  • What is FIRExTalk?
    The FirexTalk one-day firefighter conference is designed to help fire service communities, organizations and individuals spark conversation and connection through a local TEDx-like experience.
    At a FIRExTalk event, twenty 20 minute “talks on fire” are given by local presenters. Each presentation is professionally video recorded and placed on the FIRExTalk TH-cam channel and website. This sparks conversation and connection at the local and national level. FIRExTalk events are planned and coordinated by FIRExTalk llc.
    About FIRExTalk partnerships
    FIRExTalk is a fire service community event that inspires innovation, leadership, and passionate insights. Each FIRExTalk event is not organized for political reasons, monetary reward or personal gain. The FIRExTalk organization believes in the power of ideas to change the fire service world for the better.
    FIRExTalk llc is seeking the support of local and national companies who can sponsor FIRExTalk events through cash and offer ways to enhance the experience for our attendees.     The vision of FIRExTalk
    FIRExTalk began as a humble experiment. Our hope is the program will be embraced, with passion and dedication, by hundreds - if not thousands - of fire service communities across the United States. FIRExTalk wants to capture 500 “talks on fire” covering all aspects of the fire service. Think of FIRExTalk as an incubator for ideas. Partners should come to FIRExTalk events not only to present ideas, but as learners - to learn from the fire service community. FIRExTalks create an opportunity for this community of thinkers, doers, and leaders to engage in a subject that is meaningful to you.
    From a company's perspective, the FIRExTalk program may seem quite experimental - and, as such, a great opportunity for the partner to experiment. We look forward to hearing from you directly regarding any ideas you might have.

    saving souls on a moments notice in an active environment. What I teach my daughter is that panic kills. It's the people that can think in that environment that make it out alive.

    I've lectured at the university level as well as teaching rifle, pistol, emergency medicine, and other related items. I completely agree with your approach to lecturing. The more "visual aids" you use, the less you connect with the target audience.
    My second point is that I was a professional firefighter (plus having worked in several other public safety fields) as well as having instructed in that field. The leadership I have seen in the fire service was the worse I encountered in all my careers. I sincerely hope my experience was the exception rather than the rule.

    Andy... Really awesome seeing this clip. I did get a chuckle having recently watched your Cleared Hot clip about the “Navy SEALS” movie and your observations. That’s how we feel watching Chicago Fire and Backdraft. As a Marine and a FF/EMT I’ve always tried to apply leadership and training concepts I learned in the Corps to Fire and EMS. Various results of course, but your FIRExTalk was outstanding and relevant. Thinking outside the box is key in both arenas (SpecWar & Emergency Svcs)

    Fantastic presentation Andy. It's interesting, my brother in law is a firefighter. His best friend is a SEAL. Both have a similar personality and both have an impeccable ability to stay calm under fire, even before they embarked on their respective careers.

    What you said about taking the emotional reaction out of things is so true. That's what it took for me to be a calm, clear-headed, and thoughtful leader in my job. Great talk!

    Working in CIC as a watch Supervisor, I was trained to remain calm at all times. Observing other watch sup’s and how their crew reacted when the on duty supervisor allowed emotion into the environment was very revealing. Might not have been total breakdown of the operating environment but it was not operating at peak performance for sure.
    Andy is a pretty sharp guy, even if he never went to OS ‘A’ school.

    Watched this a couple years ago and didn’t know who Andy was then. Funny how it showed up in my feed again. Seriously understated his resume. I’m a former 11B. Have two former seals now in our small department. Some parallels are similar-honestly, leadership is universal-but being in the fire service is like training hard for a war you may or may not fight. You have no idea when it’s going to come, but it could come at any moment. I train hard, and so do the other guys who are like me, mostly because I know we can mitigate the problem faster if we’re fit, well equipped, and highly trained. For the critics, I’m pretty sure that mindset transcends to Navy SEALS and all other SOF units.

    Thank you Andy, this was excellent. I like the part about self awareness and setting trigger alerts, and maintaining the 30,000- foot-view. Nice reminders and good stuff! So glad I watched it!

    I remember during casualty drills on submarines the observers would just step in and say "these three guys are dead"
    They always chose the most senior guys. Then the rest of the damage control party would have to step up.
    On a submerged submarine, no one is coming to save you.
    You do the job in front of you or you die and take the rest of the crew with you.

    Situational awareness. Learn your trigger points and rub it in until you can't handle it and back it out and pull out. Assess the situation and push in again until you reach your threshold. Then train it the same way in your man. Learn to focus and be aware under fire and infect others.

    Phenomenal!! Dude is everything I wanted to be since middle school. Made a fee mistakes along the way, but I accepted The Lord Jesus Christ as my savior and Lord, so now I have everything I could possibly need in this life and the next

    Tell me about the toys for the plane is it a golden plated over a nickel or aluminum. I’ve never seen one in real life I don’t looks like it has very calculated weight And I love analyzing the history is precious metals and warfare

      Not even in the same Universe. That's like comparing a CEO to a floor sweeper. A floor sweeper with a bad work ethic.

      JB91710 more like a floor sweeper to a window wiper. People often go from one job to the other. Same deal essentially same type of person just different jobs. Of course it varies by department the caliber of men but I know fire fighters who would do extremely well in the seal team.

      @@JB91710 I guess you reflect your situation, in your town or city. In FDNY, have seen many different situations in different areas. On leadership he is spot on......have worked with many who were excellent leaders, throughout their careers. In. Busy areas they are the most motivated, highly trained and can deal with any situation, anytime, always ready. Have worked in slower companies, sometimes less motivated, but many leaders came from busy areas....they know their stuff. I guess i was lucky to have worked with such professionals. The 10% rule sometimes applies.

      @@bill2736 Then how come the FDNY are one of the Worst departments in the world? Their performances dictate that! Not that 99.9% of humans could even see it. Watch these videos and ask the question, "If I can see the burning material, why aren't they getting tank water on it within the first minute to stop extension while eliminating the threat to Protect the victims and entering firefighters?"     Hey mate, why don't you ever talk about the other SO groups. The Beret's, Delta, Air Force Fac's and Para Rescue, and Rangers. Marine Force Recon is pretty good also. In Vietnam the toughest bunch that I saw were LRRP's (Long Range Recon Patrol)

    Wow really reminded me not to be like this guy. Ive met real police,fire,EMS and real military personnel including a seal and a ranger and they had real leadership.First clearly to be a seal you must love your job and do it with leadership what this guy doesn't have and second dont be to quick to judge and point out mistakes and flip it to an opinion what this guy did.question what does military have to do with fire fighting? This guy talking about military and i have not heard anything of fire fighting.

      Mmmmmmmm.....I think the title clearly mentions 'Leadership', which can be a tad useful in the fire service....the military.....or even operating a trash company. p.s.-- the best way to learn is often through our mistakes....he's not throwing shade, just taking ego out of the equation....
