    I like that Deadfoot's foot wasn't healed in StarClan. We are told at some point that cats return to how they were when they were happiest(which is why Yellowfang is still a raggedy old lady, cause she was happiest in ThunderClan) and that gives me the notion that Deadfoot was fine with his twisted foot. It was just a small hiccup in his life, and he was still immensely happy despite it.

    The Hopkit thing is sooo funny to me just because, imo, it feels like it was ONLY done because the writing team realized they couldn't have a character named Deadkit. Like that is the only reason I can think of for why they would go through the process of having him called Hopkit and then renaming him as an apprentice.

      There's a plant that we use to brew ale called hops and with Windclan being near a farm, they might be able to see some (thank Stardew Valley for teaching me that). There's also a type of tree called hop-tree, so he could be named for that (thank Pokemon for that). Plus, if he was named at birth, when newborn kittens are all squirmy and wriggly, he wouldn't be hopping, he'd just be squirming with his siblings.

    • @inkylynx2777
      @inkylynx2777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@alieennetic3653 I've heard of a type of rename system where after a cat suffers a grievous injury, the cat themselves can choose to take on a name reflecting it. Like if Lostface interrupted Firestar mid-speech and said, "Yeah, so I would like an injury rename, but could I go with Halfface or something?" While Cinderpelt would also be treated as respected even though she doesn't change her name to Mangledleg. It's their individual choices, no one else's, and any injury or disability is seen as a celebration. Like, the world tried to kill you and you walked away still breathing, that's awesome!
      Plus, good worldbuilding involves complex social attitudes towards something you may find despicable or rude. Like in India, eating everything on your plate means you want more and leaving some stuff still on it means you're done eating, whereas in America, it's considered rude and wasteful to not eat everything on your plate. In Korea, casually smiling to a stranger indicates you wanna throw down, but in America, that's just being polite
      Closer to the topic, in certain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, women are never referred to by their names, instead going by "the wife of this man", "the daughter of this man", or "the mother of this man", and while some women wish to be referred to by their true names going forward, some women still wish to be called by these epithets. It's their choice, and no one should force or coerce or bully them to change it.

    Personal headcanon, but i like to think Deadfoot is still Crowfeather's dad, he just died before Ashfoot had their kits. Maybe Ashfoot would tell Crowkit about how his father worked hard and was a very dedicated deputy (which, obviously wasn't the author's intent, but headcanons are fun). It'd also make it seem like Deadfoot isn't just choosing cause "oh yeah my son he's cool look at my boy" (it still has a bit of that but yknow), it's also cause it's the only kit of his that survived (Eaglekit, Hillkit and Downkit are all in starclan). I'm not sure if the timeline matches, but headcanons are headcanons
    Ashfoot or Dawncloud could be talked about next? There's not much to talk about, so a mini-talking might fit best

      The only issue is that a cat’s gestation is 2-3 months and the time passage was around 5.
      I like to think Deadfoot told Ashfoot to tell Crowkit he was the father. It’d imply him and Ashfoot had something romantic or even platonic which is cute. Heck, it might just be a love for his clan.

    • @Moonkitti
      @Moonkitti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +189

      Two issues, the first being that Crowfeather *remembers him* as deputy. The second being that even if we assume that Crowfeather didn't ever know his father, Crowfeather would have to, at the very least, be a 4-5 moon old kit at the beginning of Firestar's Quest for this to work. And then he would have been made an apprentice by the end of the book, and he would have been an apprentice for nearly an entire year by the time Midnight comes around, which is about 6 months more training than an apprentice as been said to require.

