Glad I grew up with no cell phone or PC too! Also glad I lived out in the country and could enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming in the pond, riding bikes until dark-thirty, and reading books at bedtime. Such a happy period in my life. And the minute I retired, I moved right back to the lifestyle from whence I came. Couldn't be happier. It's all about family and the joy of being alive. My PC makes quick work of paying bills and catching up on the news, otherwise, it sits alone for all but an hour or so a day. My phone isn't touched unless it rings. Life is good!
Now you're just ruining your life by spending your time on TH-cam and on TOP of that commenting on a video so that complete strangers like me can read it and criticize you. *YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM*
My dad told me “Think about how many hours you need to work for the thing, and than you decide if it is worth it.” Enjoy things, but don’t be a slave of things.
That’s good but it’s really the same as budgeting. His point is not about the cost. It’s that regardless of cheap or expensive, junk is junk and in fact most of it will never make you feel better or enjoy life to the fullest.
True success to me is having the freedom to do what I want/ when I want. No debt tying me down and little material things to be accountable for. Inner peace is key
Games have started doing that too. Before games were all about merely enjoying them. Finishing them or not were all up to you and how much you wanted out of it. Now battlepasses and the like have been introduced, with the concept of "If you don't play for this much within this timeframe, you will lose out on some cool looking stuff". For some reason though, those kinds of systems just makes me not want to play. Even Animal crossing, where it's all about enjoying it a little bit every day and enjoy the smaller things, I just can't handle having to go in every day to check up on my town. I love getting deep into one game at a time. And at the same time I need variety, which means I tend to jump between 2-3 games at a time. But the moment I feel that the games control me instead of the other way around, I lose interest quickly. Extrinsic motivation ruins so much for me that I end up just not playing the game altogether.
My older brother is a very rich successful man. Yet he lives in a regular condo, wears cheap clothes, eats street food. When I asked him why he aint balling, he said he isnt trying to impress anyone. He never let money define who he is. He changed the way I looked at life.
Thats not inspirational. He earns money yet doesn’t even take care of himself. Street food and cheap clothes? He clearly has no respect for his own health and appearance. Love life full to impress yourself. At least do that.

@VBoo459 this view is too materialistic and shallow. Eating street food doesn't mean that's all he eats. Nor does wearing cheap clothes. That guy would be ideal definition of successful because he has money and obviously does not give a fuck lol
Johann Hari is a wise man, constantly seeking a deeper truth in our shallow society. Lost Connections is one of my favorite books. It explains why life is so unfulfilling now.
Absolutely. I'm 28 now and in the last couple of years me and my friends have all stopped doing the things we enjoy to chase that mortgage that we as humans are expected to achieve. I don't go out anymore. I just work like a dog so that i can put a deposit down for a shitty apartment.
I think it just comes down to no one wants to be lonely and it’s lead by women imo. Women often decide how society acts because men are the ones trying to be chosen by women. If women wanted a dude in a tan Honda Civic everyone would want one lol
I picked my kids up from school one day and I’ll never forget. My son and daughter began asking me questions about me not having tech devices when I was young and they felt sorry for me because I must’ve been so bored 😂 I’m like no kids I feel bad for y’all. I explained to them fun stuff we did as kids like explore through the woods, play at parks a lot and rode around half the town on bicycles all day.
These kids today don’t realize, you can’t miss something if you never had it. I held off getting a cell phone for as long as I could. I’d go back to no cell phones or computers if given the choice.
I think if the world was safer and had more friendly activities for younger children and even teens it be different and they could have such experiences but the way the world is at least from my perception it seems more geared towards adults and less child family friendly than it used to be it seems even thinks for children and young people now care more about marketing and numbers than values much less safety and preserving the innocence of youth that so often is stolen technology isn't perfect and certainly isn't the solution but better to leave them monitored in a space you know they are near and save than outside in the woods or at a candy store unattended where the trained professionals of the world in trafficking and child predators are constantly on the hunt for some poor young soul to take and destroy for their own perverse purposes.
I actually feel blessed that I grew up (in the 80s-90s) with so few material possessions. We couldn't afford it being on mostly one NZ income and 5 kids to feed. But thankfully mum knew how to sew clothes, plant a variety of foods in the garden while teaching us to be fairly self sufficient. So we figured out early on how to create our own fun without needing many toys or material items. Now days we've taken those values into our own homes and even though we can afford more if we want to, it's just not a priority. We prefer the value of presence over presents. If I ever spend money on my kids, I'll use it towards a fun experience shared with family and friends. Instead of the latest toy/item that will only offer us a temporary high before being forgotten about in a few weeks/months time. Unlike great memories which usually last a lifetime.🥰💜

