I’m teaching Beowulf to four groups of high school juniors right now! I love it more every year (this is my thirtieth)! A couple of years back, a student loaned me his dad’s copy of Tolkien’s translation. Encouraging family involvement is crucial. I assign things that ask for parent engagement, and I’m blessed to teach in a community where parents welcome this. 🙂
Oh, you and I must be kindred spirits! I would always send a letter to the families of my upper level Latin students telling them that we would be reading the great works that touch on major themes of human experience and encouraging families to discuss them. Oddly, I just picked up Tolkien's Beowulf, despite knowing when it came out in 2015. It is interesting, to be sure.
I have always heard of it but have not read it yet. My son loves to read with me. I’ll pull out my book and sit on the couch and he climbs up beside me with his animal book and we read together. He sometimes insists my book is upside down when I turn his over the right way but oh well part of reading with a toddler 😂
I agree with @67leighton. Check out the Classic Starts series of books on Amazon. They are a good way for young people to enter the world of great literature.
Have read that book, many years ago when I was in school and had forgotten about it until I heard your reading it! Do you know if it was required reading in school.
One of the marks of a good teacher is the willingness to also learn

Read him a simple version of Beowulf when he’s like seven or eight! My son loved it!
Good on ya, my friend!

Loved smoking and thinking to this one.
It used to be and was until quite recently. Sadly, in many schools it has been removed for works written more recently.
