    For those who need it for school:
    A great leader is a person who is aware of modern trends and incorporates them into their work to form a better bond with their team. They are not head down, and connects with you, trust you, and cooperates with you to reach your common goal. They dare to be different and are emotionally and mentally stable enough to leave traditions behind to improve. They understand that having a more diverse network in their team will help achieve greater levels of understanding because it provides a more diverse mindset.

      in the definition as it says "who is aware of modern trends and incorporates them into their work" but what about those who learn of it through tough times in their lives, wouldn't it be some what of a tradition or is there a word to it? Cause as the definition says "They dare to be different and are emotionally and mentally stable enough to leave traditions behind to improve" but that's just after the moment of learning from failure.
      From Nelson Mandala, it is innovative but the same method has already been applied thousands of years back in the past civilization but to our time it is innovative. This is not my field of expertise but I tend to reason with math because everything in this universe tends to repeat, that is why I question the awarenesses of modern trends" part when lessons have already existed before. That or I am misunderstanding.

    1. Anticipate changes and prepare for it.
    2. Network outside of your inner circle to get others to help you or collaborate with your goals
    3. Lead with flexibility. Have awareness of who are the people in your group and how to approach them. Past methods don’t determine future success which means try something new and customize it for your team l.

    Taking responsibility for a group and sacrificing one's desires for the greater good is typically what makes great leaders. They don't ask others to do what they, themselves, are unwilling to do or haven't yet done.

    Leadership is about service. A leader's influence motivates and helps people around him/her to become their best selves. Leadership is about setting and achieving goals and solving problems decisively and quickly.

    Listen to others with empathy, understanding the back story of others, ethicals towards others, in one's own self, effectively communicating all areas, think outside the box! Except changes, Except new ideas, Excepting!! Don't rule with an iron fist.. Just be kind to what others are living like, understand how they can help and in what types of ways..
    Not everyone learns by reading, not everyone learns by speeches, not everyone learns by hands one.. everyone is different everyone has a special part to bring together a whole!!

    A leader can appear in different forms, but the similar thread between them all is integrity between your words and actions, ability to learn and adapt, and someone who welcomes risk into their life.

    This TED is about important issues that maybe are not too obvious
    1. Do you do with your time? Are you just reacting to things in your life? Or are you designing your future?
    2. Can you connect to people that think differently from you? Or people that listen to the same things, think the same as you. For me, this is not only for leaders but for people in general. Can you listen to different ideas? Or change your opinion about something?
    3. Courage to try something, this is not easy at all, take new challenges in your life, do something different.
    This TED for me is not about behavior, but precisely about mindset.

    Interesting points here and I believe the whole thought applies not only to leaders but to all people (who have a dream, who wants to be better than he was before) in general.
    I especially like and agree her thought on the 21st century as an uncertain thing that is why we should not rely on the "predictability off yesterday" but shape our present for the future. Her talk is actually calling all of us to be brave for what we want for our life.

    I agree Roselinde. One time workshops aren't a sustainable solution to transform on'e's leadership. As we say "Our issues were created in relation to another human being; therefore our wounds can only be healed in relation to one another. Often our wounds were created in your unconscious, in your iceberg. Our job is to help crack your code and melt your iceberg."

    Honestly, in my opinion it is always much more simple than some people make it out to be: once we understand that the ideas of control, power, and ability are much more rooted in how we think, and not in the initial or transitory circumstances at hand--we will then hold to key to being good at something, anything.
    Man is an idea, of sorts, that he himself learns from his influences (whether it's immediate family or teachers) and then has to unlearn so that he can become what he wishes, and ultimately chooses, to be.
    I love to talk about these types of things and I just want to improve with each day as a person--to become smarter, better, and stronger. If you find me to be genuine, give me a chance and bring me your life experience and opinions so that we may both grow. That is all, no more no less

    Leadership is about growing and improvement. Being willing to step out the comfort zone and involving in diversity network would have the potential to change us and fix us so that we could reach or even beyond others expectation.

    Leadership is ever evolving. Early leadership had to be directive and authoritative relative to the knowledge and sophistication of the team you lead. For example in medieval times a leader would rely more on strength and power and authority. Today with better education and sophistication leadership has evolved and Roselinde is on the right track for 21st century leadership.
    having served in the Military in the 70's & 80's and then moving into business and now private practice I have watch how effective leaders have had to change in both areas over the last 40 years or so.
    There are some basic and fundamental principles of leadership that will stand the test of time but also as civilization evolves, leaders need to evolve in their styles, knowledge and application as well.

