I guess I will be the first to share a story of seeing the White Lady. Not sure what year it was but I was around 20. So around 1990. My best friend and I were interested in this legend. I asked around of the location. It was summer time, so we stopped and got a couple of 6 packs. Drove up the mountain, which is not fun like you said. We were told of a dirt road to drive back. We found it, near Devil's Elbow. Never heard it called that, but fits it. We drove back the road, turned around, facing out. We cracked open a beer and started waiting. After a few moments, we saw several cars going down Devil's Elbow. Then we saw a light the other direction. Then a little closer. And closer yet. No we were not drunk, we were still on our first beer. Then it happened. A bright light, maybe 2 feet wide and 5 feet tall, right on the hood of my best friend's car. We just looked at each, then back. It was gone. And so we're we. Lol. We threw the beer out the window and flew out the dirt road. It is a memory I will never forget.

Ok I was never one to believe in ghosts but I’ll share my story on why I never hunt on wopsy mountain again. My buddies and I had gotten big into coyote hunting a few years back. It’s perfectly legal to hunt them at night. Wopsy is a perfect spot for them. We took a friend from college up from out of state to give him the experience. That windy December night was perfect for it. Fresh snow a little breeze and a full moon. We parked the car and went into the woods. Immediately we heard coyotes and decided to follow and stalk them. I’ve hunted with my buddy up there for years and I know my way well up there. Somehow we ended up lost. We were in a small clearing inside some thick small pines. I looked down and say boot prints. They were fresh, fresh enough that for 12 pm at night it was weird. We decided to follow them a little bit and see where they went. It wasn’t typical because they were coming the opposite direction from the parking spot. We followed them back and saw what we couldn’t believe. An old cabin that looked like it hadn’t been touched for years. The boot prints stopped at the stairs which was odd because if someone went on them there would be snow on the stairs. It wouldn’t melt I thought because it was too cold to melt at night seeing how fresh they were. We all got a chill at the same time. A feeling we hadn’t got before but did at the same time. We just decided this was too weird. Never had I seen that cabin before in those woods. I know we weren’t trespassing and this was wopsy game lands as well. We made it back to the truck and talked ab it the whole way home. Since then we’ve tried many many times to find the cabin we saw that night but never could seem to locate it again. Wopsy is the place that nobody should venture alone, after that experience we don’t go back without at least three of us because that night shook me to the core.

Isn’t it amazing how quickly our grand projects return to earth? Barely 100 years and so little is left.
Similarly there is the Altoona Speedway (which I have not done a video on) that was the place to be when it was there... now, not even a splinter exists.

