I am a born and raised in Montana guy. This brought back memories of camping with my Dad in a hunting cabin… no power… in the middle of winter…. when I was a kid. Cabin is in Big Timber, MT and surrounded by wilderness. An oil lamp and a big old cast iron “Garland”, wood burning cook stove were the amenities. The sound of the snow squeaking…. and the sound of the wood being split…. brought it all back. I think that when it gets that cold outside… the air almost smells different…. Anybody else find that to be true? At -30 F and colder…. on a windless night…. the still quietness is truly amazing…. only if you have a toasty, roaring fire. 😊 Thanks for the video 👍✨

Jay this tent setup is my favorite of all then the RBM tent then the cabin. Even though we got the out house 99% finished. I still love this the best. To me the cabin is like living in town without all the neighbors. That is the good thing no one around except one guy down the lake. But these tents are really roughing it for sure. Love you and all you do for us.
Don’t think ppl realise how cold that is. Always amazes me that German soldiers were fighting in Russia in minus 40 and only had summer uniforms. It must of been hell.
Jay, I just love how wholesome and nice your channel is. Watched you with Jerry and those Labrodorians and overnight with Isla yesterday. Your love for these people was just jumping through the screen. And i love all of you right back from the burning up USA❤❤❤ ps i hang w/you to the end every time or i come back later. Your nature shots are gorgeous!
When you were talking about the ground being freezing temps while the upper air was 80s and 90s, I started thinking it would be cool to have a thermal imaging camera, to capture that extreme difference! I'd love to see something like that! Maybe a shot from outside the tent as well, when it's really cold, and the tent is hot!
“This is what cold sounds like.” I’m sitting in a 70 degree living room with a blanket on me and I got chills when you began walking through the snow. I associate that sound with painful cold!
I was in Korea in January/February of 1973. Serving In the Marines. We were on a cold winter exercise. Our camp was on top of the highest point possible. Our radios work line of sight so had to above all the other units. Our second night there it got cold very cold -40 with 40 mph wind making fell like -81. We were in insulated 12 man tents we had two kerosine heaters. We stayed warm enough. Then 3 days it got up to 70 + degrees. We were on that mountain for 45 days eating C rations.
Jay, I appreciate you doing what I am not going to do! It is just great to see you having such a good time out in the cold, eating well and getting a good night's sleep! Please stay safe and keep having a wonderful time!!
I love the internal framing. I once owned military surplus modular tenting, which we floored when we lived in it for six months from spring to end of September. The walls would have been a great addition. Lighter canvas is also better, although the windows did provide some light but not enough for through the winter.
This is my very first video I watched of yours. And I was very satisfied with the production of it. I would definitely be watching more of your videos as long as you make them
Just as you like doing the camping in those extreme cold temperatures, I really love watching the videos where you do that. The way you get set up, your sleep system, the stove, what you cook for dinner. Thanks so much.
I'm not sure if it's because I live in the south US where we don't get any snow, but I find these camping videos in extreme cold so comforting to watch and I'll put them on during the workday almost like a yule log. Thanks for sharing your journey because people like me who don't witness this weather are fascinated at what it takes to survive in the extreme cold.
Jay, I appreciate you doing what I am not going to do! 😁 It is just great to see you having such a good time out in the cold, eating well and getting a good night's sleep! Please stay safe and keep having a wonderful time!! 🥰
I live in northern Maine and love watching your videos, it's just like living here, snowy and very cold. When I do an overnight burn I like to use full round pieces for that nice long slow burn and gives off good heat. Keep up the great videos and look forward to the next.
I've experienced similar life threateningly cold conditions myself. One time I was in my warm bed in Ireland when at around 2 am I woke up to find half of the blanket not covering my legs. I was quick to rectify the situation but it was a close call nonetheless and happy to say I survived it.
I love your videos. I always watch right to the end, Jay. I love your enthusiasm for what you do, the opportunity you give us to experience something that might otherwise forever be unattainable (even if it is vicariously), the beautiful nature, and how it all seems to lower my stress and anxiety whenever I watch. Keep doing what you're doing! Thank you!
