    Why are people being so mean in these comments? Congrats to all of you that want to be or are already serious musicians. For you, yes it makes sense to play by traditional methods. But there are people who just want to pick up an instrument occasionally and make a pleasant sound and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. They don't have to dedicate their lives to it to enjoy it. This man is just trying to give those people an easy way to make a little music when the mood strikes. Music is for everyone. It's narrow minded and unhelpful to bash someone for not doing it the way you think they should. Thank you mediocre musician for the tutorial.

      I couldn't agree more! What the haters do not understand is that everyone learns different and is motivated differently. I almost quit trying to learn 4 yrs ago, until I found a video similar to this one. I used open G to remind myself I can make a nice sound with the guitar. I kept one guitar in standard tuning and one in open G tuning. I still practiced chords properly but would switch to my open G guitar when I needed a boost. Doing this kept me from quitting and allowd me to play some with my father before he passed. I'm not sure why I waited so long to learn, my dad had been in bands his whole life. But I was lucky to have a couple of good guitar years with him before he passed and those yrs are priceless. They were only made possible by finding a video like this. One last point of interest, Keith Richards of the Stones plays many of their songs in open G. Who am I to say he's wrong..😎

    I think this is a pretty good shortcut for someone who just wants to learn to play in a very basic way. Personally I didn’t start playing acoustic guitar until I was 57. 20 years later I get paid quite a bit of money to play guitar. Learning three basic chords D,G, and A is my recommendation. You’ll be able to play 1 million songs with those cords and by use of a capo 1 million more. Then one day you’ll find yourself picking out a melody and hitting E minors along with other chords that will come along. My Philosophy has always been learn the simple stuff really well and the more complicated things will become easier. Most people give up because initially it is very hard but once you get over the hump you’ll be glad you did. It has been a wonderful complement to my retirement. I can’t imagine life without the camaraderie and fun of working with other musicians and having the thrill of doing a gig all by yourself and holding an audience for an hour. When I started I would’ve never in 1 million years believed that I could actually be given a penny for playing a guitar. My advice is play anyway you can even this way you’ll be glad you did.

Some of the World's famous guitar players have played and/or play their songs with open tuning. Ever wondered why some of them have like 3 or 4 guitars for the entire concert? Yeah, well, maybe now you'll understand.

      +Fuganaga _ Yeah, this is great advice, but it still needs some serious learning. Yes, it will make the learning faster. There is no need going the hard way. If you can tune the guitar in such a way to make it easier, it is very nice. Just as if a farmer discovers a better way of sharpening his tools, why not use it?

      ***** There are hundreds of guitar tunings. At the end of the day with all the tunings a "G" chord has to sound the same. Whatever way you tune your guitar to make playing easier, please do it. If it is something new, then it will be welcome to the table. However, Open G has been around for ages and many rock musicians used it and will always use it. There is not a single musician that goes the hard way unnecessarily. Those that use standard tuning, I guess, they do because of the kinds of songs they play which Open G won't help.

    • @deasttn

      +ImaITman it took me less than an hour to learn them and where to play like 4 different chords at a time but took me months to perfect them to where I can easily switch between them. and even still today I fuck up and it's been close to 3 or 4 years. Amd dude I played In a band like 4 months after I got a guitar lol. Not to say we were any good bc it was just me and a drummer lol and we both started playing but noetheless we still play together to this day but nkt as often anymore bc we both have different directions on what we're wanting to do. like he's more into Attila and all this new screamo/techno stuff and I'm more into stuff like metallica, avenged sevenfold, skillet, pantera, green day, iron maiden, def leopard occasionally, just sort of the older stuff. But we get together to jam every now and then. not ad much as we used to tho

    Curious about all these long-time players dissing this approach. How is changing the tuning of the guitar to make playing certain songs easier "cheating"?? How is Drop D tuning any more or less valid a way to play that this tuning? Shall we call Keith Richards and ask him?

      Change the B string one semitone down, then you have Open G minor, and to play a major chord, just put one finger on the second string.

    • @jdj62464
      @jdj62464 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Dark Battle Chain or you use a triad and just play the first 3 strings. It's the triad that looks like a inverted D chord. for those that don't know place your first finger on the second string on the first fret, place your middle finger on the third string second fret, place your ring finger on the first string second fret now strum just those 3 strings, VOILA you just made a A minor. Move that same shape down 2 frets and you have B minor, move it down 1 more fret and you have a C minor, down 2 more D minor, down 2 more E minor, down 1 more F minor, down 2 more now you have G minor. When you get to the 13 fret it starts all over just an octave higher.

    Come august I'll have been playing for 3 years so I have had some experience with keys as such. G is a good key but I would completely recommend tuning your guitar to the "open D tuning". beautiful sound and you can literally hold one string down and make some sick combinations! The tuning is D,A,D,D,A,D. I haven't posted videos or anything but if anyone would like for that to be done just say so! I wouldn't mind giving it a try!

      So did Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath not long after he had his fingers chopped off at work,so he could turn down the strings to move them with the power he had available physically which created some of the best Rock & Roll ever. D G C F A D and D Full Step down also C# 3 half steps and C 2 steps down.Mess around with a few of em and you will find a whole bunch of great tunes brudda,but afterwards take a few moments to do your favorite song 2 or 3 times without brain-freeze. That's why when I go Sabbath I tend to finish with it until tomorrow..Then pick an easy tune to jump back into 440. :)

      Hell, the fact that you use tabs as opposed to actual musical notation (something a 5 year old can do) would signify to some people that you aren't a real musician. But again, who cares what they say? Just play.

