Cross-Gen PS4 Games Might Be Around Longer Than Usual

  • 2023 is coming up quick! And with so many game events over like TGS and Summer Game Fest, we now have a clearer view of what games are coming out next year. And there's still a good amount of AAA games headed to PS4 next to PS5. What gives? When will cross-gen be over and why is it seemingly different this time around compared to other generations? All valid questions, and we try to tackle them here. Don't expect me to tackle anything else though, quite frankly I'm getting tired.

Too many PS4 owners (including myself) have lost interest in getting a PS5, the lack of availability and high prices have put many people off, I will likely now wait for a slim/smaller model and cheaper prices with console and games - after being so exited for PS5, I've almost forgot it even exists as you never see it!!
Edit: I live in the UK which is totally different to the US (where they may be more available!)
Edit: I now see ps5's everywhere I go , but I'm happy to wait for new model - I've actually bought a PS2 instead, and the full content, fully complete games with no patches to download are a breath of fresh air compared to modern gaming!!
Edit/edit - I must admit that I have lost interest in modern gaming and may not even bother with this generation at all!

Sony has to force developers to stop making PS4 games by imposing restrictions on the PS5 SDK, but really if the games are going to be forward compatible anyway, then what's the rush with retiring the PS4? The graphical differences are minor, the performance is better, but the PS5 ought to be used for more demanding games. From the period between the PS3 to the PS4 was the biggest jump advancement wise, discs are larger for more content, but developers are resorting to bad habits: why does every game have to be 100GB? Why don't they optimize their games more? We have better compression these days which means older hardware can benefit from reduced texture/video/audio sizes. All the games seem to be getting shorter, yeah a bunch of them are developed to be seen on 4k TVs, but I feel like space is being wasted on things we only look at for a few seconds out of the total playtime. Skyrim fit on one dvd over ten years ago, it had hundreds of hours worth content, and installed on a drive it was around 18GB, so I have to ask-why are we wasting 100GB or more for games that we can play fully in one afternoon? The wheel keeps getting reinvented for no good reason, and I'm sure there will be apologists here saying its good for a rock to have an 8k or 16k texture, wasting 100MB or more in storage, in one game, this or next generation.

For example Bungie's Destiny launched on PS3/X360 and PS4/X1, the final expansion for that game left the older generation hardware behind, the main hold back in that case was the disparity of RAM available:
The PS3/360 had 256+256MB(CPU and GPU)/512MB(Unified) respectively while the PS4 and X1 had 8GB Unified.
This however, is a bigger difference than the PS4/X1 to PS5/XSX, which essentially have double the RAM of the previous base consoles did.

The biggest change this gen was that architecture remained relatively similar. This brought consoles more in line with PC’s, where games are made to be scalable. The reason we didn’t get cross gen titles for PS2 and PS3, or PS3 and PS4, is that the architecture differed so drastically they needed completely separate versions of games for each system, and why we also didn’t really see any backwards compatibility either. If we had back compat, I’m sure we would have seen plenty of croas gen in previous transition years as well. The closest we got was Sony bringing Last of Us over to the PS4, which was not as easy as it would be today when, say, bringing the Last of Us Part 2 over to PS5 with enhanced features like we saw this gen. Had it not been for this particular aspect I don’t think we would have seen much cross gen.

Crash of the Titans-Xbox 360, PS2, Nintendo Wii.
Sonic Unleashed-PS3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PS2.
While some of the games here were separate versions, they were versions that also took effort to do. People today complain that the new games are being "held back." How do we know the next gen versions of those games weren't "held back" since they needed unique versions for previous consoles, surely taking resources away from the newer games? And we had plenty of PS3/PS4 cross gen games as well including Wolfenstein The New Order and Metal Gear Solid 5.

I really believe this generation is gonna have a 10 year lifespan. First, the obvious scarce of the consoles in the first years of the gen, and second, I think the companies did a better job of including technologies not only for today, but also for the years to come.
For example, when the PS4 came out, I always thought it was a bit behind current technology. Although it was Full HD 1080p, many games ran only at 30 fps, when in those days it was already common for PCs to have very high refresh rates, and this is just to give an example.

    • @ArcadianGenesis

Yes, PS5 and Xbox Series X are much more comparable to gaming PCs and more future-proof than PS4 or Xbox One were. Hence the need for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Just the fact that they needed to release mid-generation upgrades proves that. They needed to upgrade mainly for 4K output, because 4K TVs started becoming common in the mid 2010s.
This generation, we already have 4K and 120 Hz output. Why would we need an upgrade anytime soon? There is no incentive for 8K right now. And TVs aren't going over 120 Hz anytime soon. If anything, we just need more games with native 4K _and_ 120 Hz at the same time. Currently we tend to get upscaled 4K with high framerate, or native 4K with lower framerate. It's nice that we can choose, but it would be better if we didn't have to choose.

