- In this powerful talk, firefighter and paramedic Ben Thompson shares what he learned about helping people while proactively trying to improve the health of citizens in his community.
Ben Thompson currently serves as a Lieutenant for the City of Birmingham Fire Department. In February of 2016, he was put in charge of creating a new program called Birmingham Fire and Rescue C.A.R.E.S. (Community Assistance, Referrals and Education Services), which is aimed at decreasing the dependency on emergency services by the city's most frequent 911 callers. During the same year, Ben was honored as the Emergency Service Provider of the year. Ben is also a talented writer. In 2015, Ben won a Hackney Literary Award Winner for his short fiction story, “Blue Collar and a Short Chain.”
Prior to joining the fire department, Ben delivered flowers, traded mutual funds, worked a season in Alaska as a commercial fisherman, and spent a homeless summer in Hawaii where he met his wife Katie.
When Ben isn’t writing or saving lives, he enjoys reading, playing with his children, learning about Birmingham’s history, and visiting Jim Reed’s Books. @@spilledsoju03 yes i am, i suggest going to a fire department for some interesting calls, otherwise youll be stuck in transport most likely and thats a real waste of training.

Viewing this SHOULD be part of school curriculum in our country. (If only) Not simply as an example of how to be an great public servant, but how to be an outstanding human being and citizen. Our young people are bereft of Role Models and Heroes. You embody the American spirit. Well done and best wishes for many years of selfless, satisfying service.
As an EM"T educator you brought me to tears! You really captured the reason we are here. To help people and to pause and ask, "What can I do to help you?" Too often we teach students to be confident and to be knowledgeable. This was a nice change and a point that has been missed in many classrooms,,,, we do not know everything and it isn't always what it appears to be.

Often we get frustrated at frequent flyers that call multiple times for minor symptoms.
This is a good reminder that we don’t know what our patient is going through, and that our preconceived notions are often very wrong.

Watched this prior to going to take my NREMT test. Before watching this I just wanted to pass this test and be an emt. Now I want to pass this test to help someone like this man has

Ben is my nephew... he is truly exceptional... he is married to my niece Katie who is a nurse. They and their children lead by example and give me hope for our world daily. We love you Ben! Keep on with your handsome self!!❤
Great message. I’m proud to say I’ve done this. Walk in Someone else’s shoes. I very rarely have shared my life with a patient but I let them see I’m human like them. Nice to see others do the same. Pass it on ♥️🚑🚒🇺🇸
Our FIre Department started this a few years ago with amazing results. We call it Integrated Mobile Health. It’s great for frequent flyers and follow up of vulnerable people.

I’m 26 years old and have been a firefighter for two years. You see a lot of great and amazing things.. but a lot of sad things. Crazy things happen, but let me tell you.. we wouldn’t have it any other way! In our job, there’s a lot to learn.. the world is ever changing!

22 years in the job and this guy summed it all up. This is what being a firefighter paramedic is all about.
I love the community paramedic system. That it can ease the burden of many responders. Who were already overworked and underpaid.

I was previously a Spanish interpreter and medical secretary at a clinic. It taught me how to be proactive. Being a psw , I was able to learn patience from my seniors and truly fell in love with them . My next step is paramedic school in September and a big part of me is drawn to the fact that paramedics work with seniors very often . I wish everyone could be a personal support worker first doing at home care so you can experience being a caregiver and empathizing with their physical and emotional needs. I’m super excited to begin my next step in healthcare

Brother this is next level, straight from GOD mission stuff. I have been in EMS since 1988 and just stopped working as a Medic last week. You my friend have been given a Mission from God.

Thank you. Im a Paramedic, RN with 30 years experience in the ambulance, ER and helicopter. Nicely said. Everywhere I've worked, the frustration with "frequent flyers" is a constant topic of conversation. It helps to consider things from their perspective.
Nah, they are still annoying. Many are just blatantly abusing EMS. And nothing is done about it.
Inspiring speech sir. Thanks for the motivation and reminder for all of us, not only in ems but all fields and situations, to seek out the greater good that resides within all of us. Important to forget our given title every now and again to remember just why we began chasing it in the first place.

i really do think we need an off-branch of the 911 system to do exactly whats portrayed here. there are people who call 911 because they need non-emergency help, and if the city, county, and/or state is gonna have to pay for the ambulance (911 response) then why cant we setup a non emergency agency to take those calls, like i said the money is being spent regardless, i think if it were thought about in this manner costs could be reduced dramatically. just my thoughts, especially in areas with a high % of retirees..