I love that I can enjoy the extreme cold and NOT have to actually be in it! 😊Thanks for that! I would've fried the cold sandwich in butter just for extra flavor. Maybe next time. Happy new year all!
Out of all the cold camping shows, I love urs the best plus the type of food u cook is right up my alley as well. No weird food lol😅, just good all around healthy soul food
Hey Jay! How about a video of your entire journey from preparing all your supplies right through the ride out to the tent! Then your trip back home and your unpacking! Would be interesting to see your process from start to finish! Good stuff! Keep up the hard work! I always watch until the very end BTW …..
Sorry to be naïve, but is that his log cabin or is it anyones to use ? Does he own that land ? I’m from the UK and I’m sure if that was in the middle of nowhere in the uk it would get vandalised ect. Sorry for the questions CB. Paul.
My dad used to make us kids go look at the thermometer when it was -40. He actually gave us a ride to school when it got that cold. I grew up in Northern Wisconsin.
Jay, stop sending the cold temps south of the lake. It's getting so cold here that we have to take the fence post inside at night. Stay safe, and enjoy your adventures.
When I was working as a diamond driller up in Northern Ontario I lived in a tent similar to yours with 3 other guys. I worked 2 winters in freezing temperatures from November through to late March. From mid December through until the end of February the average day time temperature was around -25 degrees Celsius and night time temperatures were _40 to -45 degrees Celsius. We had lots of canned goods to go along with packages of frozen meats. Each of us took turns making meals and at the drill site we had a 45 gallon drum as our wood stove but had a stove similar to yours in the tent. At the drill site my average meal consisted of canned soup and canned meat with a couple of slices of bread. My favorite canned meat was spam and a can of beans and canned potatoes. I would fry up the potatoes add the beans and the can of spam. It was my favorite meal while at work. To change things up sometimes I would have salmon it came in cans like our soup cans so it made for a nice meal with canned potatoes that again I would fry up on that 45 gallon drum wood stove. I am retired now and I still enjoy my can of spam mixed with beans, canned potatoes but now I also add two eggs that I will make for breakfast now. It's actually quite good. After all spam is made of a piece of pork shoulder put raw into the can and is boiled in hot water until cooked and the result is what you get when open the can
Danny it was in 1974. I was making about $6/hr which was more than the $2.50/hr I made in the factory. The thing is when you are isolated from any towns or cities you can't spend any money so I came out of there with lots of money in the bank. I worked 12 hour shifts, seven days a week. So lots of overtime pay.
I LOVE watching these videos in the FREEZING cold ❄️🥶 with the snow. It's SO BEAUTIFUL. I live in Louisiana. Every few years it'll get down to 10° or so.. But we are NOT set up for long term Temps like this. I think I would love to live off the GRID like that where there's cold winters and mild summers. Because, let me tell ya, it gets really hot here in the south during summer.
First time watcher and I enjoyed this very much! I live in Northern Ontario and am very accustomed to this snap, crackle, pop type deep freeze that oddly makes everything extra beautiful and accurately described as 'breath taking' which is what this type of cold weather does to you. What ever you do, do not eat a peppermint, cough drop, hot gum or smoke because you will be in a world of hurt from coughing your guts out lol. It's also such 'breath taker' to see the Northern Lights here as well and the colder the temperature, the clearer they are. So blessed to live up here 💚
Thanks Jay! Great videography. Very nice drone shots. The moon over the lake was beautiful. I can tell you were very excited about being at the tent. Please include more video of the ride through the forest on the snowmobile. Have you considered putting a tarp over the snowmobile while it's parked at the tent? Maybe it would start easier? Best Regards
The moments you feel most alive, are those when you are closest to danger or death. Those are the moments most remembered! Winter camping is extremely underated, love the setup you have.
@@LisaValentine1 most animals are not going to bother you if they have a ready food supply, but I understand your concern. If you're well prepared you'll be ok.