I'm 16 years old. And probably a lot of people know that this is the golden age of materialism, everybody wants to show off their knew sneakers etc. I've been thinking about this a lot and have been trying my best to keep away from it, being different. It's hard let me tell you, it's not easy. But if you want to succeed, you have to sacrifice. When I watched the video, I already knew about it. Meaning I'm already on the right way and you should be too. Be different.
Impressive how thoughtful you are already at that age. One thing I would suggest is: don't try to be different, just be rational. And the rational thing to do is analyze everything without a bias. Not everything that is "normal" is bad, just identify which things are bad, like you did with too much materialism. If you can be just different in those aspects, but "normal" in the good aspects, you will also still fit very well into the society and be a social person, which has many benefits and gives you many opportunities to meet good people.
@@reen4371 I agree You shouldn't throw away everything that is normal simply because it's normal just take out the things in your life that are proven to be bad But being weird is really fun 😁

When I was in middle school, I got bullied if I didn't wear fashion brand clothes. But as I got older, I realized that a lot of the kids that were bullying other kids that were from poorer families that couldn't afford the latest fashion, were actually from poor families themselves. Sometimes the world is fake, sad and self-destructive.
My wife was from the poorer neighbourhood. She told me how her friends raced to buy brands. Even now they have extravagant birthday parties but still cannot afford to buy good house/car.
Same here. I didn't grow up poor but dressed poor and the kids who wear designer clothes often spent their whole check on nice clothing even though they are from poor families
Funny how our entire education system is primarily built upon extrinsic motivation. Classes that you do for intrinsic reasons are few and far between. That usually dictates a life with a job that you do for extrinsic reasons

Growing up in a mid-class family way back in the early '90s is such a treasure, no gadgets, no fancy shoes, no expensive toys just pure fun. We play the whole day every weekend, we play also this called "patentero" with no slippers so that we can run faster, playing hide and seek at night and we swap clothes to lure the one who's looking at us, and lastly, I fight bullies. Sadly, new generations cant experience it right now because of these techs and new stuff. What they saw on the net or on Tv or even with their friends they want to have it too just to be accepted. I am so happy that a few years ago, I simply purged all my consumerism/materialism "needs". It was not a revelation or a decision, I simply stopped caring about all those things. Simplicity and minimalism give me calmness...I do not want to have 15 pairs of sneakers, I do not need 60 shirts/tops. It actually stresses me out to have so many things, meaning that if I have to move to a new place I need to have a mountain of boxes to worry about. I now only replace things that break/have holes in them (but still try to have them repaired first). I have repaired my jeans, I have repaired my work shoes, I have repaired a pair of boots that I like. Why throw them away? It costs less to repair and you don't need to go around looking for new stuff. Doing martial arts helped on this as you focus on the mental part of what fulfills you. A hobby that is fun. I appreciate the simple things in life...having a good sparring night, going to the movies to see a film I was so looking forward to, being around friends playing board games or card games, reading a nice book...it's just amazing to not have to use something with a screen. I agree with the guy in the video, I can never understand why on earth people go to live concerts not appreciating what they are watching live and instead they use a phone to "share" the amazing experience. I may take one picture just to remember the night and that's it. I do binge on TH-cam but that's because I don't watch TV. I watch interesting videos that add to my encyclopedic knowledge instead.
The satisfaction you get from repairing something that you have had for a while, makes it awesome. It shows you appreciate that things that were made and do not waste necessarily either. Still got my jeans from 5 years ago, redyed the colour to keep it strong. 😀
I actually learned this from Buddhism teaching called "The trap of desire" its a never ending self suffering circle. Our society just make it worse, the true happiness come within our mind.
True. Good observation. Happiness comes from within. If you need more external new and cooler things to make you happy just to fit in. You have to wait for a long time. Desire knows no ends. Desire is like licking a knife and the more you lick it the more it cut your tongue. Thank you for your wisdom.