I'm from Altoona and have been fascinated with the Wopsy Hotel for many years.
It would be great if there was more about it out in the public domain.
Great information about the hotel and train line that I didn't know as a local. My uncle Poke Spiridigliozzi actually went over Devils Elbow in the mid 80s riding in the back of a truck. He was in leg and arm casts for almost a year. I remember being about 5 and visiting him in the Altoona hospital and kicking his catheter line hahaha he was never that mad at me before or after but I didn't understand the severity at my age lol. I always hit wopsy on my motorcycle but these days I don't wind it out because I have grown and understand how annoying that would be as a local resident. Plenty of uninhabited mountain roads for getting stupid 😂
Wow! I know it’s been a year or so but I Just stumbled across this video while searching for a backstory on two Joe Servello paintings I purchased last weekend. Both paintings contain a mysterious looking woman and a moon in the background...one is pink themed and the other blue themed. Beautiful art from an antique shop in Hollidaysburg....not the white lady though. Anyways, I’m so thrilled with seeing this video! I lived on top of Wopsy Mountain for the first 10 years of my life about two minutes driving distance from where you filmed this video. My father built us a house up there in the middle of the woods. My parents bought ground up there in the 90s. My grandmother still lives up there along with some other family that bought ground. I’ve been to all the places you’ve shown in this video accept that abandoned house/cottage...that I can remember. We used to go through the woods on that mountain constantly on four wheelers and razors...sometimes still do. My dad and brother do still for sure. We drove on buckhorn or Juniata gap road every day up the mountain around devils elbow and I never saw the white lady nor ever thought about her much. I am curious if devils elbow is where I think it is on the juniata gap mountain road or if it’s actually on the Buckhorn. The restaurant you show called the White Lady Tavern used to be called something else but in the 90s when I was a child we ate there basically every Friday night. I still remember each table had a lit candle with this pointy glass topper. It is the sort of restaurant that had amazing food....steak, seafood, everything and it is crazy to me now because I don’t think it’s anything anymore....looks like someone owned the building but it’s vacant looking...the parking lot has these tall wooden poles all around it so people stay out of the parking lot I think....heard it may be turned into a medical type facility which would be very odd in my opinion. I know the area up there so well. I have family that live directly beside the power line up there and back in the woods near there and off Skyline Drive....all within a mile or so of where you are here. Loved the video and I’ve always had an interest in the Wopsononock Resort!! Also, I like the White Lady story as well and would love to come across some of the art of her. This is great!
I am really glad you enjoyed the video. I am also curious regarding Devils Elbow… I know exactly where you are talking about on the Juniata Gap mountain road. That is where I originally thought it was located until other information was claiming it was on Buckhorn. For the majority, my videos are pretty much kept "local'esque" to the area. I have started spreading out more, but am keeping it all within Pennsylvania (maybe if I get enough viewers I will head out of state). Check out some of the other videos... I think I have about a dozen or so in the Altoona area. I haven't done the mines up near Wopsy yet, but they are on the list... as well as (if all goes well) the remnants of the ParkForest site.
To bad you were traveling down the wrong road. Many people believe that route 36 is that road but your about a mile or two off. The Devil's Elbow as it's called is no longer traveled. I found it while hunting about 40 years ago but didn't know it at that time. Today it's mostly a path through the woods. I can only recall the number of times that can be counted on one hand with a couple of fingers left over where the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, one of those times was on the Devil's Elbow. The feeling that someone was watching you but much more, a place you just didn't want to be. At the time it was just a old logging road to me but later in life after researching something else I found it to be much,much more. Before the narrow gauge rail there was a road, a logging road that was used by the local's to get to the Wopsy hotel. I came cross some very old railroad maps, since Altoona is a railroad town build by the railroad. In 1849 the railroad started mapping the area and keep up with that mapping through the years. I found railroad documents stating that a narrow gauge track was laid over a logging road as this road was deemed to dangerous for horse and wagon and a new road was built because of the number of accidents. That new road is route 36. For sometime I wanted to revisit that old road with that sharp bend and 1000 foot drop but I have been reluctant to do so after my first visit.
If you can get me ANY material on that location, I would gladly go back and credit you. My maps do not show a different road or trail, nor any other different blazes made by the railroaders of that time. Perhaps what you found or have is one of those famously and purposefully "lost" documents. Hello Scotts ODDySEEy, just getting back with you about your reply. I like what you're doing, and you asked me if I had any ideas on what else that would appeal to me. I don't know if I could really help you but all in all just keep using something fresh, something that hasn't been used over and over because there's a lot of these programs on the internet these days and that could be a tall order but not impossible. From Asheville on down route 53 there are a total of #3 routes UP over the Mt.
The smallest, most winding & middle route is where I saw her cross in front of me in '89.

I'm not one for ghost tales, but I do love history. I grew up in Altoona and frequented Wopsy and many other areas in the region. I've always been fascinated with the history of the hotel and the rail line. I believe there are still remnants of the rail line in the woods below. I know the steel was scrapped 100 years ago, but the path used is still there and visible on state lidar imagery and some aerial imagery captured in winter when the leaves are down. I havent been back to altoona for a while, but plan to explore when I can (if it's not private property).
You are absolutely correct in all of your assertations... including the last part of "private property". That is what halted my progress. ;)
Great video, love the images of the old Wopsy Hotel and railroad! I grew up on the Lookout road and have many fond memories walking/riding my bike up there in the summer as a child with my siblings.
I cannot argue how beautiful it is up on that hill during the summer... winter, well, not so much.
there is also a tunnel outside of altoona i’m pretty sure the railroad to go to the hotel because it’s shut down it always gives me weird vibes and it’s said that if you stop in the tunnel in the middle of the night and say “white lady white lady i stole your baby” she will appear in your back seat and scream then after the encounter if you are a women you will longer be able to have children
Unrelated, but I've also heard the single lane tunnel at the horseshoe curve is haunted. At midnight, flash your highbeams three times, and stop in the middle of the tunnel. You will hear scratching on the outside of your car.

my Grandma Bertha Wagner lived in fallentimber atop of mountain, I was there till age 4, and I remember being told this ghost story forever. My mom told me once her and my dad went parking and there was knocking outside the car and they got the heck out of there. This story is actually one of my core memories:D
Being a "non believer" and searching for answers... I will be honest with you... I would LOVE to have the scare of my life that I could not explain. It would be wonderful.
I have grown up and still live in Gallitzin, which is close to the Buckhorn and Wopsy Mt. We have frequented the road many times, but we have never seen the White Lady. My aunt actually lives down past Devil's Elbow, and she has never seen her, but my uncle has. He saw her when he was going up Devil's Elbow, but it was very briefly. He saw her lantern light as he came right up Devil's Elbow, and then she was gone in like 2 seconds, and he was pretty spooked.

