I wrote acapella for about 25 years, began guitar in my 50's , then in the swing of things, had no time or energy to play from my wife battling and loosing to cancer, then 2 years after, I'm nearly crushed to death in a 70 thousand pound mixer roll over up side down, now 11 months after all that, still in a Lot of pain, I stumble upon your youtube stuff. You have been a huge blessing in helping me get my mojo back, thanks so much

For someone like me 55 and just picking the guitar up you are absolutely the best teacher on TH-cam that I have found. Please keep doing what you are doing. Because you are helping a lot of people. If I lived near you I would definitely be asking you for in person lessons. Cheers to you. This was a great lesson.

Jonathan's a fantastic teacher. Paced really well, methodical, clear and doable. Starts off basic and develops the lesson, and doesn't assume his audience already knows certain things. Nothing but admiration for someone who has the skill, is able to teach and willing to teach. Winning combination. Many thanks. 👍 BTW I have the same guitar rack as Jonathan, but sadly that's where the similarities end! 😀

I'm a 59 year old beginner, again. I did not pursue the guitar when i was younger because I couldn't tune it. Now with electronic tuners and teachers like you, I'm progressing. Had I known that knowing 4 or 5 chords I could play so many songs I probably would have continued. It took the death of a guitar playing friend to finally make the commitment. Watching your videos is certainly helping with things that other TH-cam teachers are leaving out. Thanks.

I wanted to play since I was 5 years old, a woman broke up with me, I was sad, so I played the guitar. I was 29 years old when that happened, been playing off and on ever since, I'll be 47 in July.

Great decision to show everyone the G fingering with the middle, ring and fourth fingers. I had planed for decades using the traditional index, middle and ring fingers and only then "discovered" the fingering that you point out on my own. I now move between different fingerings without even thinking about it, sometimes even during the same song. I urge beginner and novice guitarists to adopt this tip and learn both fingerings for the G Major chord sooner than later.

Great beginner lesson! Same way I taught my sons to play. AND if you simply add E minor chord, you have the chords of the "four chord song" in the key of G: G > D > Em > C. With that, your beginners can play countless songs they've heard on the radio...Amaze their friends and family with the 4 chord song!

You are the first person that has a great way of explaining both verbally and visually that gives the viewer something that they can essily learn and use. Especially where you take the time to show the placement of the fingers over and over.
May G-d bless you to continue to share your skills with others and may it provide you with good income. Those who give to others end up to also receive.

Mr. Kehew, you have no idea how much your video means to me. January of last year I suffered some disabling injuries in an accident. I was thrown out of work soon after. I'll probably never work again. I have a guitar but never really tried to play it. With nothing but time on my hands I've picked it up and have started learning in earnest. Man, I come back to this 6 years later and realize even more how much gold there is here.
This chord at 11:38 that he calls the "Hard Day's Night G"
I call it the "Wonderwall G."
Oasis used this modified G throughout that song.
They actually left their fingers unmoved on the 1st and 2nd string for the whole song.
    I love that

Started playing three months ago, age 53, and have to say this is a wonderful video. Funny things is, as a beginner, you sometimes do the hammer notes and smooth chord changes without knowing why - and then get it all wrong the next time and wonder why. This sure helps explain a lot. I'm subscribing.

@@jkehew1 I did not even know about this DCG thing but the first 3 chords I learned were DCG in that order. I discovered I could move easily from one shape to another, then I find out that "millions" before me also discovered this. I started playing about 6 months ago (I figure I have about of 120hrs of practice, I am 65 I bought a Yamaha FG 830, it needed action lightened). I discovered the DCG thing at about the 60hr point. I was having some good trouble with the G chord (E string finger touching A string) but I stuck it out (relaxed but still with power) and it worked. I do this DCG thing constantly during practice (3x20 minutes per day). My fingers do get sore so then I one hand it with a strap on (standing up) and just work the GB high E strings. Playing notes off these 3 strings, one handed while standing up is very relaxing, let that fretting hand rest a bit. Steven Stills can be observed with this one handed bottom 3 strings only technique in the Suite: Judy Blue Eyes live videos (he also likes to tap on his guitar, which I think makes a cool sound)

Beyond helpful, it was taught in a relaxed manner with exact precision for any learner and as a refresher course for all budding players. The end tip with the varying chord shapes is especially useful, I could also hear 'Lindisfarne's' - 'meet me on the corner' riff building from this progression, a very smart breakdown of an important style. I'm going to grab my guitar now and check it out, many many thanks...........

I'm a self taught guitarist who's been playing for 30 years now and what you're calling the D-C-G trick is how I've been naturally switching chords in this progression since I was a teen. I never thought of it as a "trick" rather just the easiest way to seamlessly switch between these particular chords. Also the"Hard days night G" is the only way I ever play G in a full chord form. I feel it's important to note that for certain songs you do have to play the full major chords to get the right sound but in general this "trick" is the best way to go, especially for beginners and people who don't quite have the dexterity to seamlessly switch between major chords. Mr. Bo Jangles is another nice descending bass line using this basic same chord progression. Kudos to you for giving out free instruction via social media. Sure wish there was You Tube when I was a kid but, then again having to figure things out on my own has probably made me a better player in the long run.

It's never too late to start playing! You can make it as easy or as hard as you want, and is a great relaxation therapy technique. Like golf, you focus to the point of ignoring things like money, laundry, and work for a moment. I feel that music is as close to actual magic as you can get. You can make people laugh, cry, feel good, or feel sad. You try to share as much of it as you can, without giving any of it away. This video shows that you don't need years of study to have a little of this magic for your own.

When I was a kid about 1970 I got my first guitar for Christmas. My mom had never played guitar only clarinet and marimba back in high school. She taught me three cords and how to play Red River Valley my first day using the little booklet that came with the guitar. I'm 64 now and that remains my only lesson. She taught me to read chord charts and turned me loose. If people follow your instructions they can learn to play in one day too.