    I remember reading the part in Crowfeather’s trial about Deadfoot being Crowfeather’s dad and just doing a big, disappointed sigh. I can excuse all the bad math that makes this situation impossible, I’m just so so so tired to Warriors nepotism. -_- Granted not that a whole lot was ever followed through on Crowfeather’s story and Deadfoot’s speech about him in Midnight, but you’re absolutely right that it changes the meaning behind that scene completely if Deadfoot is Crowfeather’s dad. Im so sorry but I’m going through Firestar’s Quest now and I have some math to back you up:
    Ashfoot was specifically mentioned to have just given birth to kits in Firestar’s Quest and since Crowpaw was mentioned to be almost a warrior in Midnight and Squirrelpaw was 8 moons in Midnight, he’d have to be 4-5 moons older than her. Brightheart was very pregnant with Whitekit when Firestar and Sandstorm left for their quest and when they gave birth to Squirrelkit and Leafkit at the end Whitekit is nearly old enough to be an apprentice, meaning she is about 5 moons old. Whitekit is probably only a week or two younger than Crowkit so we can confirm that that ages in Midnight match up there; Crowpaw was five moons older than Squirrelpaw so that litter Ashfoot gave birth to in Firestar’s Quest had to have had Crowkit in it. There’s no way around it Crowfeather was born in Firestar’s Quest. And if Firestar’s Quest takes place five months after the Darkest Hour, and Deadfoot died in the Darkest Hour, and cat pregnancy is like 2 months… yeah no absolutely not can Deadfoot be Crowfeather’s dad.

      Ashfoot tells Crowkit stories about Deadfoot, and the stories are made into memories in Crowkit's mind, because if you think about it, some stuff may look like a memory but they're just a story.

    I just headcanon that when a cat dies, they go to Starclan with a physique of when they are the happiest in their life. Which would explain why Deadfoot still limps because no matter which age he choose, he always had that crooked paw. This is also why elders are seemed to be young because I assume they are indeed happier as a warrior and not having every bone aching in their body.
    Although at the same time I assume cats who grew into adults have a more blurry memory of their kithood, which means they still remember being a kid but it prevents them to associate that time period as the happiest they ever been (because they don't recall much aside from a sense of joy and warmth).
    This way it will prevents a grown cat who dies and shows up as a kit in Starclan.
    (But it could be amusing, just imagine if Bluestar became a kitten in Starclan because the happiest of her life was before Moonflower died. So now when Starclan cats have a meeting, you'll see this small kitten coming out of the tall grass and sits beside massive Lionheart. Then Spottedleaf goes “Ah Bluestar, you are late.” to this kit no older than 5 moons and she replied “Sorry, I came as soon as I heard but my tiny legs couldn't carry me any faster.”)
    But I guess this headcanon can also be angsty. For example when Brightheart dies and went to Starclan with no scarred face, it means that despite every joy she had later on (loving Cloudtail, being a mother and grandmother, the years of service for her clan, etc.) couldn't mend her and she still thinks her apprentice-hood was the best of her life.

    I think the only reason they had his kit name as hopkit before changing it to deadpaw was purely because the erins realized "oh shit it'd be pretty weird if he was named deadkit from birth"
    As for him not being healed in starclan, i'd imagine it's because he just never thought he needed healing. His leg wasn't something he saw as a burden, he was born with it and was able to adapt well to it.
    It's like, how everyone is normally at their young, more active self in starclan but yellowfang is still old and i think i recall the explanation being that in her old age was when she had been at her happiest, living in thunderclan, so that's how she stayed?

    The only way I can see Deadfoot being Crowfeathers dad and Crowfeather having known him would be if the wound we see him dying from actually kills him slowly. Like, he just manages to pull through, but the wound is severe and lingering, with repeated infections and difficulty healing. Deadfoot does his best to continue as deputy, (in the same way he continued training while wounded as an apprentice) maybe with assistance from Mudclaw whenever the wound is really acting up. He’s not a particularly present father, mostly because he is dying, and spends a lot of time in the medicine den whenever he’s not forcing himself to work.
    That’s all just an idea though, of course; I think it’d be neat but there’s definitely no evidence for it lol

    If there were 5-6 moons between Darkest Hour and Firestar's Quest (I recall it being 6 not 5 but nvm that) then Deadfoot could have had Crowfeather with Ashfoot during that time, meaning he would be only slightly older than Whitewing. Also, he was supposed to become a warrior during Midnight if he hadn't left for sun-drown-place (he mentions that he's going to have final assessment soon), so he should be older than Spiderleg and Shrewpaw even. That being said the ages of everybody born between Darkest Hour and Midnight are a bit... complicated, so complicating years later Crowfeather' origin by mentioning Deadfoot was his father actually weirdly fits to all of this xD

    • @Moonkitti
      @Moonkitti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      He has to be alive at the same time as Deadfoot to remember him being deputy, so for this to work in any capacity he would need to have been born earlier in the first arc. This also suggests he was an apprentice for over a year, which is very abnormal.