The rail line went from Juniata gap area near the prr main line in Altoona, to Dean PA along rt53 north of Ashville.
I've heard of the white lady on rt 36 not the wopsy mtn rd. (The sign you have a clip of). Wopsy hotel is on a diff road.
I used to drive up n down all the mtn roads. Esp hsc and 36 at night.

I was trying to figure out where to put Jack's song... and then I realized it was dark out. Then I thought... well, what the heck, let's go look for the White Lady. And it all came together.
You have done the work. You have a great grasp of what was there in Pennsylvania right directly after turn of the century. Tell me that this is the country that won those two great world wars? I think we have been deceived on the grandest of scales. 100 years of degrading is what Pennsylvania has experienced post WW's.
With all of your off color/topic comments (of which I totally understand what you are talking about) this one, out of all of them, may be the understatement of the century. It is so much worse... and then to look at the "modern" day people and not feel apathy for their lack of common knowledge, let alone basic education, history, science, or even the arts. I'm currently majoring in history at Penn State Altoona, and I'm surprised with the amount of history surrounding the area. My friends and I went on a haunted tour around the campus where a professor explained the history of the campus and the hauntings that were on and around campus. The last story he told us was the White Lady of Wopsy Mountain, and now my friends and I are interested in going to the lookout to search for her. Thanks for the video.
Remember to keep your mind OPEN, FOCUSED, and do not judge people or stories from the past. They lived in a completely different culture than we do now and thought VERY differently.

Fantastic finding the original site of the hotel. About a year ago somehow I learned of it online and the narrow gauge RR. I found an old RR map of that line and IIRC the stop for the hotel but not the site of the hotel. I had a vague idea but where I thought it may be looked like private property. Super cool video.
I could not get over to the narrow rr site. The home owners were not there while I was up on the mountain. I did not want to trespass.

As a local Altoona resident I was excited to come across your video. Nearly 100 years ago my paternal ancestors owned farm land on Wopsy mountain. I grew up hearing the legend and stories. But I have a family story of my own. When my father was a young boy, his father and uncle came home from a fishing trip off of Wopsy. Shaken and uncertain to share what just happened, they finally got the words out. "I think we just picked up the lady in white."
Now my grandfather was not a comical or imaginative man. He was always serious, god fearing reasonable man. So a story of this nature isn't something he would ever joke about nor make up.
With that said, I'll share the story that my father heard his dad and uncle tell him.
My grandfather said that as they passed Skyline drive, down the mountain they saw a lady walking toward Altoona. She wasn't wearing a wedding dress as the legend goes. She was wearing a long dress, looking more like a summer dress. She had long dark hair and fair skin. They pulled the car over and asked her if she was okay and in need of help. The lady only asked for a ride to the bottom of the mountain. They obliged and she got into the back seat. Back on the road down the mountain, my grandfather asked a few questions but the lady only responded with "Pray for me." As the men turned to the back seat, they found it empty. The lady was gone. Vanished......
Those few words "Pray for me" stuck in their mind with such an emotional impact. To this day, all of my family has sworn to this account. I myself have tried to see her for myself. I traveled that mountain countless times either biking, hiking, driving, going to the look out and even going fishing trying to retrace my family's steps. Only once have I had an unexplained experience. About 10 years ago I was driving down the mountain, about 2 turns before devil's elbow, my windows instantly fogged up (not the normal fogging) and all the lights started flickering and the engine seized. Scared because having my car stopped on such a dangerous road I kept trying to turn the car back on. I got out to get my safety road flares to set up and noticed that all life stopped. Not a sound cane from the forest which is always active and loud in the summer nights. An eerie feeling flooded me and my neck hairs stood up. I hurried back into the car and a few more tries starting the engine, it finally turned on and at the same time all the windows cleared (every window with and without vents).
I couldn't tell you why nor how this happened. My car was new and never had any incidents before or after that night. So there's my story and my family's story of Wopsy. Now the stranger stories of the Shannon farm up the mountain has even more incredible history of strange events that begin with a black book found on the farm land nearly 109 years ago. Those stories are for another time

Instead of turning right to wopsy go down the road veer off to the first left drive down the dirt road house sits on the right. Partied there back in the 80s but go up Juniata gap rd

Because of their location, no... they are a bit up the hill on the South side of the mountain (Sunny side).
Currently attending Penn State Altoona. I am definitly going to search for the White Lady once it gets a little warmer.
Early Spring when the fog hits :) That is when it will be most interesting too.