The accessibility of love, laughter, family and friendship is proportional to how much money you have. You aren't going to be very loveable, laughing much, or spending much time doing anything with family and friends if you're struggling.
The thing to me is, if you invest and have other income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends without selling. Which means you can pass that on to your kids which will give them a leg up in life. $52k dividends received in 2022.
I agree! That's why it is advisable that you have to invest while you still have a regular job or earning a regular income, and do it constantly. You still need to have something that will keep you going even if you're investing. Good financial planning and money allocation is the key.

You know I remember a time before s Facebook. When I was a teenager. I did feel happier then. Part of it is the lack of responsibility I had back then. Part of it is also the fact I spent a lot of time with my friends in the woods playing paintball. Now that I’m older I’ve realized the only thing that matters in life is friends and family. This is a great clip I’m going to share it with my wife. I will rewatch this a few times so the message sinks in. I guess fishing all the time is good for me!
It's probably the mystery that's now missing. Meeting a friend you haven't seen for some time would make you feel ecstatic. The question what's up made a lot of sense. Now that almost everyone is posting every detail down to whatever they ate for breakfast just blew the mystery away. There's no more reason to be curious and wonder what everyone is up to.
This is so true. Thank you for uploading this video. People should learn to actually ask them what they want with their life and if they are happy with their life. In the end it's your life, your memories. You are not a movie for someone else to watch. You are a movie that you remember. ❤☺
So I'm only a movie! But if it's for me then it's ok. You're not a narrative. Stop looking at your life like a distant observer judging its value based solely on the standards others have implanted into your consciousness. You are a human being that needs a meaningful existence not symbols of success and material possessions. This ideas that if you're doing it for yourself it will be better than if you're doing it for others is a trick of the mind. Don't fall into that trap. You're still chasing self worth whether it's for others or yourself. Doing things so you can prove to yourself your own value and worth as a human being is disastrous and will only lead to disappointment. You won't find yourself by becoming a big success, having an expensive car and getting post graduate degree. Not that there is anything wrong with being successful but ask yourself this, who am I at my core. If you were to strip everything away would you be any less yourself or valuable without the big career, money and status. Everything we judge ourselves and others bye is based on the value, usefulness and estimation society has for us. What if societies values were junk values. What would you do after you've spent decades of your life pursuing these things only to find yourself lonely, alienated and atomized. When they no longer need you you will be thrown away and forgotten. This is the harsh reality we live in. When you are poor and unsuccessful people look at you with contempt and when you are accomplished people look at you with envy. No narrative will fix this problem. Changing the makeup and costumes on a pig won't change the fact that a pig is still a pig. Our society is controlled by sociopaths and monsters and we have become sick from this mad world we live in.
I am grateful that I grew up in the '80s and '90s as a kid and teenager where smartphones and internet didn't exist yet. This guest on the show is bang on. More than materialism itself, I think the real underlying causes for failure are wanting to keep up with the Jones-es and a checkbox approach. That is, seeing your existence as a list of checkboxes to tick (studies, marriage, degree, children) rather than thinking everything through to determine whether it is the right thing to do.
Elizabeth Hayward good for you. I think because people's biggest fear is not being liked (the tribal instinct of being accepted meant safety) they will copy what everyone around them is doing and not really question if it's something that they really really want in their life. They copy out of fear. But if people reject you for not doing what they are doing, they are not the type of company you need and you need to find those like yourself. But like yourself I have no interest in what others think of me either and if you are ok with not being liked then that's ok. Trouble is many people can't stand not being liked so will just comply or do whatever it takes to be part of the pack.
Not exactly. Everyone needs some guideline, a compass of what to do in life. It was religion, then "building a prosperous capitalistic world" but now these systems of values came out of fashion and there is nothing adequate enough to replace them. Its intriguing how we are getting back to our fundamental religious intuitions about life through a pure secular mindset. The bloke is speaking about going beyond materialistic wants and extrinsic motivations and getting in touch with our internal vision to guide our actions. He is also talking about coming together as a community once a week to make conversations about what are the deepest values that we care about as a society and to hold ourselves accountable in pursuit of these values. Well, that's the role and function of religion in any society.
@@melroycorrea7720 this stuff existed way before religion was invented when we lived in much smaller groups. problem is there is so many of us now that we can be alone in a sea of people