The nature and exercise is great. The way you heat up your tents is really good. The healthy meals you can cook in that situation is wonderful. The wifi for that Raprtors game sounded so good. So much fun.
Great watch, thanks for the hard work to bring us along.. as a Canadian on the east coast I appreciate your love and respect for being in the wild when it’s brutally cold. Very best 🍻
So, I live in South Carolina presently. Originally from Connecticut. When you started the video and were walking that particular sound the snow makes in absolute frigidness is very unique and I even thought it. I remember -40 F and windchill was -85. It was a record do not recall the year. But then you commented later in the video about the sound of COLD, it was cool that you made that point. I miss the cold weather it's been infernally hot here this year. Thanks for the video it went by so fast, you are definitely prepared!!
As someone from the north of New Zealand where winter doesn't really exist, i would LOVE to experience something like this. Summer is nice and all, but i want to experience REAL cold.
Real cold is fine in small doses. I live in the Upper Midwest in the U.S. and we've had plenty of winters where the wind chill hits -45F, or about -43C and after about 5 minutes of 35+ mph winds blasting your face and exposed hands you begin to experience excruciating pain in those exposed areas.
@@davewilliams5721 Well, i wouldn't be truely experiencing the cold if i didnt expect SOME issues like that. I would obviously be well prepared, and ready if i was going to commit to experiencing temperatures like that.
I love that. Camping in freezing conditions in the middle of nowhere and away from the troubles of the world…and you can still bust out a Toronto Raptors game. The wonders of technology. Absolutely brilliant.
-30 is the coldest I've ever been in, while working the flightline almost 20 years ago on a trip to Eielson AFB, AK. It was a fun trip, but it was definitely chilly. Made me appreciate having a warm room to go to with a hot shower after my shifts.

But do wonder..in Oz we add water to our canned soups do you not need to do that with yours..eg are they meant to be eaten the way you did? Keep the great content coming and I hope scammers dont ruin things for you.
Canadian here, to your soup question. Most of our soups we add water or m ilk for the creamed soups. I myself will go half milk half water to the creamed soups but we also have soup that you don't need to add anything its already done. Just dump in the pot heat and serve presto! Lol 🇨🇦🇨🇦

It's always colder in our cabin than it is outside when we first get there. We're in the UP of Michigan and we swim through 3 plus feet of snow to get to it from the road. But once in and unpacked, it's heaven.
Being from Alberta, I can completely understand how CAMPING IN THE EXTREME COLD can be such an amazing experience...as a teenager I took a job "Pinecone Picking" in a town called Grande Cache Alberta, it was approx 40km down a logging road, and the month was January. Myself,Cousin, and Two other Buddies got dropped off with our gear, then to be picked up in exactly 10 days. The temperature ranged around minus 30. On the fourth day, the temp dipped below --40 "Extremely Cold" we had brought some alcohol ""ONLY"" to be drank on the last night as a cellebration of our making it to the finish...Well, -40 had a way of convinceing us "ALL" that THIS COULD BE OUR LAST NIGHT. 4 teenagers, between the ages of 17-18,Freezing,Drunk,made some REALLY bad choices, The first one Being "Alcohol" the second Being PUTTING THE COLEMAN STOVE IN A 4 MAN TENT TO KEEP WARM, The third Being BURNING DOWN OUR TENT. With still 6 days to go before any help comes ""NO CELLPHONES BACK THEN"" An old UNUSED logging road, The TRUE meaning of ""EXTREME SURVIVAL"" Truely began......
Loved the entire video Jay! It was great to feel all the atmosphere you brought to it. Thanks for putting all the effort in. Would love to have a similiar cold shelter experience. Happy New year from Dublin, Ireland ! Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh!

In regards to the tent being cold at the floor, you could maybe fit up a funnel system made of metal to the stove and allow it to conduct the heat into its air and then you can essentially setup a radiator system where a big pipe takes air from the ground and it pushes it up and then it circulates back to the ground again.

