As a new player jumping in with friends who have played for decades, I worry about not playing the optimal play, possibly giving an advantage to the player after me (this is in heavier games). I also don't want anyone waiting for me, so don't spend a lot of time on AP during my turn (but try during other players turns). It's tough playing with friends with far more experience (and smarts!), but luckily they have patience.
When you both were describing your worst thing, it was often preceded by high anticipation, causing a maximal expectation differential. A bit like hitting an awful rulebook for a game you were really excited to open up.