If you don't want to do something it doesn't matter if this world is against you don't do it. Some friends are worth living without. They should appreciate your decisions and your freewill.
Get rid of those people! True friends will appreciate and respect what's best for you, not turn against you because you are doing something different against the pack. By being different it intimidates them hence why they do it. It makes them question their own actions and that scares them.
With all due respect, it sounds more like it's the people that's shitty, moreso than the process of freeing yourself from materials. It takes a long time to realize how truly miserable you are, and even longer to see that it doesn’t have to be that way. Only after you give up everything, can you begin to find a way to be happy.
There is also the fact that we as children are “programmed” by our parents way of loving. If we sense, early in life, that love needs to be bought by material and external stuff, that’s how we are going to behave as adults. It’s important to realize this and break the bonds we have with mum and (or) dad, in order to behave according to our real needs. Never is too late to have a healthy childhood 😃

I love this. It's given me new ways to explain what I've been trying to instill in my daughter since birth. Thank you very much. I've been able to make her realize that what she wants in the store will only make her happy for a few minutes and then it just becomes "clutter" in her life, but I was missing the part about how to replace that desire with something valuable. You use "flowstate" as an example replacement. I don't get into flowstate often but when I do, I'm aware of it and grateful for it.
Materialism often leads to "showy display of one's means of life". I read that from somewhere and that smacks truth. After reading some comments I think it needs to be clarified. Materialism is not specific to certain items. Just because you're not tied to your phone or don't have an expensive one doesn't make you not materialistic. Materialism in principle has to do with your pursuit in life. It applies to any material item such as clothes, cars, etc. Materialism is a mindset and it's a trap you can get into quick. Trying to get the necessities like a house or car can lead to materialism. The desire to own a luxury house or luxury car instead of a modest car. That's also materialism if that's your pursuit. On the other hand, you can still be wealthy and not be materialistic if you're not making the obtaining of things your main concern in life.
I 100% agree with all of this but sometimes taking videos/photos while you’re on a trip or of anything special feels so great to look at after the event or the trip with 3-5 years, It’s about capturing the moment, enjoying It at the same time & to be able to look back & say “well, That was so fun & I was so caught up in the moment that I didn’t even appreciate It till now”
Yeah taking a few as memories is cool, the way people used to before social media. You just need to check yourself that you don’t have that “ppl are gonna think I’m so cool for this” feeling inside when you are doing it
I record videos on my phone for me & my kids. I rarely share anything other than with my sister or mom. I love love the memories we are recording together. But I also try to enjoy the moment

@@shanedingz Technology has made the world better. Because of smartphones I can now communicate with people billions of miles away. I make a living through my smartphone. I learned game development and programming using my smartphone and laptop. The advantages are endless. There are also disadvantages but this applies to any innovation. Guns and nuclear energy in the wrong hands can bring about great destruction and horror. But in the right hands they bring order and energy. You can't through away technology just because it has negative side effects. By that logic we should abandon cars, agriculture, textile industry, petroleum industry, virtually anything that is not natural. By your reasoning we should go back to the stone age.
And no offence to your profession, but video games are a false reality. A toy. The world doesn’t need them. Great that you found a way to make money at it. And you went a bit far. There is a lot of technology that has made the world ‘better’. Easier to be alive certainly. But as with everything, it can be taken too far. Just because you can, does that mean you should?.. It's the exposure of these materialistic "things" that draw to our attention. Advertisements, T.V ads, magazines, phones, internet...the list goes on! Hard to avoid in this day and age.