    I always claim leadership in school group work and I take the risks I make sure everyone is doing it right and I tell them what to do if they say that my way is not efficient I take the risk and the longer they stall the more time they lose because I know what’s good on groupwork

    I would add, making sacrifices, putting others and the overall goal before yourself and your personal adgenda. Those that are willing to put in the 110% to do what needs to be done will see good success.

    Bad TED, but good points in the end. A good leader can see in the future of (technological) development with the help of his network with great diversity and doesn't hesitate to make the next step with the needed sacrifices. But you're not a leader if you cant inspire others to follow you. Your followers is whats make you a leader. On your own you're just someone people call crazy. Thats why first followers are more important than people who could be great leaders.

    I am studying a Management and Leadership module as part of my uni course and i have to say it is the most tedious, long winded and repetitive subject its just theories and diagrams of "types" of leadership with no conclusions or point its just an irrelevant study

    What makes a great leader? One who thrives in what they do differently. Great leaders are not head down, they see around corners, shaping their future not just reacting to it.     The points she makes are already some of theories of standard traits of leadership, anyway. The first one is Initiative (just drawing up plans to counter possible threats). General Montgomery talks about when he says "Make the enemy dance to your beat". In other words: in order to beat someone, they have to react to your plan not vice versa. The second is simply learning to man manage (but it's getting a lot harder -- since the spectrum is now over many languages. The third is obvious, just plain old courage (Which is held to be the most highest of all virtues), which isn't about taking a certain course of action, but taking the shit if it fucks up. To me what people seem to miss is that leadership is not a job, it's a lifestyle. It's not a 9-5 thing, you'll be doing it for the rest of your life. It's hard work, stressful and, if you are a servant leader, there's not much reward. Besides, with the ability to communicate and get information faster then ever before, I'm afraid leadership is a dying skill.

      She did describe what makes a good leader, just not in a straightforward way. Like when she mentioned "Are you courageous enough to abandon the past?", she explained that a great leader is made when they step out of their comfort zone.

    I am reminded by the Sonnet Ozymandias by Shelley. Great men or leaders to be politically correct are like great wine. They age well and improve but someday they will sour and be discarded.
    I prefer the image of a great world, not just a great society or even less a great person.
    A great world has in it's core a belief system that is not Human centric but Earth centric. That requires the participation of the Humans to believe that they are part of the Earth, not it's masters.
    And thus the Human's have their masters and they have to understand their fallibility and temporal nature.
    After all, great people are really often being of good fortune, in the right place and time to be part of even if somewhat of a critical part of a crucial development. The person that discovered fire was not the inventor of fire.
    And people need to remember that we are actually just a species in the evolutionary course of Nature. There could come a time when the environment changes in ways that does not support our presence and possibly prefers other species instead. We would be foolish and even a little arrogant to believe that we are here to stay. Surely, history, especially Natural History argues to the contrary.
    So swallow the pride of ones vanity and ask, "Did I participate in a better world, not just a better company or country?".

    The leader becomes a role model and determines what the groups under him will do. But not all leaders are good and have character that can be imitated. From the video I know that being a leader is not easy. I agree that great leaders are those who prepare not for the comfortable predictability of yesterday, but also for the realities of today and the unknown possibilities of tomorrow.

      ***** If i need a leader then i must be unable to self control my self and set my own rules.
      I do believe i dont need any leader and neither u.
      Me and those around me could set our own rules if they ever believe they have mind of their own.

      Monsieurr Claw I wouldnt called that friend leader. Its up to me to follow him and my personal rule is not to do things i dont like for the sake of others
      A leader by definition should some who gives orders to others, now if he has proven worthy of that authority and the other failed to centralise power then fine.
      Anyway its what we live everyday and we dont like.
      A leader takes point and i follow, inspiration is a way different story imo. I see ur point but i think its abit off.
      Lets talk about the leader in a class or in ur job or in ur town - country.
      Ur lower than him he is the alpha and u the Ωmega . Again if he proved his superiotiy we could play along but we know its not like that most of the times.
      In fact we are ruled by incopedent arogant ppl that cant tight their shoo laces.

      rurounisld You are absolutely correct; even the assumptions behind the word "leader" are detesting. Sacrificing your talents, energies, creativity, and abilities for an institution/corporation that you have no life stake in is the lowest form of existence in my opinion. Leading for a paycheck is not leading, it is giving orders. Leaders mostly exist in offices and cubicles, which is the last place that authority should be exercised. Make your own way, make your own choices.

      Leaders make mistake too, so dont be afraid of that.
      "Leaders mostly exist in offices" exaclty thats what a leader today is!
      Ppl shouldnt get comfused by this model of a modest man with skills. Wich sounds good...