  • @inkylynx2777
    @inkylynx2777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I've seen this idea floating around of having the injury names be up to the named cat in question to bear. If Cinderpelt wants to be named after her mangled leg, she can just ask Bluestar or Firestar and they'll rename her Mangledleg. If she doesn't want to, she remains Cinderpelt. Lostface could interrupt Firestar mid-speech and go, "Hey, I wouldn't mind having an injury rename, but could I have something like Halfface instead?" and own her injury by owning her name. While outsiders might think naming a cat after their injury is cruel, the clan cats would see it as brandishing a medal of "I lived, bitch" and is something to be respected.

  • @catxborsuq1
    @catxborsuq1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wait, new theory: Firestar's Quest is wrong and Ravenpaw's manga is right; Deadfoot was still alive then, and only died between the manga and Midnight. Mudclaw being mentioned to be the deputy in Firestar's Quest could be caused by that book being written after The New Prophecy and they got it mixed up (just how they mixed up the count of Firestar's lives).
    ... I mean it's a mess either way but still xD

    Yeah, while I love Tallstar's Revenge, some of its biggest flaws for me come from the fact that it's a prequel and therefore *has* to conclude in a specific way. Characters have to be where they were by the time of Into the Wild (or I guess Fire and Ice in WindClan's case) regardless of how they felt previously throughout that book. Hopkit-->Deadpaw/foot is an unfortunate side effect of that. He *has* to become Deadfoot somehow, right? Regardless of how cruel that renaming convention is. Renaming a cat after their disabilities/wounds/etc. has always struck me as very mean spirited of the authors to include as part of the cats' society. Deadpaw's cheer about the whole thing/the fact that he seemed to have had some say about it is definitely an outlier. ...And it still kind of feels forced, like some other aspects of the book. At the bare minimum, at least he wasn't forced to become a medicine cat because of his disability... but that's probably only because he had to become deputy one day.

    While Crowfeather ever knowing his dad could not work in literally ANY sense without retcons I imagine that Ashfoot would have basically had to have found she's pregnant with Crowkit RIGHT BEFORE Deadfoot dies, and then Crowkit would be like 3 months old by Firestars quest (if we're considering the fact that cats stay pregnant for about 2 months) -- 2 or 3 months during firestar's quest that'd make him apprenticed age before Squirrelkit and Leafkit are born, and being about 13-14 months old by the time Squirrelpaw is 8 months in midnight (which checks out since he was about to take his warrior assessment by the time he leaves for the journey) . It's still a bit long for apprentices typically taking 12 months but an extra 1 or 2 months is at least more plausible than him having been an apprentice for a whole YEAR
    Though him ever KNOWING deadfoot is impossible (esspecially when he was old enough to ever be INTERESTED in she-cats like he implies), and even then it makes it weird how Ashfoot never left the nursery in between litters (though that could just be left to them not caring about Ashfoot )

    My sibling’s justification of Deadfoot being Crowfeather’s father despite never having read any of these books and only saw this video and heard my summary of Tallstar’s revenge: since Deadfoot wasn’t explicitly stated as dead in the Darkest Hour but instead mortally injured, that he spent a long, long time in the medicine den after the Darkest Hour, during that time Mudclaw becomes deputy, AND somehow during the very very end of that stay in the medicine den, right before he died, he got Ashfoot pregnant.
    I typed this very eloquently? What my sibling actually said was “obviously while he was dying in the hospital he was f*ckin and s*ckin” 😂

  • @Rustclaw
    @Rustclaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So I just did the math, and deadfoot would only have needed to live 3 more moons after the Darkest Hour:
    18 months in between books
    -2 for pregnancy
    -7 for kit
    -5 for Crowpaw being said to be almost a warrior in Midnight
    Which would leave three moons open before Crowfeather was born
    So, in theory, there is a very slim possibility it you don’t count allegiances

    Fan Theory!
    Deadfoot was harshly injured in that battle. He didn't die, but he was in the medicine cats den for a long time. Maybe it was only a moon after this that Ashfoot came out as being pregnant. I would assume Mudclaw took up the role as deputy, much like Brambleclaw did when Graystripe was missing.
    It was meant to be temporary. Deadfoot would remain in the medicine cats den for moons, his son being born, growing up, and knowing him.... but knowing he was "busy." This probably a cover for saying his father was very ill. I assume Deadfoot died just after Crowfeather became Crowpaw, and so Mudclaw would take the full title as Deputy.
    This would explain why Crowfeather says his father was deputy, and confirm that it WAS Deadfoot.
    Sad theory.... but, realistic to an extent. o3o