I think you can enjoy materialistic stuff as long as your working and being sensible about it The problem is, so many people are not being sensible about it and accruing debt before they've even purchased a house for example
Of course you can enjoy materialistic stuff. I love my cars/motorbikes. But I/ME loves them. I couldn't give a shit what other people think, quite frankly I wish they didn't notice me at all so I'd be able to do more stuff I like to do.
Yes it is true that a lot of people ruin there lives over obsession with what others perceive of them, but I also think that people with a certain level of intelligence knows not to do that. I guess there is a lot of simple minded people in our world who aren't able to see through there own toxic behaviours.
I have never been materialistic in my whole life, not even as a kid. Yet I still have a bit of the problem that is brought up in this video. Like at times spending too much of my time scrolling on internet and such. I am a gamer so sitting at my computer comes natural to me as it's part of my hobby. And I also do digital art so that's also at the computer... So unfortunately I cannot completely unplug my life from technology as both my hobbies are done with technology... So I sometimes struggle to find a healthy balance of maybe spending too much time on internet when I could have spent time doing art or something. Yeah... When I was a kid I did traditional art only and I remember I did art every day and sometimes spent my whole weekend doing comics and stuff. Damn was I productive back then. As an adult I don't know what happened to change that. At 16 depression and several undiagnosed mental disabilities started to hit me like a truck and almost killed me and that's when I also lost interest in doing art and only did it once in a while. Still at 28 I am not completely out of that mental health rabbit hole so I'm not sure when or if I ever will find my way back to those simpler times of just enjoying my life instead of being consumed by adult worries and such. And I also feel so tired all the time as an adult, I never did as a kid. I don't know if that's just in my head or if kids just have way more energy? I tell myself "I'm to tired to do art today, watching youtube is easier" and so I say "I will do art on weekend instead" and then I still feel just so burnt out from the week that I still can't bring myself to do it. Endless circle of depressive state and semi-burnt out.
Based on your comment, you seem to be leaning towards a pessimistic mindset and Ive been there too. One thing you can do that can help is make it your goal to point out 1 good thing that happened in your life everyday, that way you will be training your mind to see the positives in your life rather than the negatives.
Back in the day, or more like circa 2007(ish), there was this show on BET called "My Two Cents" that I would watch on schedule every single morning while I babysat my brother's German Shepherd. It's still one of the all-time gems for me, and a show that sadly has disappeared from all recorded memory (including even the internet somehow), but it was basically a morning talk show in which a rotating panel of guests would discuss issues affecting (largely) the black community. Despite being entirely Caucasian myself, I loved this show for how brilliantly it dealt with everyday issues -- and more germane to this conversation, how it often dealt with the impact of poverty or financial hardship on those simply trying to make it. One episode in particular, though, that really struck me and will stick with me forever was one in which they were discussing the cost (financially) that the average black woman in America pays on beauty supplies per week in order to look good. The deeper part of this conversation dealt with Eurocentrism and the affects of slanted beauty standards and marketing campaigns aimed at making Caucasian/European features appear most desirable and how it has historically left black women inheriting a very real financial, emotional and psychological burden, and even further beyond asking (from the panel) what could possibly be done to change the mentality of the average black woman to see themselves as inherently beautiful. ... But that part I only include to fully frame the brilliant, the powerful and the conscious-shifting perspective that would ultimately be shared by one of the panelists (Keith Boykin). Given how my own life's perspective has been, by default, fairly non-materialistic in itself (due in large part to the guilt I feel whenever I make a selfish purchase), the conversation leading up to this point had deeply resonated with me. It just made (and makes) sense that material things should only really be treasured for their intrinsic value in our lives. Deep down we should all want to limit our desires to those things which bring us, and especially those we love, true happiness. And typically, on that end, those things which do traditionally bring all living things true happiness are almost exclusively non-materialistic in nature; It's our relationships, our health, our security, and all the things which lead us to gratitude and peace. That said, and I swear I'm finally getting to my point, what Keith Boykin said that made me really re-shift (in many ways) my perspective was when he pivoted the conversation away from the shame -- specifically that which related to black women spending so much money to look "European" -- and instead implored us all to actually do as we say and not treat money so preciously. His argument, as simple as it seemed, was that our money will not go with us to the grave and that if it can be spent, in some relatively harmless (in the grand scheme) measure to make any black woman feel more at home in their own skin, more beautiful, more deserving of affection and basic human decency, then no matter how materialistic that spending may seem on the surface, it was (and is) money well spent. As it relates, in the bigger picture, to this conversation here -- the conversation about materialism in general -- I would just add that instead of going too far in the direction that we all assume some terrible guilt for having spent our money in a way which may seem materialistic to those looking from the outside in, that we take a moment to at least make sure it won't still bring us some much needed reprieve in a world that can be devastating, harsh and very confusing on the regular. One moment, that is, to just sit and ask ourselves whether or not today actually is the kind of day where some frivolous purchase (of an ultimately inconsequential amount) might lift us, or someone