The size, weight and grip of the new era of cars makes them pretty boring. You’ve got classic turns that are no longer challenges due to the grip like Ea Rouge and 130R as mentioned (+ a dozen or more others), the weight which makes them less agile + exciting, the width which further reduces wheel-to-wheel possibilities and finally the overall speed produced by the greater downforce and grip (higher speeds ALWAYS worse racing).

Kimi was just insane at the time. Too bad the McLaren couldn't quite hold up well enough, a proper Kimi vs Nando title fight would have been amazing that year. But we of course ended up getting 2007, one of the most thrilling title fights of all time.

The best wheel to wheel racing and passes ever in one was the 2014 Silverstone GP and also featured Alonso making most of the amazing passes, including two passes on Vettel at Copse at 190 mph separated by inches at most. And he had about 4 other insane passes that day.

I remember watching that live. It was an awesome race. Real edge of the seat stuff. I remember being exhausted at the end lol! Some outstanding driving that day.
I think the first one just has the edge because of the reason that makes the best overtakes IMHO - it wasn't expected. Again, in my opinion, that moment when you're yelling "No *#@!ing way!" after seeing an audacious overtake where no one ever does it, that's what makes them special. Similarly, unexpected overtakes for other reasons.
Away from that classic you were talking about, I should only need to say, Schumi, Mika, Zonta, Spa. _That_ was an all-time great, not because it was more dangerous necessarily, but because even Murray had never seen it! Nobody did that. So that is what makes the best overtakes to me.

To be honest, I enjoy watching two drivers battling an scrapping for positions, much more than just overtaking. It’s a showcase of racing skill and respect. Even better if the surroundings of the track make it look speedy. That’s why I loved Ocon and Alonso in Jeddah last year so much. That’s why I don’t fully understand people’s desire for more overtakes from circuits that underperform in that regard (eg. Monaco, Paul Ricard, Catalunya, etc.)

9:34 I’m gonna say the bravery of an overtake mainly because anyone can do a fairly simple overtake up the inside but an round the outside overtake needs allot of bravery but so would an inside overtake I think all so late breaking is a factor aswell because for example Strolls overtake in Jeddah round the outside was impressive and needed a lot of bravery cause of the circuit the corner and the situation and mainly required a lot of bravery and less to do with the breaks however Ricciardo overtake on Bottas when he was in the Red Bull and Bottas was in the Merc in either 2017 or 2018 also required bravery because of how tight but also Ricciardo’s late breaking was what made that a good overtake for me so overall for the overtake to be a good one I think it depends on a couple of things. The situation the track and the person making the overtake

People sometimes forget about Kimi's Mclaren years, and just think of him as this guy with an odd sense of humor, and getting the vibes that he doesn't really care.
He was, back in the day, one of the hottest prospects. Remember, he was brought to Ferrari to replace Schumacher. And is still the last Ferrari drivers champion.
And the reputation that he doesn't really care, well, the 2005 US Grand Prix, he was absolutely furious and he really wanted to race. There was more to him than meets the eye.

2005 was Prime Kimi! But the car was not reliable enough that year.

From a technical perspective an ideal overtake is very unremarkable, you simply drive past them on a straight with no loss of time or excessive wear on the car but for me I likes 'em fast and I likes 'em sketchy, put the car somewhere it's not supposed to be and somehow get through without contact

Its not my favourite but it makes made me finally respect Lewis's racecraft, 2021 Lewis vs Max Sao Paulo, overtake for the lead , Lewis set Max up in turn 1 with a fake to the inside and i think its turn 4 he pulls off the move. He put him in a compromised line, and honestly setting a grown man like that, is some disrespectful sh*t. If Alonso did that i would have wrote a poem, so hats off

Perez went from P20 to P1, but that was at the end of Lap 1, so ai guess it doesn’t count.

How can you possible say these are some of the greatest overtakes of all time? I feel like that is such a subjective question in general. Especially how different each generation of car is. How is Lewis double overtake better or worse then either one of these? It's just an impossibled question and answer.
