Emotional Steve Aoki: Life is short, love what you do

  • DJ and musician Steve Aoki candidly reflects on the sacrifices necessary to stay at the top of his industry. Aoki - who has performed at least 250 shows per year for 15 years - says his current schedule doesn’t allow for a family or children, but he wants to have kids eventually. He refers to his experiences working a large crowd as “the ultimate high” and gets introspective recalling emotions he felt earlier this year when performing back in his hometown of Newport Beach, California. Aoki remembers his best friend, who passed away in 2020 and encourages viewers to embrace every moment spent with those who matter.
Aoki goes into more detail within his 2019 memoir “Blue: The Color of Noise,” which is available on Amazon - tinyurl.com/yktbww9v.

This reminds me kinda of Schoolboy Q loosing Mac Miller and many other artists. Looks like a hell of a life for us people who aren't famous in general, but we should think about how much people do sacrifice for this kind of life...missing their families, etc. Success, for me, is character. Success is being the best person you can to yourself, others around you and the environment in general. People who think success is measured by a number still need to work on their characters.

you could be right but there's nothing wrong with chasing highs in life, especially if they're natural. the feeling after exercise or a jog or the feeling after a great accomplishment or being in the moment or high surfers or skateboarders deep in their passion, (as for a sober entertainer as this case) is an incredible joy. not same as chasing drugs, which is more for escaping reality. performing live is an embrace of reality, but i would tell steve to have children soon, even if he cannot always be there we must remember our goal of bringing new life into this planet.

This touches me on so many different levels. I'm a DJ and a graphic designer, and recently I've been animating for Dim Mak, Steve Aoki's label, and man, does their mantra get stuck in my head. "By Any Means Necessary". He really meant that. You can see it in those tears, you can feel it at his shows, the way he talks about it here. He's sort of what I want to be as an artist.
Right now, I use my designs and animations to get closer to the DJ's like him, and others, to share with them the art I make, with hopes that one day I can share those same stages as well.
I played a few shows, and even though there wasn't a lot of people, my realest friends were there, and I was making people dance, and laugh, and sing, and for those brief moments I felt the feeling Steve's talking about right here. That high, that bliss, it's like nothing else. And like he said, no other drug.
I know the feeling of them, but since I've been DJing more, and learning production, and doing all the art I do, I noticed I didn't need them anymore.
I found my passions. Music & art.
The 2 things I'm going to chase By Any Means Necessary for the rest of my life.
Because I love it, and I want to make the world feel that love too.
    Bliss.

I think what is important here is that he is a human being and he's cognizant of how lucky he is. Yes most of us would rather be in his position and he acknowledges that. However, he still feels pain and hurt.
