Seeking nirvana and remote camping in the Gondwana Rainforests of Lamington National Park

  • A multi day hike through the Gondwana Rainforests of Lamington National Park, starting from Green Mountains (O'Reilys) and hiking through to Cockscombe Point (Nirvana Spur) via Point Lookout and exiting the range out through to Christmas Creek with a short detour to visit the Stinson Wreck. The first night was spent at the remote but luscious rat-a-tat campsite.
    Shot entirely with the Sony A7C (20mm F1.8 G) and DJI Mavic Air 2 (which sadly became the latest casualty to the unforgiving jungle - but this has now been recovered, YAY).

    Try going to The Lost World - before you turn off to Rat a tat.

      Yep, I've been up there from the other end (Kerry's Rd). Still yet to do an overnight up there, so I will at some point in the near future.

    Hey Aaron,
    Love your vids! I'm thinking of doing this exact hike later this week! If you were to do it again is there anything you'd change in terms of where you stopped for the night? Furthermore, although I'm a very experienced day hiker, I've only done a few overnight trecks and may I ask is there anything special you should do with your food overnight in the aussie bush?
    Thankyou
    Lachlan

      Thanks Lachlan. Nah, I think the choice of campsites were perfect for us, although it is pretty rough between Point Lookout and Cockscombe. It is usually wise to hang your food up in a nearby tree overnight, especially if there are rats or mice around. Enjoy your trek, it is awesome out there!

      Hello Aaron, I like your work 👍 re camp at Mt Throakban I was thinking of that spot, I think under park management rules I maybe able to camp there. Can I ask how many hours from Green Mountain/ O'Reilly's car park, is there room for 2 or 3 tents is it flat ? Thanks in advance regards Mark

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @MrVelvetino thanks! It’s not an official camp spot so camp at your own risk. From memory, there’s prob enough room to squeeze in two tents. Three might be pushing it. It is flat. I’d still recommend dropping into rat-a-tat to collect water. Cheers!

    Awesome work, putting the vid together, and finding that drone!
    I have gone up from Christmas Ck with Cockscombe as the objective on a day trip. We could not find the way down to Cockscombe Pt from the trail on the rim. Was a big day, and we ran short of time while casting around for the way down... Can you tell me how you navigated, or any other trail notes that would help? Thanks heaps.

      Cheers Nathan! It wasn't the first time I had been to Cockscombe but it can be difficult to navigate. We have always used the topo on our phone to navigate down to Cockscombe. I think as a general rule it is best to navigate from the saddle (where we camped) and you don't want to detour too far east. You only want to go east a short distance (~50m) before heading straight down the escarpment and onto the razorback spur. There is some old pink tape that should let you know you are heading the right direction but it is steep going down. It would be a long day trip from Christmas Creek!

    Nice one. Did you map this walk at all? And how did you find that drone? Does it have gps built in or something?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers! The drone has active gps tracking. I had its last known co-ordinates before it went down so it was all about navigating to that location and then hoping that it was accurate. Still feel pretty lucky to have found it though 👍

    I’ve gotta ask … how often do you come across snakes and spiders in and around your camp or while walking ?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spiders are never an issue but their webs can get in the way sometimes. I have never seen a snake around camp, but we often run into them whilst walking. I hadn't seen any snakes for a few months until last weekend when we ran into two large pythons, so they are staring to re-appear now with the warmer weather on its way. Generally we just leave them be and walk around them whenever possible.

      Thanks! I’m pretty glad I found it too. O’Reilys hold the annual Stinson walk through that side of the park following in the footsteps of Bernard so the track is fairly maintained and generally marked well. Rat-a-tat is a great campsite so I’d recommend getting out there 👍
