Was in the marching band for this game (Drumline). I have been to every big game since, including the Sugar Bowl v. Auburn, but this was the most exciting moment in SU football for me. Hysterical how big the shoulder pads were during these years.

Some Syracuse notables: All American and former Falcon Tim Green (72), who's unfortunately battling Lou Gehrig Disease. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone (78), and back up QB, '87 Heisman runner up Don McPherson (9). And WR/former Dolphin Scott Schwedes (16).

Don't forget the late Markus Paul, who played safety for both the Bears & the Bucs.

For Syracuse this win was so unexpected after a 60-7 beat down by Nebraska the year before and a shutout loss to Rutgers in the Dome the week before this game.

That blowout loss was marked by Nebraska doing an unexpected onside kick up by 30+ points. SU fittingly got revenge in this gane. Screw Nebraska.

I echo that sentiment, even from a 40-year Husker fan.

JC Penny at Shopping town had a large screen tv in front of the store with the game on. I remembered that a security guard told a sales girl in Dey Brothers that Syracuse was leading with 2 minutes left. This was sweet.

I saw in the official Syracuse film of this game that there was a USA Sports banner as well as a Katz Sports banner in the south end zone. Makes me wonder if the USA Network telecast version of this game even exists....

A year before , Nebraska jumped out to a 21-0 lead in Lincoln. Then , Tom Osborne called for an onside kick...classless...he paid the price in this game.

Well, to be fair, he was chasing style point towards a national title at the time. Still, that's no excuse, I agree with you about that.

I remember this game as a young 12 year old in western Nebraska. I was expecting a big Husker victory, and when it was only 7-3 at halftime I told this elderly lady who owned a small shop what the score was and she said: "Well, Nebraska's gonna lose today." Yep they did! Obviously Nebraska wasn't the same team offensively as they were in '83 (no where near), but the defense was much better in '84.

My dad and I had tickets to this game, but decided to not go because of previous year's thumping by Nebraska and the previous week's shutout loss to Rutgers (it was my dad's decision). Instead, he forced me to go with him to a St. Lawrence University (D-III) football game (his alma mater) all the way up in St. Lawrence where we froze and were listening to the SU v Nebraska game on the radio.
Nobody ever said my dad was a master prognosticator.

Where is St Lawrence University and why was it freezing cold in early September?

We were 28 point underdogs, per Curt Gowdy after our final touchdown.

With Nebraska coming off a 42-3 rout at UCLA and Syr a 0-19 loss to rutgers and with Neb winning the previous year 63-7, I'm surprised Neb wasnt favored by 48 points, not 28. Maybe the biggest upset in college football history.

Nebraska fan here. Team came in so overconfident in this game and didn't know what to do when Syracuse hit back. I think the Husker team really thought Syracuse would just lay down. Great and well deserved win.

maybe. but later this same year maryland is gonna come back on defending national champion miami- from 31 points down...

    • @rawn4203
      @rawn4203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@akumawani True but Miami in 1984 stumbled badly after beating preseason #1 Auburn in the kickoff classic, including a 3-38 home loss to FSU and of course the choke against BC also at the Orange Bowl.

They beat a Top 10 Oklahoma State at home a week later. Sundberg was a drop off from Gill.

Biggest Upset in College Football History? At least in the latter half of the 20th century. Biggest win for SU football since their 1959 National Championship game. In my opinion, only the 1987 win against Penn State was as meaningful.

Tom Osborne is one of the best coaches ever but why the hell did he punt on 4th down down by 10 with a minute left?

    • @MrPhilaCuse

Then he starts calling time outs. What a dolt.

I remember him talking about it on the Tom Osborne show, he said the hope was that they would fumble the punt.

I wonder if Nebraska got caught looking ahead? Remember, they had a big win against a Top 10 UCLA team the week before. The following week, they beat another Top 10 team in Oklahoma State?

Crazy to see Tom Osborne punt trailing 17-7 on 4th and long with 1 minute remaining....why wouldn’t you go for it? Syracuse would just take a knee regardless. Dumb.

I’m a UCLA fan and I remember this husker team destroying UCLA with so much power. Then the next week seeing this score come up and saying what the ???? Nebraska always beats it’s self when it gets too big headed.