Its such a widly spread belive in real life that people with a disability would be better of without it, happier or even, if I may quote some realy disgusting school book „fixed“ and „whole again“ yuck. Often in fiction the characters arnt even given a choice on the matter, it just gets assumed theyd be happier and boom, theyre not disabled anymore.
    I like to think that thats what starclan was going to do, but Deadfoot was like: „What? No, my paw is like a part of me and Im doing great with the way it is, I dont need you to change it. It good the way it is.“ and they just let him (cuz its entierly his desision!!!)

They got him home to camp and he managed to hold onto life for a bit, he couldn’t preform his deputy duty’s but was still considered the deputy. crowfeathers was then born some point during this time and shortly after deadfoot died. It would still ruin him picking Crowpaw for the journey but I think it would be the only was to make deadfoot crowfeathers dad. Ok here's my headcanon (And I know quite a few agree)
    What if Crowfeather's dad is Mudclaw? Ashfoot had just given birth in Firestar's Quest, too much time after The Darkest Hour for it to have been Deadfoot. And Ashfoot realized how Mudclaw was after she had his kits, so she just said Deadfoot was Crowkit's father. If his father was Deadfoot, the whole Ravenpaw manga scene where Crowkit is like "No my Clan doesn't care about me" wouldn't make sense, because Deadfoot was a very kind cat. But Mudclaw? He was not very nice. He was very aggressive, and wouldn't really care about his kits. It is very possible that Deadfoot is the father of Eaglekit and the others, but it's impossible for him to be Crowfeather's father, so Ashfoot lied to him so he wouldn't feel neglected by his father.
    Or who knows, it could very well be Jake or Firestar

    I don't know man, at this point nothing in these books makes sense, so I really don't doubt that Crowfeather really was an apprentice for two years and Deadfoot is his father, Not because it makes sense, but because it DOESN'T make sense, and nothing makes sense, and I think we should continue like this, it's funny.

    just quickly saying deadfoot is possible to be crowfeathers dad because crowfeather's a kit in fire and ice, even though it never states his name its said that the kit is ashfoots and crowfeather has three siblings who all die and kits and are his littermates however in fire and ice we only see one kit who as i said before is mentioned to be ashfoots, so yeah crowfeather was already born before deadfoot died

    My headcnnon is that since Starclan cats are all as they were happiest in life I like to think he still has his twisted paw because he wasn't uncomfortable with his image with the disability due to him being as peppy as he seemed.

    I justify it by saying Deadfoot choosing Crowfeather makes Crowfeather a nepo baby, which is the funniest possible option to me

    So, this is my personal theory. As a physically disabled person who suffers with chronic pain on a daily basis, I would want to keep my injury if I were a character in the book and went to StarClan. Disabilities might be seen as weaknesses to the rest of the world, but for the people who have them, it is their greatest strength. People with disabilities have to overcome more than others. In some ways it can become a sense of pride and a constant reminder that we can make it through anything. Of course, this is only my theory. I’m sure Deadfoot having his twisted paw in StarClan was either a mistake, or a misunderstanding of how StarClan works. You could also make the argument that Deadfoot was born with his disability and never knew what it was like to live without it. So, for him, it was normal.

      I am physically, disabled myself, and really really appreciate this comment! I am partially blind, and was born with this disability. It is true what you say. Disabilities can truly make a person stronger if they embrace them, not choosing to use them as their only source of identity, but using them to Show what aspects of life can be overcome with determination, and in my case, a lot of faith. I believe that the disabled are a minority group that is very very frequently under appreciated. All minority groups deserve recognition and attention, but I believe that the disabled many times fade into the background when people consider Minorities.

    On the topic of Starclan injuries, this is my theory: Injuries and Disabilities are healed IF the cat chooses. So cats like Jayfeather, who considers his blindness as nothing but a burden, might take sight. But cats like Brightheart or Cinderpelt(if she hadn't been reincarnated) mightve kept their injuries because they accepted it and it became part of who they are. The same goes for Briarlight. She saw her injury as a burden. Rather than a part of her.