we love, out of the doldrums of life and offer some spontaneous and much-needed influx of happiness that need not be explained, justified or tirelessly guilted over. And FTR: I say all this (and apologies for the long-winded response) not to enable the person who is already so greedy or self-indulgent that they shamelessly surround themselves with material wealth in order to satiate the abomination within, but instead to simply (as this same thought did for me many years ago) lift some of the guilt associated with spending that might be just as toxic as materialism itself. This life is very mysterious, after all, and not all things a practical approach. Sometimes you do just need to let yourself love yourself by treating yourself so that you can feel enough like yourself to be yourself to those who also love to see yourself be yourself so that their days might also be brightened by a happier you. I know that probably sounds very corny, but I do think it's true. Not every depression goes away with the toss of a Zoloft. Not every sorrow or fear is forgotten with time. Every now and again you just need to make yourself happy and not feel bad about it, and if some materialism is what does it then so be it. Peace and gratitude are your priority... Be mindful not to throw away your happiness for nothing. IJS
It’s nothing wrong with wanting material things. It’s the over obsession with desires that ruins us. Once we know how to control our desires then wanting anything isn’t an issue.
Very true, just like food cravings and overeating. Once you can control it, your relationship with food switches and it becomes very easy to control your weight and set better health goals from there. It all starts with researched, tested and experienced knowledge. 👍
Trouble is many people can't control their desires as they think wanting more will make them happy but they are constantly hungry as nothing seems to fill them up. I have some material things but I truly value them and I don't buy often. It just doesn't make sense to constantly keep buying things as you'll never be satisfied and it just becomes a cluttered hoard.
Controlling one’s desire is incredibly difficult. Spirituality suggests a more sustainable path is to distance ourselves from our ego, which gets attached to our sense of identity. And an ego will always crave more so it can continue to build itself - this cannot be controlled. What can be controlled is knowing you are more than just your ego, and making a deep relationship with who you really are.
Love this type of content! Very educational. Wish more people can and realise this and not material stuff would only make you happy. Some of the happiness doesn’t come from material things in life.
I remember playing hopscotch in the streets. British bulldog. Riding bikes. Making tents from old sheets and jumping in and out of 2 skipping ropes. Sounds dreadful....? Best years of my life !
Ah, I remember the good old days growing up in Greater Manchester. We would step out and be out all day! We would go fishing, catch frogs and tadpoles, go on bike rides and get lost, play wembley, football, cricket, tag, hide and seek, build swings off trees, light fires (safe ones only, honest), build dens, play with conkers, marbles, cards, collect football stickers, wrestling atickers etc. We would only come home when we had to and by then it was tea time or even later! WE LOVED IT. The zombie generation has no clue about what fun we had 😃!!
I work on a project car. Lowrider. It’s my happy place. Yes it’s materialistic but at the same time it comes as a result in being successful with my hobby. I did catch myself showing off on Instagram and other platforms what I have like the ego side of things. And I realize none of it really matters. The compliments I get daily when I’m driving none of it means or matters or holds any value. I used to be homeless and nobody but a few cared about me when I was walking on the street. Now everybody has nice or bad things to say to me. So I quit showing off on social media, and just started working on my dream car in “silence” if you will. And I found out my true genuine happy place.
When I go to a concert, I go to see Elton John to watch him play the piano and play my favourite songs, not to film myself to make friends jealous. I keep my phone in my purse, or better yet, in my car hidden away. I want to immerse myself and experience the music live and in person. People on their phones shooting video of their lives, miss out on life.
I think sometimes its the extrinsic values and need for validation that pushes us to innovative and competitive. I know a lot of people who started working out in the gym just to be able to show off their physique on social media and eventually got into the long term habit of being fit even though they hated the routine.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong about showing your work from the gym, if you were over weight and want to share how far that person has come and show the world.I do see your point, but to me a person who works out for “likes” or “attention” are in it for the wrong reasons. For example, I take the gym very serious and I go cause it makes me feel good not because I want to impress people to me that comes with the time and work you out in the gym, but I do it for myself no one else
In my life I've had to learn to change the question from "what do I want" to "what to I want to do". For example, I want to ride my bike a lot. By getting a good quality 10 year old bike with some scratches for $300, I can spend more time actually riding than working to afford a $3000 bike like so many other people have around me. I don't want a status symbol I just want to ride
I was so frustrated with my children, when they were young. At the store it was always I want. So I gave them a simple allowance. They had to purchase the candy, the cards whatever they begged for. My daughter learned about byers remorse. My son is still working on it.
If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.
The first step to successful investing is figuring out your goals and risk tolerance either on your own or with the help of a financial professional but is very advisable you make use of a professional like I did. It's not how much money you save in the bank, but how much money you earn and how hard it works for you. Money devalue over time, investment is the best option as it grows over time
I think the key thing here is working with a professional. Yes people have devoted their lives to making profits in the market, but those of us who haven't but are interested in investing can simply work with them.