Give me suggestions. I had no problem navigating it, but according to the numbers for Blair County, this is probably the most dangerous road in all of Central PA. (I was also driving in light rain and doing just under the speed limit... Personally, I cannot imagine it when it snows... even if PENNDOT does a good job on cleaning it. Similar to 26 over Tussey from Huntingdon into Pine Grove Mills in Centre County).

The version I was taught is that her husband survived and moved on to other lovers. She searches for him with a mangled piece of carriage resembling a hook, appearing in men's vehicles around Devil's Elbow so that she may kill him. In a more modern event, a young man was pursuing this legend and stopped on Devils Elbow to search for the white woman. With no avail, he got back into his car and found standing behind the car in the rear view mirror. She instantly disappeared but as he quickly tried to start his car, he could hear scratching on the outside of his vehicle. When he got back to Altoona, he found no scratches on his car, but stuck underneath the passenger side door handle was a hook.
That is wonderful. I enjoy hearing about the diversity of the story within the community that spawned the story. Gives credence to the "whisper down the lane" experiments.

I grew up right on the buckhorn...my gram and pap lived here all their lives...my gram was born in 1925...your story is more accurate than others atleast you got devils elbow right...the story she told me goes...there was a young couple that jus got married, they were on their way to the hotel that was up there an wrecked their carriage on devils elbow. The woman died and the man lived. Gram says she walks whopsy lookin for her husband....lots of people donno bout devils elbow theyll even argue that it's not called that but it is...the bottom of devils elbow is the pull off that's on 36 goin up the mountain it would be on your right its the big pull off there
That is an awesome story to hear. Sometimes the best stories are the ones our family tells us. I would never contend against such a tail told by your grandmother. She automatically gets a, "that is more true than my story" ;)
@@ODDySEEy you did this video very well. Gram said bout the hotel but I've never seen it or any remains of the structure being there until I seen this video. So I always assumed gram jus maybe got confused bout the hotel being there. This just proves (to me) that her story is more fact than fiction. Everytime gram seen devil's elbow while driving by, she never missed saying "there's devil's elbow" then would tell me all the bad accidents that happened on the corner that she's seen and heard of while living up on top of buckhorn. My mom seen a few bad accident there once so she always slowed down at that corner.
Strange how you pronounce it. No Knock? Growing up there everyone pronounced it Non ock, the last 'o' sounding more like an 'i'

I grew up there & you are on the wrong route. You are on route 36 up over BuckHorne.
You need the windiest middle route up outta Dean/Dysart. It joins at top.
Was following the source stories. This video has gotten as much flak as fandom. It WILL be revisited (for clicks as well as change ups). The cool part was the getting a flat tire and a local coming out of the woodwork to show me their SECRET.

No. There is no historical account of anyone actually dying in regards to the stories of the White Lady of the Wopsy or Buckhorn. There may have been an actual incident, but it fell only on ears and were only retold as stories. I dug all the way back to even BEFORE the days of the Hotel in local papers and found nothing.

wopsy rd looks more dangerous. than the devils elbow.
It is all a matter of at what speed you travel and what the weather is :D Too fast or too slow in wet or snowy conditions make the difference between staying near the road or finding yourself at the bottom of a gorge.

Baker's Mansion in Altoona is supposed to be haunted. There were stories of a dress that's in a glass case that dances.

@@rogergarman Baker's Mansion is also part of the "Woman in White" story that gets confused with the White Lady story. But, even then, the Woman in White is supposed to be about just the wedding gown, not the person who was in it. I have Baker's Mansion on my list for the Historical aspect of the building, not the ghost story. I have done several videos which have the name Baker show up in it... including people burried at the McGuire Massacre Cemetery (which puts the Bakers here about late 1600 early 1700).

I grew up on this road. My mom still lives there and I can tell you that before they put up that awful metal guard rail it was absolutely a beautiful view. The county used to cut back the trees and on a clear day you could see all the way down the valley. It was truly breath-taking. It breaks my heart to see how neglected it's become in the past 15-20 years.

We always called her the Woman in White. I think calling the ghost the White Lady changes the unintended interpretation.
Noted. None of the legends in any of the books or local history mention a "woman in white". With the exception of a ghost story down by Harrisburg.

I grew up on Wopsy and I've only ever heard her called the white lady, never the the lady/woman in white. There was also a tavern at the top of 36 for years called The White Lady, so I'm pretty sure that's the more commonly known name.

I think I can. In an average video I say "it" at least 30 times and nobody has ever noticed an accent. Thank you for being a minority in viewership who feels their voice mattered.
Get over it. I have lived here 50 years and I've heard it pronounced both ways. It's not a big deal, nor is it something you need to be such a negative goof over.
