Saito FA-80 A Rebuild Story w/Static Thrust v1.0

  • A former FA-80GK stripped, cleaned and rebuilt. I bought it in pieces. Watch to see if it runs. The only parts I replaced were: drive washer and collet, bearings, gaskets. I just ran a small tight fitting screw driver through the push rod tubes to straighten and get most of the dents out.

    ' wish I had x-ray vision to see the condition of the bearings in this very pretty, but 'run some' and stiff GK FA 80, just acquired here, which loosened up well w/0w20 through backplate breather port. Also shot it up with Marvel Mystery Oil in top end. Seems like the default rule of thumb is "when in doubt, replace bearings". I think I will try running it anyway, first with its 12x6 prop it came with. Yours runs great!

    I like the natural look of the cast aluminum. Good call Dave. Dang you make the tuning look so easy!

      Tuning a Saito is very easy David.

    Great engine! I have an 82 that is a joy too!

    I've got a golden Knight 80 that has some chips off the paint and I think it would look a lot better stripped than it does now and I need to disassemble it anyway cause it doesn't have much compression and it won't even pop when you put the glow driver on it and it won't pull fuel in and I've checked and adjusted the valves and that didn't help at all! What do you think might make it have so little compression! I've got a Enya 80 and a Saito 65 and a few others and they have a lot more compression than it does! I've already ordered the gasket set what else would I need!

    I like how slow the Satio's idle. Sounds like they have a high lift cam on a small block. Lol

    Amazing engine, David! Saito FA-80 produces more than 7.33lb force of thrust! Very nice! David and everybody. About the nitro percent in glow mixture with 18% oil (50/50 castor/synthetic), how much nitro percent is better with type F glow plug in 4-stroke glow engine: 10% nitro or 15% nitro? Cheers from Brazil

      There is no 'BEST" fuel to run in an engine. There is little difference in performance between 5%, 10%, and 15%. I choose to run 5% in my engines as it costs less and runs well.

    I have a Saito 150 that runs great but I hear it click when I rock the prop back and forth. I thought it was a bad bearing but I hear it on your 80 here as well. It sounded like the bearing but could it just be the valves? I don’t here it on my OS 4 strokes!
    Thanks for your time! Nice job too!

      Possibly (desired) play in the straight camshaft gear of the saitos? Straight gears are always kinda noisy, and OS uses a 90° helical gear.

      old thread, but I have one that clicks like that. The sound is coming from the top end, though. Stick you ear on it. (While not running)

    Wow. I never knew Saito GK engines were painted. I thought they were black anodized considering the rather substantial price difference between them and the natural silver versions.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the old ones were painted a bit differently than the new ones. I had a 72GK that I tried to strip the paint on and it laughed at me. So only the older ones can be stripped. I have no idea the timeline for the change however.

      DBJr1980 Ithink the older ones were painted, the newer ones were powder coated. Which I’ve found will laugh at anything but a sand blaster.

    Is there supposed to be a gasket between the head case and crankcase? I ordered Engine Gasket Set:I,J (SAI8032B) from Horizon and everything so far is coming back together...I just seem to remember there being a gasket between the two. If I ordered the wrong kit which one should I get?

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No Saito has never used a gasket between the head and the case.

  • @CurryRoberts

    I was given this engine about a week ago and I think it needs new bearings. The prop shaft turns freely and there seems to be good compression but a small grinding feel/sound at the front bearing. Do you have to take the header off to replace the bearings?

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The exhaust header? You do not have to remove the exhaust header to replace the front bearings, but the head must come off. Then the timing gear, and crankshaft have to be removed. I mean if I am replacing bearings I disassemble the entire engine to clean all parts.

      I watched more of your videos and I think I have a better idea on what needs to be done! Thank you for taking the time to put those videos together. I've never attempted replacing the bearings so this should be a fun project for my son and I.

    I notice that you usually run Fia fuel or 5 percent nitro.
    How do you decide which fuel is best for each engine?

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I very seldom run FAI. I started running 5% over 10% in my airplanes that I fly due to the cost of fuel. I have also determined over many videos that my engines run just as well on 5% and the additional nitro content is not necessary. Many times I choose 5% because that is what my fuel pump is currently connected too. I only run other fuels if the age or the engine or manual suggests something different. So research, experience, cost, and ease are the criteria I use for determining fuels. The nature of my channel dictates that I have numerous types to experiment with.

      Do ys engines require higher nitro or will they run fine on 5, 10, or 15 percent?

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes YS typically YS engines require a specific fuel. I run 20% nitro in mine but I have read/heard that 15% is adequate also. The manual for the engine is the best guideline to go by. I am certain that I mention the fuel I use in my YS 120 and FZ53 videos.