      What are the notes in open E guitar tuning? Btw, "have" is a helping verb, so write (present), wrote (simple past), and have written (present perfect0 are correct. "Have wrote" is incorrect. Present perfect refers to an action that is completed and whose effects are still relevant or which endures to the present. Simple past shows a completed process, past event, or prior condition.

    I have many guitars and a lot are set with different tunings to standard. I use open G and D for slide but I also play chords using G tuning in the same way as Keith Richards does. I have one set up with a Trivial tuning where all the strings are tuned up or down to the same note. Usually D. The strings are tuned in different octaves and when you barre a fret you get a beautiful chiming sound. If you google 'Ostrich tuning ' there are a lot of articles on it. I use it to add texture to recordings. I did steal it from Lou Reed. It's been used on a lot of songs ,not just by The Velvet Underground. I can clearly hear it on Rock n Roll by Gary Glitter for example.

You can scream, moan and whine whit more notes too, it's only up to you. If you like less notes, that's your choice, but imo you have to be more open minded musically speaking in order to become a great player.

      @DeeBroughton 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Anthony Scaife Exactly. Some of the commenters don't understand, even saying they are not "real" chords. They are real, just like a chord at the low end of a piano is as real as one up at the top of the keyboard or played with a different inversion. He's playing I IV V chords which can be used on tons of songs. In this case, the I is G but you can use this tuning to transpose a C song to G or whatever, as long as you realize the chords are I IV V. Play around with open tunings and you can also start to make your own chords easily. It's really very useful for learners and for improvising. Much of the old Blues is in open G, too. If you don't like the sound of G, open D is nice. There are tons of alternate tunings. There's nothing sacred about the standard.

  • @cooljunkproductions
    @cooljunkproductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I just started to learn the guitar but I can't see myself changing the standard tuning considering that the majority of resources refer to standard... but it makes me wonder some things- like if it may be better for a beginner to learn the guitar in a non standard way, like in the taro patch tuning in the video so they can get earlier experience with chords and putting them together and getting proper strumming patterns. Because, as you start, there are so many things you must figure out- and getting your fingers twisted on the fretboard may be something that ought to come later. Not to say that you must pay no attention to the standard tuning. It may be even more beneficial if you can anticipate the change- perhaps by studying how and why the notes change depending on how each string is tuned. So when you switch back you can focus on just the left hand and adjusting mostly to that.
    I dunno. Just a thought.

      +cooljunkproductions Learning chords and more importantly being able to change chords in time is much more important than strumming patterns. Unless it comes naturally I've found timing to be the biggest hill to climb. Especially when playing in non 4-4 time signatures.

      believe it or not I thought the same thing but to me it just discourages me to think about it like that bc then you have too much theory going on in your head. Don't get into that mindset of your just beginning to learn. you'll just get to a point where you won't know what to do and get too much on your plate that you wanna learn and you'll wanna quit and drive yourself mad. Just learn In standard tuning. keep surprising yourself with learning something new but don't try to learn too much at once. and definitely don't tune like that lol. If you jusy want to play to impress your friends then go ahead but if your really wanting to learn guutar keep it in normal standard tuning or drop d(where you tune only the thickest string -E- down to d). learn whatever keeps you happy. Don't try to learn stuff jusy to impress people even tho that's a part of it no matter what. Most of all just impress yourself. I'd advise learning every style just bc even if you may not like the style you'll pick up on cool techniques and new chords and licks

      +ImaITman You're right. I've quickly moved on from that and into chord switching.

      +ImaITman I don t agree. He didn t emphasize learning the strumming patterns so much, more important is that you can " ..get experience with chords and (how to) putting them together, which means in fact learning the basic rules of harmonies or better the main underlying structure of narly 80 % percent of pop, folk and even blues / rock music. By being able to play very soon most of " ever-green" music, in this case meaning not literally evergreens but standards in different popular genres, you will learn incredibly lot about music.
      By the way, it reminds in a way of how John Lennon started his instrumental learning : it was a guitar, yet at at start his mother taught him basic chords in banjo ( which she did play) tuning, making it much easier for him then.

      +cooljunkproductions I think it's better for beginners to stick with the basics. The only thing I would concider as a beginner is tuning down the guitar so that the strings don't hurt your fingertops as much. It also brings a slightly better tune imo than standard tuning, but the chord formations are all the same.

    this method is great for kids as well. they'd just mess around and not get easily intimidated. and if they like it, they can then take it a step further to Standard E.
    Loved your video dude!

    Well i mean I don't really see whats wrong with this, everyone says that it makes you worse or it makes you waste time and even progress slower, I mean, are we running on a deadline. We have decades to learn guitar lol. And this is a good way to begin because Basic chords are just to hard to learn, believe me, I learned the hard way and I know what its like. Whos says they just can't learn the easy way first and then the hard way, I mean there's no wrong way to play guitar. god this paragrah is getting long. wtf i start typing for a minute then boom a fucking paragrah, what was I even talkimg about, i fucking forgot jesus christ. does this ever halpen to anyone else or is it just me. i think i was talking about a guitar or something.

    A lot of folk music is played this way, with tricky plucking and completely different finger style/ positions to standard chord shapes. Definitely not a hack in tuning guitars to open chords, but is a good hack for beginners to gain bar chord hand strength and strumming patterns!! Which may lead to them learning the “proper” chord patterns and more!!
