    ⚡QUESTION: What are your study tips? What has worked for you and what hasn't? If you're almost done with school, what do you wish you knew when you first started?

      Nicholas Duchnowski Hi! Thank you for making such informative videos! I’m in week 5 of my first term at PCOM San Diego and am doing well! This video has perfect timing as I’m learning that I need to shift my study habit for some of my classes, like anatomy.
      My main habit is to create quiz questions and answer them. I like to write my answers on paper as it compounds my visual and tactile learning needs.
      I recently took the advice of my instructor to use plastic sheet protectors and a dry erase marker for learning the table of correspondences and that’s been helpful! Though I noticed that I was remembering patterns of writing on the chart and not the actual information so I started doing a “popcorn” style of filling the table in.
      Now that I have a lot of muscles for which I need to know the origin, insertion, and actions, I’m finding that my written quiz situation isn’t ideal and that I want to switch to a grid in a sheet protector to see how that works. I also want to condense all of the muscles that perform the same function(s) too so that I can get a clearer full picture to use in the future.

      @@medusa1719 Oh nice. How is school going so far? I feel like first term is a lot of fun classes. But things do really start to ramp up in your second term when take Points 1 and Herbs. So it's good to have some solid study habits in place before you start those classes.

      I like to create art projects that represent the basics (the channel flow, wu xing, basic patterns of symptoms in each channel, organ clock, Shen overview, etc)
      I have these posters, clocks and murals in my kitchen, bathroom and bedroom so that I’m seeing the information constantly and it’s becoming second nature

    I am 16 years old and interested into being an acupuncturist. The only thing setting me back is all the information and studying that I would have to do. This video really cleared up some anxiety. You explained each point very well and I feel more confident that I really could do this as a career. Thank you for creating clear directions and really breaking down everything!

    Thanks so much for the information.
    I found the part about the coffee shop sooo true. I will study all day but retain very little because I get distracted, listen to music, text, snack...etc. And don't stay home because you will find dishes to wash, clothes to wash, etc...... what you say about study a little bit every day is the best advice ever. Even my herb teacher told us at least an hour a day to review. I think OM is just as hard as MD in its own way.

    But simplifying words and definitions. Then having something to associate the information too.
    Which relating to electronics, hydraulics or such, it might help but one would need familiarity to these would be needed. Laws of physics seem to associate between these different principles.
    Having something to correlate that a person is aware of can help.
    Which better teachers can do these things.

    HI Nicholas! I appreciate your videos SO much. They've been very helpful. I find that memorizing the point Functions is really difficult, and knowing how to choose one point over another very difficult since there are so many overlapping functions. I am only in term 1 and am worried about term 2 and how much more info there will be. Can you suggest some good ways to condense point function information? And perhaps direct toward resources on strategies to "choose points" clinically? It would be Much apprecaited :) thank you.

    I create Quizlet (flashcards) lists that are perfect for last day preparation for tests as they are made for drilling, however are almost useless for real knowledge, unless you're coming back to your lists every week over and over again, that becomes close to impossible with the increasing amount of information you have to study. FYI, Quizlet already has tons of lists created by its users, including TCM students.

    • @tcmstudy
      @tcmstudy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was never into flashcards/quizlet myself, but I know a lot of people study that way. Thomas Frank has this cool video with a technique for using flashcards: th-cam.com/video/eVajQPuRmk8/w-d-xo.html
      I think the basic idea is that you can organize your flashcards into different piles based on how important the information is and how well you can remember it. And then there are apps that do the same thing. They have a built-in adaptive process that prioritizes the cards you're forgetting. Anyway, it's a cool video.

    Any tips for memorizing acupuncture points? The amount of numbers is just making my head spin. I can find points just fine when I look at my book, but if someone just tells me: find VIII-6, I freeze.

      Is that a five element thing, referring to the channels by number rather than name?

    • @braveshieldmaiden
      @braveshieldmaiden 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tcmstudy it is! In class we refer to meridians by both number and name, hence why point location has been really hard for me.

      Many people begin by reading The Web that Has no Weaver (amzn.to/3d5jDjT affiliate link). It maybe depends on which country you are in, but in America you would go to school for four years in order to become licensed.

      If you're new to Chinese medicine, one place a lot of people start is with the book The Web that Has No Weaver by Ted Kapchuck.

    The problem that I found with learning TCM in the west is that the way the exams are geared, you just need to retain info and Puke it out at exam time. This is not a reflection of a persons skills nor any kind of Experience. FACTOID: the plethora of information is exasperating, you need to know Both Eastern and Western Systems, the methods of testing are rediculous when considering that TCM has many ways to treat illness and disease, its too Abstract to say one way is the only way and to try to memorize everything in TCM and then being able to barf it up at Exam time is ludicrous and a Fast Track to Psychosis. imo Steven Thorne TCMD Canada

      I felt the same way in school. Especially in second year, we were just memorizing Maciocia's point prescriptions. That's when I really got into the book Applied Channel Theory by Wang Ju-Yi

    Desperate attempt to gain a TH-cam following. Almost all of this is common sense. I'd say one of the biggest problems people contend with these days is the lack of retention one gains by taking notes on a computer, versus collating and writing the information on paper. That process recruits more parts of the brain and employs kinetic as well visual learning. Then later, when one wants to transfer it to a computer, they automatically go over the work again. Time saving is not necessarily you friend when it comes to learning and resurrection of information.