It's not that bad
They deserved hell
@@SeriousSam2you been brainwashed by jews?
have seen photos of German soldiers frozen to death as they stood.
@@SeriousSam2damn right
I’m from Texas. God knew where to put me on this earth because he knew I couldn’t handle that kind of cold. Great video! Keep them coming! Jay
I could not take the heat you folks get down there. I would melt.
This is a cool idea
“This is what cold sounds like.” I’m sitting in a 70 degree living room with a blanket on me and I got chills when you began walking through the snow. I associate that sound with painful cold!
70 and a blanket?!
It only hurts if you let it. Or if you're unprepared.
I would definitely be watching more of your videos as long as you make them
AGREED !!!
Hey Jay, awesome video! I did make it all the way to the end. The snow scene at the end was AMAZING!
Jay, I appreciate you doing what I am not going to do! 😁 It is just great to see you having such a good time out in the cold, eating well and getting a good night's sleep! Please stay safe and keep having a wonderful time!! 🥰
This is the kind of winter camping we have been waiting for!
Bitter cold and cozy at the same time, does that make sense?
Thank you Jay!
That sound of snow, when walking around at those Temps is just so recognizable.
😂
That was a very close call 😂
I am glad you live to tell this story so we can always be on the watch, never to experience such misery.
😂😂😂
Thank you loved it first time I seen your vid I just love the excitement of camping out and keeping warm
I'm 70 years old next year,I think you are awsome, so brave to be you must be great I admire you save traveling my freind God bless you amen
Thank you!
yes i always look forward to mondays
Hope your anxiety gets better 🤘
I have been binge watching various cold camping videos, and I would NEVER do it, but kuddos to you for enjoying it!😂❤🎉
I love the winter videos, and the drone shots are outstanding! Thanks for making the effort. We really enjoy it.
Canadians are just built different. Much respect… it’s 45*F here and I’m afraid I’m gonna lose toes to frostbite when I go to work lol
Yes we our 👍🇨🇦
You can't get frostbite at 45°F. The air has to be below freezing for that to happen (
@@lasttime500 it’s called sarcasm
Another great episode … thank you! Wichita, Kansas here! Can’t wait for the winter here!
I love that I can enjoy the extreme cold and NOT have to actually be in it! 😊Thanks for that! I would've fried the cold sandwich in butter just for extra flavor. Maybe next time. Happy new year all!
Oh fuck yeah
Of course we watch to the end! How else can one live vicariously through you? 🤣 Happy New Year!
Love the how he shows and tells us what is working and what is not working.
Jay, stop sending the cold temps south of the lake. It's getting so cold here that we have to take the fence post inside at night.
Stay safe, and enjoy your adventures.
haha. I'll be sending them all winter.
After all spam is made of a piece of pork shoulder put raw into the can and is boiled in hot water until cooked and the result is what you get when open the can
How much were you earning? Was it worth it?
Danny it was in 1974. I was making about $6/hr which was more than the $2.50/hr I made in the factory. The thing is when you are isolated from any towns or cities you can't spend any money so I came out of there with lots of money in the bank. I worked 12 hour shifts, seven days a week. So lots of overtime pay.
@@claudebelanger8524 That's equivalent to about $35 an hour now. Or nearly $3000 for an 84 hour 7 day week. Good money but a lot of work.
Your videos our awesome thank you for a wonderful time spending it with you and watching you cook.
Out of curiosity, would it be more beneficial to leave the snow on the roof to help insulate or would it just cause an issue once the tent warmed up?
I LOVE watching these videos in the FREEZING cold ❄️🥶 with the snow. It's SO BEAUTIFUL.
I live in Louisiana. Every few years it'll get down to 10° or so.. But we are NOT set up for long term Temps like this. I think I would love to live off the GRID like that where there's cold winters and mild summers.
Because, let me tell ya, it gets really hot here in the south during summer.
❤❄✨✨🎅
It’s great looking back. You’re one of the best on TH-cam!
