Omg. Talk about missing the obvious. I’m 40 now, live in Canada, but I was a high performance swimmer starting at age 5. I was a Jr. Lifeguard during the summers in Venice/Samo growing up as a kid in Los Angeles. And I kid you not, it didn’t Dawn on me that the Annie, are you okay line was about our dummy we practiced on. Lol. We literally were trained to rush up and say, “Hey, hey are you okay?” to the Annie doll to practice on the beach. I have so many memories of this song coming out and have my own stories about being linked to Michael Jackson in my 20s... but never had realized about Annie. The more you know! 😅❤ Thanks for this, friend!
There's a British glam rock band that went through a similar thing, Doctor & The Medics. They made a cover of Spirit in the Sky and disappeared right after
Always loved these guys. I listened to ANThology a lot as a preteen. They recently played in my small town in New Jersey and I met Mike Cosgrove the drummer and made sure to tell him how much his drumming influenced me to start playing when I was 10 because not only is his drumming good, but his drumset always sound amazing. Mike wished me good luck on my ventures. Super nice guy!
I was on those buses!!! I was a huge fan of AAF and saw them 20+ times at UCR. I would see the guys around town, once i was wearing a AAF t-shirt that I made myself and ran into the drummers younger sister and Grandma at the local mall. The grandma let me know that her Grandson was in that band. EDIT: I saw them play Sade song.
They did something a lot of bands don't pull off as a cover: they made it their own and absolutely nailed it. I remember being underwhelmed by their original music, but the cover was outstanding (for the record, their style is generally outside my tastes, so take my opinion with the correct grains of salt)
It sucks that modern artists are criticised for covers. People forget that so few bands/singers even wrote their own songs in the 50's even into the 80's
Part of it though was back in the 50s and 60s labels often wouldn’t let their artist perform their own material, they hired songwriters and performers separately becuase it allowed then ti actually ( because of contracts) to make more in royalties. You had to get pretty big, be influential, or get with the right record label to write and perform your own songs.
@@bpark222 Cindy Lauper would be a good example of that as far forward as the 80's. The label didn't let her write her own music until she got the opportunity to collaborate on Time After Time when they wanted one more song for the album.
I'm assuming Michael Jackson liked the cover. And AAF fell into the same trap The Ataris did with Boys of Summer; best known song being a pop punk cover of a hit song
My favorite memory of AAF was singing Movies in the crowd, and Dryden came out to the crowd and shared the mic with me to sing. Movies was my jam among several others. Also, my band opened the show. He had no idea what it meant to me but it was pretty awesome lol
As much as I enjoy a good chunk of their music, I have unfortunately heard from 2 separate friends of mine in different bands that when they did shows with AAF...they were arrogant dbags IRL. So...might be pretty deserved that they tanked. This time frame would have been mid 2000s.
We all need to remember that AAF did this song when Michael Jackson was considered a late-night TV joke. Michael Jackson's music was well known, but it was overshadowed by all of his personal problems. It took a lot of guts for them to do a MJ cover at the time.
Big fan from Iran, I love rock n roll stories I mean backstage stories, not just dirt stuff, useless knowledge but I like to know about them, dunno why? 70’s and 80’s were best decades of human being history, the music was soooo good, so thank you you telling the stories behind some bands actions, decisions and leading to changes. Anyway, I’m a big VanHalen fan, have 2 subject for you to cover if you interested: 1- Cabo Wabbo cantina opening day and changes it impacts on the band (Sammy and the brothers fall out) 2- first 5 seconds of Hot for Teacher, is it drums or a car exhaust sound? As Ted Templeman said in his book that Greg Renoff wrote it’s a car exhaust and no one from the VanHalen camp denied it, BUT majority in internet saying it’s simmons drums, it’s a mystery for me, what do you think? I hope Alex say something in his upcoming book 🤞🏻 cheers
Well even reading this headline makes me respect the band more and even at the time I thought well this is cool at least I get to hear a song that rocks because I was at that point where I was like this was right before Clear Channel bought everything or maybe right after but I wasn't crazy about the song but I was glad that they were still playing rock on the radio instead of marry me baby I don't exist your Cleopatra and I'm a white knight with a cyst that I got from you baby love me blue. It’s funny because the other day I was eating on a restaurant and they had MTV on the screens and they and played Smooth Criminal … I was only there for 30 minutes I Can’t believe what a coincidence it was 😂😂😂

Smooth Criminal isn't shit compared to alot of the other cuts on that album. Attitude, Death Day and especially the album closer Universe are just amazing! And their new album, mANTras, hearkens back to ANThology as well. Just a great band !
