the handle bars a little bit and it will take out some of the slack a bit. Mine has a bit on the front side and the back of the bracket where the cable is held in place. Some models might have just one. I have done this in a while but if I remember correctly I’d you tighten the inner but it will pull the cable tighter or if you loosen the inner nut it will let some of the cable out a bit. Then it’s just a tension fit once you get it adjusted just torque down both nuts to clamp that cable in place between the bracket that it’s held in. Hope that helps! I just had to play with it a bit and adjust one or the other. It either moves one way or the other. As you loosen the outer nut you tighten the inner nut in tandem until it’s where you want it. So to tighter you want those threads to be more on the outside above the two nuts.

      steve jette if that below info doesn’t help I’ll see if I can make a follow up video on this at some point! Gotta do some more mower maintenance anyway now that it’s spring time!

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marcin Tabak I do actually! I don’t run it nearly as often as I used to, but it’s still a great machine and works wonderfully and starts up every time I need it to. I’ve been running my manual reel mower all this season so far so I haven’t even started it up yet this spring lol. I’ll have to do a follow up video I think. Gotta get the lawn equipment up and running soon!

    What is this guy rambling on about, he's no idea what he's taking about and even turned the adjuster the wrong way slacking the cable that's why he didn't feel any difference. 🤣
