    I know everyone loves the spontaneous paintings, but I’m a big fan of these storybook drawings. That background glow really - sorry - lit it up!

    Love this. The fiddling is the best part. And pointillism makes great shadows. I could watch you do this all day. It took me twenty years before I put leaves on my "grandpa trees". I still like them more bare. Thank you for this Steve. Oh my gosh, I left the comment before I watched the whole video. Fantastical!

    What an incredible video, thank you so much. I am no artist (…yet), but I can appreciate and enjoy watching an artist taking us through the steps (no pun intended) to rendering such an incredibly eerie drawing. Thank you for taking the time to show us newbs how it’s done. Now, as a fine Scottish lass still living in Scotland, I was grinning like a loon at the fine use of an English West Country accent to tell the tale of that creepy gate. Ummm, if that wasn’t the accent he was going for, sorry? I stand by my thoughts though 👏🏻 He is as you say, a very talented lad and I can just imagine how many times you made each other crack up! Happy Halloween when it comes, but please steer clear of rusty metal and twisted wood, as you just never know… 🎃👻💀👨🏻‍🎨🎨🖌🪶

    Three things on the "dot-dash" approach. First, it's how I sketch/draw non-technical things. I'm totally comfortable with it and just cannot draw long continuous lines to create an image. The "dot-dash" saves me from lines that wander off on their own. Second, I had the hardest time getting students in my high school engineering design class to use drawing tools and almost zero free-hand drawing. We mostly used quadrille ruled paper for the technical drawing work. Third, outside of craft type work on Christmas ornaments and greeting cards, my primary focus has been on learning Chinese brush painting, mostly the xie yi (shia yee) style ("idea writing). That is very free flowing and suggestive, as opposed to gongbi (gong bee) style that is more firmly anchored in careful line drawings in ink, then filled in with ink and watercolor wash. There is an in between style, mogu or boneless style (moe goo) that is more defined than the xie yi form and I find that very appealing to my eye. Frankly, I don't have the control I need for the highly defined gongbi style. I'm just not good enough. I love process you taught in this video. Several images of ruins of castles, abbeys, and monasteries I saw in the UK when lived there (and on TV) flashed in my mind. I think those will be good inspiration for some attempts in my future. I'm a big fan of Victor Ambrus, the late artist for much of the long-running "Time Team" archaeology series in Britain. He could really bring history to life. I wish more of his work had been bound and published before he passed away.

    I'm looking to buy a toned grey sketchbook; you mentioned that you prefer this Stillman to the Strathmore one. How do you feel about the Hahnemuhle Toned Grey Sketchbook, please? I understand that the Stillman sketchbook has more of a cold press finish, and the Hahnemuhle one is more like a hot press finish. I'd like to use it for line and light wash drawing. Which one would you recommend between these two, please?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only Hahnemuhle toned book I've used is their watercolor version. It's ok as a sketchbook and takes watercolor well obviously but it's not as much as a pen and ink book plus it's not as dark gray as I like. I've not tried their other toned sketchbooks. I prefer the Stillman & Birn.

      @@mindofwatercolor I wondered about this. I like my Microns, however, the superfine nibs tend to not interact well with my cold press watercolor paper. Does not matter if it’s cotton or cellulose. I’m not being heavy handed with them, but maybe I should save them for the rare occasion I use hot press, less texture. Cold press just wants to devour the nibs.