One thing I've learned is that real success comes from happiness. Love, laughter, family, friendship. Not from money. Not from having lots of stuff.
And sports.

I hate bucket lists I do not have one and never will and I do not care what people think of me.

As I posted them on my social media, I though, is anyone going to believe me that I went on a trip, because there are no pictures of me posted here. I had completely forgotten about myself as I was thoroughly enjoying myself in the environment I was in.
I am one of those people who love to travel and take pictures of the scenery. I’ll be in a picture here and there but most of the time it’s scenes I think are cool or beautiful and I wanted to share. What bothers me is when people take 10 pictures of their trip and they are in all 10 pictures. Im like dang I want to see the scenery because it will give me an idea if it’s a location I want to eventually check out.
You don't need people that don't matter to you to believe you. I don't have any social media because I don't need them to validate my existence. Live your life, not theirs.
@@tippytoe1250 same here. I’m hardly ever in my travel pics. I take a ton of pics and videos but may post 1 or 2 on SM. The rest are for my memories! Sadly there are ppl who travel just to take a ton a selfies but they don’t truly enjoy the destination or the experience
Why is it always rich people telling us that wealth is not important ?

Because they now know that they ain't happy with money no more
It's the exposure of these materialistic "things" that draw to our attention. Advertisements, T.V ads, magazines, phones, internet...the list goes on! Hard to avoid in this day and age.
Quite simple all you have to do is ignore it and not act upon them.
How about using an add blocker?? Thank you for the reminder.
I want to see this guy on again. This was a great podcast.
Excellent talk and makes 100% sense, if you don't understand this you're lost in this world or you're in complete denial! I've recently taken steps to delete all of the toxic social media apps and only I watch motivational/wholesome content going forward on TH-cam, I've cut out the amount of time I spend watching movies and gaming also. Find a hobby, go cycling, learn a skill, see friends and set rules with them especially if they cant put their fucking phones down and engage in conversation. I've been saying this shit for ages and people look at me like I'm the stupid one...
This is a great Music lesson. I can relate to playing in dives "just for the rent". It reminded me of the "intrinsic value" of just playing. Thanks.
Playing in dives?
Do you play music for a living or do you have a separate job?
Same here man.. Playing covers in dives can really drain that intrinsic spirit.. But it's always there waiting to flourish! :)

I love not being materialistic. It’s awesome. I see others with the disease and I actually see them suffering.

I think you can enjoy materialistic stuff as long as your working and being sensible about it
The problem is, so many people are not being sensible about it and accruing debt before they've even purchased a house for example
Of course you can enjoy materialistic stuff. I love my cars/motorbikes. But I/ME loves them. I couldn't give a shit what other people think, quite frankly I wish they didn't notice me at all so I'd be able to do more stuff I like to do.

To this conclusion myself over the last 5 years and I’m always trying to explain this to my friends…. The most important thing is time.
@@em0_tion Yeah everything is great when you just do it in moderation. Everything turns bad when you over indulge.
@@greenkitty82 yeah
Yep. Grab some toy soldiers and some dinosaurs, boom! That’s Jurassic Park roleplay right there, for hours. Or with miniature cars.
People on their phones shooting video of their lives, miss out on life.
Same here mate, I make a habit of leaving my phone in my car/hotel if I’m at gigs.

"The more you're driven by extrinsic values the more your intrinsic values are starved the more likely you're to become depressed and anxious."

If you get the facts about saving and investing and follow through with an intelligent plan, you should be able to gain financial security over the years and enjoy the benefits of managing your money.

I think the pandemic have really taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security.
Successful people don't become wealthy overnight. What most people see as a glance wealth, a great career and luxury is a result of smart work.