So blessed to live up here 💚
I love your free stress videos, it calm my anxiety, thank you.
You mean stress free? Free stress would be quite a bit different, lol
I watch a lot of these cold weather camping videos. I like that you actually talk in yours
I’d be so afraid of a wild animal sniffing out my dinner and attempting to get it.
@@LisaValentine1 most animals are not going to bother you if they have a ready food supply, but I understand your concern. If you're well prepared you'll be ok.
Very true!
The nature and exercise is great. The way you heat up your tents is really good. The healthy meals you can cook in that situation is wonderful. The wifi for that Raprtors game sounded so good. So much fun.
Do you want to be with him at night
Great watch, thanks for the hard work to bring us along.. as a Canadian on the east coast I appreciate your love and respect for being in the wild when it’s brutally cold. Very best 🍻
Wish more guys were as appreciative of weather like you are. Way to go!
I can tell you from personal experience, the Novelty of extreme cold wears off Quickly.
@@blainclatworthy5423 im sure it does. But thats not going to stop me.
I live in Fairbanks. I’ve seen -62F here back in the 80’s. There have been days where -45F was the high. I do love the cold.
Greetings from Western Australia Jay. Yes I stayed until the end...who in their right mind wouldnt? Loved your video and am now a new subscriber. I love all things cold and snowy and cant wait to see some more of your vids. Im a 70 yr old and live my adventures through other peoples lives...used to live in Tasmania (Aust) and we got down to minus 8 on a cold night but nothing like what you share, so thank you so much for the enjoyment. I love corned beef sandwiches or corn beef and fried veg - bit of pickle on the side Tuna or salmon sandwiches are great too.
Lol 🇨🇦🇨🇦
That tent is a great setup, I'd go every weekend no matter how cold with a setup like that. Love these videos, thank you
You living out my dream. I’ve been dreaming about doing something like this for a decade. Not ready for a solo trip yet and don’t have anyone willing to join me on the experience.
Hope you ll do it
thats insane how much snow there is there ... wow... my health is so fragile all i can do is dream of places like this , thank you for hosting this vid
May God bless you with good health
Tin tuna sandwich with onion is DELICIOUS 😋🧅🐟
I watch your videos to the end... LOVIN THE SNOW ❄
First time viewer and this was so refreshing! Watching how much you love the cold and nature in general is a wonderful thing.
It's always colder in our cabin than it is outside when we first get there. We're in the UP of Michigan and we swim through 3 plus feet of snow to get to it from the road. But once in and unpacked, it's heaven.
Tuna. Hands down.
Great video. Not a fan of talking but you are the exception. 👏👏👏👏
I too love snow and the cold.
Wow that's a lot of "QUOTES"
Good story! Y’all lived through it and it made you stronger. 😂
WOW. Glad you survived it! That would have been a terrible thing.
How did you survive ?
The best thing about the video is the man is such a nice guy....
Canadians can tell the temp by the sound the snow makes under their boots
Also the moustache has thick icicles on it. Where’s the icicles?
Agree!
Hell yea
Loved the entire video Jay! It was great to feel all the atmosphere you brought to it. Thanks for putting all the effort in. Would love to have a similiar cold shelter experience. Happy New year from Dublin, Ireland !
Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh!
I had to google Happy new year in Irish. Gártha! is cheers? I thought it was silante?
I grew up in northern Canada where Halloween was -38 C. In my 20’s I bought a team of 5 sled dogs and did years of winter camping with my team. Coldest was -48 C, without the wind. I still love the cold at 69. Thx for great video.
It's hard to believe that you can get so much warmth inside a minimally insulated canvas cabin when it's so cold outside
A lot of it has to do with wind chill, you cut the wind, and warm sticks around
In regards to the tent being cold at the floor, you could maybe fit up a funnel system made of metal to the stove and allow it to conduct the heat into its air and then you can essentially setup a radiator system where a big pipe takes air from the ground and it pushes it up and then it circulates back to the ground again.
