    *****Here is a tip on how to keep from breaking the slide switch. Take an allen wrench that will fit through the slot. Put the short end in and turn it so that it goes across the switch. Make sure you are at the top or bottom of the slot. Then push down just enough to hold the switch down while you pry up on the knob with a flat head screw driver. I use a pair of pliers to pull them off. But, before I do any of that, I heat them up with my heat gun or hair dryer and then pull on them. .*****

      Yep. I just ruined the slide resistors trying to get the knobs off. Why I'm here. Ordered a replacement that doesn't have the defrost button. Hoping I can get the knobs off the replacement and discover whether it has the switch and light for the defrost - if so, swap face plates. Replacing the bulbs with 5-15v LEDs (internal drop resistors). Getting the knobs off - the key is heating them up with a heat gun? The old ones were really on there.

    After watching your video I decided to give it a whirl. I had no lights working on my climate control panel. The slide knobs came off easy with a heat gun (didn't even have to support the switch). The 6v bulbs in the kit you sent me were taller than the originals but there wasn't any clearance issues so I continued on. This was my first attempt at soldering on a circuit board. After re-installing and checking all the functions everything worked great including the 8 new bulbs. Thanks for the kit and video.

    Thanks to AudioXpress and the community for sharing cautions and experiences. I collected all the ideas and also fabricated a slotted heat shield from cereal box cardboard, for heat gun use. I tucked it under the 2 knobs, to protect the facia / front housing. I used a table fork and allen wrench for leverage. For my 03 Monte Carlo unit, I removed the screw holding the PCB to the front facia, which gave more room for the allen wrench to lie across the rheostat tracks for support under the facia slots. After heating a bit, I felt the buttons to see hot hot they were, checking that at least felt warm. The first one popped off. I expect the second was hotter: it slid up slowly. I was concerned I had heated it too much, but seems ok.
    To test before and after, I cut the 9V battery lead off an expired smoke detector. I trimmed the small guage wire leads square at the ends. After clipping to a 9V battery, I just pushed the butt ends against the solder joints of a bulb in the back of the PC board to test the bulb circuit.
    Thanks again to all for experiences!

    Cheap solution is using a LED and adding a resistor, I used 3mm for the two in the center and the rest 5mm all with 330 ohm 1/4W resistors, it was a bit annoying, and I do have some bright spots (maybe using the plastic covers would help), but good enough. Thanks for the info and the pinout for testing it. The slider knobs came off easily using your tip.

    • @Car-Radio-Bulbs

      Well your cheap solution is just that CHEAP junk from China anytime you can buy a hundred led's for under $10 they are junk. If you want a quality led you got to pay a little more like the ones we sell they are made in the USA and they do not require resistors and there are no hot spots or bright spots as you call it. Just perfect even lighting.

    Where can I purchase the slide potentiometers if they are broken?

    • @Car-Radio-Bulbs
      @Car-Radio-Bulbs  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can't buy them new. You need a new climate control or take one out of a junk yard climate control. I have had to fix many of these.

    Any help on how to get the slider knobs off without breaking things?

    • @Car-Radio-Bulbs
      @Car-Radio-Bulbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ******Here is a tip on how to keep from breaking the slide switch. But, before I do any of that, I heat them up with my heat gun or hair dryer and then pull on them. .******

      @fredc8346 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Car-Radio-Bulbs Ok thanks for the ideas. And I had heard of using some heat to help. This part of the job seems to be the key to me as breaking the slider switches means you are off to a recycler or parts store for a whole new one. What you had likely worked just no lighting and you can go to a non working unit just trying to get some new bulbs in it. I think the manufacturer may very well have made this the hangup aspect to mess us up doing a fairly simple repair otherwise. Typical.
