Fantastic interview from a hard working, humble creative personality. I’m surprised DJ AM and Banana Split we’re not mentioned as the first DJ to push getting lofty money from Vegas clubs. Also Banana Split being the party that grew Steve as a DJ.
This culture he is aiming for that he speaks of regarding technology for the future and how it will impact us as a race, has already been developed...we are just becoming more aware of it!
yeah theres already technology out there that give humans infinite life years and you can never die. This nanotechnology is used by elites. When their body expires, they can just transfer their thoughts, memories and soul to a different human much like a computer hard drive can be swapped out and replaced into a newer, more powerful pc.
I was becoming an admirer of this young man until the end when he made such a revealing statement regarding immortality. He really believes that we as a modern society have the potential to supersede The natural cycle of life and death. This generation believes modern civilization is the pinnacle of an intelligent universe, greater than any God or higher self could ever be. Imagine there is no heaven......... just mr. Aoki and his magnificent and transcending generation.
i had the pleasure to take him to the airport last night. didnt really talk to they were rushing but he was chill. if he call us again ill ask for a pic. he is more than a DJ
In L.A. What early underground places did he play? I was very into underground & am dying to know. Anybody know? I guess the "years" are important, too. I left in '95. He mentions Newport Beach - he must have lived there. But what undergrounds?
The contract probably stipulates sales numbers be met. If your popularity falls off within that 2 year contract and you are only pulling $300k a show in ticket sales and alcohol/booth/private table sales than they arent paying you $500k. I bet his nightly pay is directly proportional to sales. And the max is $500K no matter how high sales get
lets take a moment to realize how great this interviewer is
He's really well spoken
Steve has the brains and business acumen of his Dad. Rocky Aoki would be proud.
High quality interview - thank you WSJ for this. Aoki is an insightful guy.
When ppl think of Steve Aoki they think of a guy that throws cake and stage dives
after seeing this I still think that.. his rhetoric is as empty as his "dj" performance
I think all the vodkas and cakes he threw sure take a toll on his mentality
That reporters Gucci shoe’s!!
I need to be a reporter
This guy is so genuine and iconic
This is a guy you want to have a beer with
except he is sober and doesn't drink
i waved hi to this guy twice walking by me and didnt say anything stuck up sob
Never liked his music, but now I respect him 100x more! Great human and someone to admire!
Thanks Steve!

Great interview! Very informative! Aoki is on point with his views! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Massive respect as always for Aoki. What a savvy man.

Seeing him live was AMAZING!
Yup he's a smart cookie DJ entrepreneur.
Good to see Justin Whang finally get some rec from the mainstream media.
I love Steve Aoki's HAIR! His philosophy is great too. xo
I remember seeing him live in 2011 w/ Kid Cudi on a small stage. He's making bank now with what he loves to do.
I don't know how to express how much I liked that
this guys is practically genius not just being a dj.
Amazing interview! Great questions! ❤️
Knowing the business side destroys the “ starving artist 👩🎨 theory “
Incredible to think of what the true house pioneers value would have been worth today in these venues.
steve aoki is a king prove me wrong
LETS GOOOOO STEVE AOKI
Where can I get that shirt!? (looks like stylized Croatia jersey)
Asian Jesus! I want some Pizzaoki, come deliver to Cleveland! :) Have a great day y'all 🌞
I clicked on this video because i thought he is wearing the nation football dress from croatia 🇭🇷

I wish that the artists on spotify would also gets paid of that they deserve... currently it's basically almost just "exposure" and breaking even

I want to see a special called "Steve Aoki makes over WSJ journalist."
Amazing talk
There's literally a major pizza franchise in Japan called Aoki's Pizza already lol
Not in US though
Richie Hawtin and Black Coffee are DJ's...
Carl Cox, Annie Mac
Who????????
He sounds like Jesse Pinkman
Not a fan but interesting business aspect.
Your last name is Ah-o-key!

1996-mid 00's
@@izang5800 ok - I left then.
you can tell hes working on trying to live forever.
777!

To pay any artist half of brick for a nights work is outrageous..... How about the punter's bottle service prices having jumped from 1-2K to 10-15K+!!
no it's not. Like Steve said, it's economics. If he's getting half a ticket, the club/casino is easily clearing out twice that at least.
