- The Air Defense Command scrambled fighter jets to intercept a private plane that was flying over Washington, D.C. When those jets took off, they created a sonic boom that was heard in the area. After the fighter jet pilots intercepted the plane, they saw the pilot slumped over. That plane later crashed in Virginia, killing four people including wealthy realtor Adina Azarian. The Pentagon says the plane was not shot down and it likely crashed when it ran out of fuel.
The title makes no sense. The sonic booms of the fighter jets were not the cause of the crash.

This is why regular aircraft maintenance is extremely important. If there is a leak and the plane depressurizes, it can be a death trap.

This exact same situation happened to golfer Payne Stewart in 1999. Cessna, Gulfstream, and Learjet all swore that this was almost impossible to happen again. It's almost impossible for this to happen to a passenger jet, but the small private jets, this seems to happen far more often than they would like to admit.

Hypoxia was the first thing I suspected after hearing that the pilot was slumped over. Of course we'll never know the exact circumstances until an official investigation is completed.

First thing I thought of. There was also the commercial Helios Airways crash in Greece about 15 years ago- the best we can hope for is that everybody had slipped away and was dead before the final drop. RIP to the victims, it must be an awful time for the families involved.

There is more to this story. What altitude were they at? A one size answer without details to be checked leads to ....
34,000 feet. which is why if it depressurized they would of all passed out within a few seconds. A similar situation happened to Helios flight 522 in 2005. It caused the death of 121 people so it's worth checking out if you want to know more on this subject. This happens quite commonly.
Does anyone else get the sense that this was more than a mere accident? We've seen so many similar instances, haven't we? Celebrities, all over the world, involved in sudden plane crashes under mysterious circumstances, later swept under the rug.

While I was living in Holloman AFB, NM we used to hear sonic booms all the time, they freaked me out so bad before knowing what they were (I was a military wife and never heard one before my time there). Poor people, what a terrible way to go. Condolences to the family.

But why didn't it land where it was supposed to? Seems deliberate to reach your destination and then do a complete 180 back in the direction you came from.
yup do a 180 and then go above Washington, you just comply with the fighter jet, if they were out of fuel a refueling tanker can come there in seconds.
Gradual loss of cabin pressure = everyone suffers from hypoxia and passes out (eventually dying) = the plane continues on its own until it runs out of fuel. It's not common per se but also not uncommon. Same exact thing happened last September in the Baltics.
The 180 turn was probably the last thing programmed in the flight management system, as the pilot wouldn't have entered an approach. Even planes that can land on their own (of which this one is not) have to be told how to do it. It will continue lateral guidance until there is nothing else for it to follow and then it will just continue on the current heading.

A plane crashed in Virginia. Radar shows it flew to Long Island before turning back toward where it departed. Military jets were scrambled, they flew alongside the aircraft and saw no signs of life from the pilot or anybody else onboard. The crash was apparently quite catastrophic and the NTSB is investigating.

It’s likely because they had the home airport set as an alternate on the autopilot, perhaps left there after takeoff. It’s conceivable that the lack of pressurization occurred as the plane climbed to cruise altitude (radio and communication history will provide some insight here.)

Why does the media insist on presenting the plane crash along with the sonic boom as if one caused or had anything to do with the other? The interceptors exceeded the speed of sound to catch the plane - that's it. They didnt affect the plane at all.
I know they're not saying this, but the headlines sure could be interpreted that way.

Horrible situation for the family. This is apparently similar to the Payne Stewart private aircraft crash which happened many years ago, which also depressurized in flight.
So, with all the technology we have today, the PJ doesn't have the ability to monitor cabin pressure and automatically drop its altitude and get oxygen restored.?

I read someone commented that the pilot was "asleep" please don't spread that, he passed and was a victim like everyone else on board.
Notice how they only mentioned the names of the rich woman and her baby, not the other two poor people on board. Same thing that happened with kobe bryant and his kid. Poor people just dont matter as much.
There is no evidence the plane suffered "sudden loss of pressure." It's quite likely hypoxia crept up on the pilot and passengers. The pilot should have had a high-altitude indoctrination to be able to tell he was getting low on Oxygen. I'm surprised there wasn't a cabin pressure alarm.

Used to hear Sonic booms quite regular in the early 60s at McChord Air Force Base Washington State. Sad to hear about the loss of people. What altitude were they at when they turned around?

The last time this happened was in 2004 when a 737 had the same problem and went down after running out of fuel and a Learjet carrying Payne Stewart also got in a similar situation but the planes flew unmanned past their destination so how did the autopilot turn this plane around
Alot of lies Imbeded in this story. Why was the plane not equipped with oxygen masks? Why did they say it would take weeks to get to that area, and that there was no evidence to recover there because of fragmentation?
The autopilot would have flown the arrival procedure to its destination, after the completion of the pre programmed route the system reverts to flying straight and level. It’s more likely that the last programmed heading it was to fly just happened to be in the reverse direction and thus the plane continued to fly that heading until fuel starvation

Im close to Vandenberg AFB and have heard sonic booms my entire time here. Ive never heard of anyone, pilot or otherwise, veing effected by sonic boom.

Yep, grew up in the 60’s with Ellsworth Air Force base a hundred miles away so sonic booms were a frequent occurrence. Still, we may never know what caused the failure that led to hypoxia that killed everyone? 😢
Yep, I live kinda near there too, and they like to use Santa Margarita to fly over and these were constant flyovers, booms etc but nothing bad ever happened. It was disrupting, but that’s all it was.
Yeah, similarly, I live in what used to be the flight path of space shuttles and during re-entry they would cause really loud sonic booms, but I ain’t never heard of it causing any harm to anybody.

The jets passed over restrictive airspace, the balloon did not. Anything which goes through restrictive airspace without warning or response immediately gets a couple of jets.

You would think the perusing jets would have the exact location of where the jet went down. Also if you went high enough to depressurize then wouldn’t the plane fail to level out as it dropped in altitude?

This is exactly what happened on 911, except the military jets never got over 477 miles per hour. No sonic boom. You can’t fly over DC without a “friendly” transponder.

How exactly do they gather that there was a sudden drop in pressure in the cabin? Is that info collected on the instruments and detected by air traffic control in real time? Most likely collected by the black box but that woul take time to find and download.
I believe I was right near there when it happened. I felt it. I live in Northern Virginia right near WDC and was outdoors with my family. My younger brother was playing baseball with his team when all of a sudden I felt and heard something that sounded like a thunderstorm or some crazy explosion. But it was bright and sunny so it couldn't be that. Everyone was like "What was that?" And this is the only conclusion I can get to all of this. Crazy how it happened right NEAR me and I felt it.