The architecture changed drastically between PS2 and PS3 as well as between the PS3 and PS4, which is why we also didn’t get back compat. The architecture this gen is relatively similar, meaning games can scale like they do with PC releases, making it much easier to just scale down God of War Ragnarok for last gen or scale it up for current gen, whatever the case may be there. It's not like they're sitting on millions of units and nobody is buying them, most PS5 units eventually land in gamer's hands, the difference being that some idiots caved and paid more for it.
If anything scalping might be good for sony's profitability because people who can afford scalper's prices might have more dispensible income overall and buy more games. And anybody who paid 700+ bucks for a PS5 has clearly shown that they are willing to spend a lot of money for gaming.
It sounds terrible but if distribution was more "fair" and in turn more kids had gotten a PS5 for christmas, then those aren't often the customers with the most purchasing power. So the average per-unit sales of Software (digital and physical) might actually be better if, because of scalpers, the average PS5-owner is more wealthy.
Sony really isn't making all that much (if any) money on the actual PS5 hardware, so scalpers steering their consoles into wealthier gamer's hands might be quite good for Sony.

I think if covid had not happened at all we very more than likely wouldn't be having this conversation, considering ps5s in particular are going through manufacturing issues even still. Sony could gamble on ps5 for the long term but for short term sales the ps4 might be a better bet to hold on until production ramps up and the overall player base catches up and lets go of ps4 all together.

When they started using a more pc oriented architecture this was bound to happen. What I find interesting is that pc gamers expect games to keep working on older hardware for a while, 3080 owners for example don’t think their games are being “hold back” because better performance and resolution is all they’re expecting. Not the same with ps5 owners, where a lot expect some kind of exclusivity on their platforms.

We are in a totally different situation to previous transitions. Firstly the whole availability means, as you say, a lot of people still have not moved over to PS5 yet so the PS4 still needs support.
Plus, with there being the PS4 Pro, there is a much smaller difference between PS4 Pro and PS5 than there was between previous generations when it comes to graphics etc. Yes the PS5 has ray tracing etc but if you look at the graphics between a game running on a Pro and on a PS5, the difference is minimal compared to PS1 to PS2, PS2 to PS3 and PS3 to PS4, where there was a much bigger improvement. Also factor in the upgrade option this gen, and anyone still with a PS4 at least knows they will be able to buy games and upgrade later, which was not really a thing before with a few exceptions.
Basically though it all boils down to availability of the PS5. Once there is more units out there in retail stores, the Sony developers will dial back on PS4 versions as they will want to incentivise people to upgrade. Right now it would be a mistake to release the new GOW only on PS5 as a lot of people would miss out and hurt game sales.
Oh and GT6 was a really weird decision on Sony's part. That is the only GT game I have never played as it was actually released after the PS4 came out, so I was no longer buying PS3 games.
Made absolutely zero sense for them to not develop it for the PS4 as a launch title, and we had to wait another four years for an actual GT game for the PS4

I've been of the opinion, which was covered here near the end, that it's the architecture that has kept PS4 releases going. There's really no downside in releasing a lower fidelity version of a game to get it in front of more people who aren't willing to spend on the latest generation right now. It's not like the old days where every new console was a completely different beast, it's all more standardized which I think overall is a good thing for developers.

They have to extend making games for ps4. You know why. When it had the tech shortage. Sony decided to remake ps4 and sell it back instead of making more ps5. Due to scalpers buying it out overpricing the console to consumers. So majority of the people for Christmas end up buying a ps4 instead. So no matter how old. It should still last. Especally the ps4 pro.

Good video, but I feel like it really underplayed the impact of COVID. Both Sony and Microsoft were gearing up to have massive new console launches right as an unforeseen GLOBAL PANDEMIC affected nearly every industry on the planet. It was unsafe to go to the store and wait in a massive line for a new piece of hardware, both companies had to shut down production of the new consoles, devs moved to remote work in a hurry and were left unprepared. If anything Sony needed cross-gen games to happen just so they could recoup their losses. The More standardized architecture of PS4 and PS5 must have been a godsend in those days

I agree, if a company can’t provide enough it’s for several reasons, the main being to keep the price high because people will pay more if it’s difficult to obtain, the other is manufacturer and supply issues.

I think it has to do with the fact that most people don't wanna buy a PS5 yet or simply just can't buy it, and still have a fully functioning PS4 at their home that can still squeeze out some performance. I would predict that 2024 and beyond, there will still be newer titles released on last-gen consoles (PS4, Xbox One) and once triple A companies are pretty much done with games developed on those aging consoles, then it's up to indie companies to release their games as many as they want until Sony / MS / Nintendo decided to close the games' submission for old machines.

The big thing you never talked about in this video is Japanese software sales. Over there PS4 frequently beats PS5 software sales often by crazy 70:30 sales ratio splits. A lot of the games getting ps4 versions announced for 2023/2024 are coming from Japanese companies like Capcom and RGG Studios.
The other big factor you neglected to discuss is the Switch factor. Keep games cross gen makes it easier to port games to Switch, which has a very strong market for game sales especially in Asia.
